Gay Marriage Should Be Legal

A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)

Gay marriage has slowly become a significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. On June 26, 2015, it was ruled out by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay marriage was now legal. The first thing that I thought was that “Wasn’t it already legal in the United States?” Well, apparently no it has not been legalized in the United States! (Dumb me.) The U.S. is known to be a nation of equality and gives everyone the freedom of the speech, but it is actually a nation full of racism, sexism, and homophobias. Our country gives us the freedom to do many things, but to gay couples they don’t have much freedom as others do. We are violating their freedom because we aren’t letting them marry the one they love, so to say that everyone in the U.S. has the freedom to do anything is wrong. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which many homosexual people are not allowed to chase, but thanks to the new ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court homosexual people are allowed to chase it. They are being looked down at and are feeling ashamed of themselves because of all the cruelty that they are receiving. Homosexual people haven’t been able to fully express themselves until it was legalized for them to fully do so. They have been fighting for the right to be married to their same sex for about a decade now, and they have finally met their goal. #Lovewins.

While some states have began to embrace the civil rights of all American people and allowing both hetero- and homo-sexual couples to marry, some states have done quite the opposite and banned same sex marriages and unions. Not all Americans feel so strongly about legalizing same sex marriage. Those against same sex marriage believe marriage has been defined as being between a man and a woman. However, that has not always been true, as explained in the beginning of this paper, the ancient people commonly wed the same gender and them and also had same sex sexual relations (ProCon.org). In fact in the first century Nero the Emperor of Rome married at least two of his lovers who were men (Chastain 19.) It was not until Christianity became a wide spread religion that sodomy and homosexuality became immoral. Those who oppose the legalization of gay marriage also believe that same sex marriage will threaten the institution of marriage. Marriages since 2011 have been at a new low, with only 52 percent of adults being married (Yen). However gays are fighting for the right to marry who they love, while heterosexual couples take that for granted. Divorce rates are currently lingering around 40-50% that is without gays being able to be married in many states. Gay marriage is one of the most controversial issues in this modern world. In my opinion I do not consider “gay marriage” marriage, because marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman by its nature. When two men or two women “marry” it denies the reputation of keeping the human race and the raising of children. Gay marriage also violates the natural law, and we should follow “avoid evil and do good”, the natural law is for every human being in the world and we should follow it by marrying the opposite sex. Some people have unnecessary opinions on other people. One of the strongest arguments that happened recently is gay marriage. Although in America it has been legalized in all fifty states and some of the battle is done, it doesn’t stop all the problems. People who are gay in states that had formerly banned gay marriage are in danger. There are those who so strongly object to same sex marriage that they could take action by harming those who benefit. Then there is the whole “people can choose to be gay”, and religion aspect to it.

The concept of gay or same sex marriage is controversial. There are a number of countries where homosexual couples are allowed to marry with their relationship gaining the same recognition as heterosexual couples; countries who allow gay marriage include Sweden, Spain, Canada, Iceland and Argentina. In the US nine states, plus Washington DC provide for gay marriages (FTM, 2012). It would appear that there is a gradual movement towards acceptance of gay marriage, but with only a minatory of people living in areas where gay marriage is accepted there is still a great deal of resistance, with a restatement of arguments against gay marriage, but when examining those arguments many are flawed and reflect fears rather than fact.

In recent years, there has been an extraordinary amount of discussion on whether same sex relationships and marriage is ‘wrong’. Many people around the world have an opinion on this subject, with some forming strong judgments against those who disagree with them. As this is a heavily discussed topic, few have no preference to legalisation or not. Dr Martin Luther King Jr said “marriage is a basic human right. You cannot tell people they cannot fall in love,” although he said this referring to mixed race marriage, the same can also be said for those of same-sex. Who are we to allow some couples to get married and tell others they cannot. Everyone deserves equal opportunities in life. Therefore homosexuality should be globally accepted.

Since the very beginning there has been discrimination, corruption, and over all rebellion. People have always fought for their beliefs, one way or another. A widely-spread argument now is the question if gay marriage should become legal. This question has been becoming more public throughout the years. People have had conflicting thoughts about this topic whether gays should be allowed to marry or not. On June 26th, 2015, gay marriage was ruled to have rights that would be protected by the US Constitution commitments of liberty and equality. Since then, gay marriage was legalized in all states, however, is still and controversial issue because people believe that same-sex couples should not have the same rights as opposite-sex couples.

There is presently much controversy regarding homosexuals and whether or not it would be wrong for society to accept marriages between same-sex couples. The masses express confusion regarding the homosexual community and individuals are generally inclined to discriminate homosexuals. While some consider that marriage is not actually an important thing and it is irrelevant whether or not a gay couple unites through official means, recent events show otherwise and it is apparently very important for a homosexual couple to have access to the institution of marriage in order for both of its members to be provided with a series of rights that are normally beneficial in the case of heterosexual couples.

Currently, the Webster’s New World Dictionary defines the word married as being husband and wife, yet there are millions of gay activists who are fighting for a new meaning. They believe marriage is more than a piece of paper and a set of rings. The hope is that marriage could be defined as a “public recognition of a private commitment” or “emotional, financial, and psychological bond” between two people (Sullivan 53). Gay activists believe that taking away the ability to have a publicly recognized relationship or an accepted union is an infringement of their public equality. Contemporary moral disputes are constantly ongoing around the world and in the United States. For hundreds of years marriage has been defined as the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman as partners in a relationship. Up until relatively recently the debate on gay marriage has not been a popular topic. Gay marriage has been illegal in the US and most countries around the world up until the early 2000s.[1] The debate on gay marriage has grown with more and more people publicly speaking and giving their opinions on it, especially in the Unites States.

“We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.” In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall Riots, had non-straight, non-cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon.

The Supreme Court’s decision to rule in favor of gay marriage was eye opening to me and made me dig deep for an honest opinion. While I do not necessarily agree with gay couples or gay marriage, I came to a fair conclusion. I am surprised it took this long to finally get this law passed since gay couples are no different from straight couples, and no one should be denied the right to marry. The backlash to this was very astonishing and disgusting. All these couples want to do is love each other and live a normal life just as a straight couple would.

Same sex marriage has been a huge topic for many years. Some states have ruled it unconstitutional, and some have disagreed, and even passed a law to allow same sex couple to legally get married. Should we punish people for wanting to show and express their love for one another? Me personally, I feel that these people should be allowed to show their love for one another the same as a man marring a woman. The only difference in their love is sexual preference and I don’t think that should be a huge deal.
