Americans want freedom and equality, that is the main desire of just about every citizen. Most of society will say they support equal rights for all citizens. But as soon as the topic of equal rights for homosexuals, people become uncomfortable and uneasy, not knowing which opinion is right and wrong and right. Surprisingly the majority of Americans voted for the Constitutional Amendment, which puts a ban on gay marriage. This amendment entitles to equal rights to the gay community, ending toleration of discrimination in jobs, rights protecting gays from hate crimes, rights allowing advancement in government. However, the concept of gay marriage is still not considered a right the American people should extend to homosexuals. II. The vast majority of opponents believe marriage should be between one woman and one man, meaning marriage should be between members of the opposite sex. Otherwise, the marriage would be called “untraditional”. I often think how silly this may seem to a homosexual, what if they wonder where this general unknown rule came from. Who defines marriage? Recently, many court systems say there are no evidence towards why homosexuals should not be allowed to marry. Assuming these courts realize the American principle of human rights stated before. One such case, Lawrence vs. Texas, determined "all sodomy laws in the United States are unconstitutional and unenforceable when applied to non- commercial consenting adults in private." In other words, sodomy
A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)
Gay marriage has slowly become a significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. On June 26, 2015, it was ruled out by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay marriage was now legal. The first thing that I thought was that “Wasn’t it already legal in the United States?” Well, apparently no it has not been legalized in the United States! (Dumb me.) The U.S. is known to be a nation of equality and gives everyone the freedom of the speech, but it is actually a nation full of racism, sexism, and homophobias. Our country gives us the freedom to do many things, but to gay couples they don’t have much freedom as others do. We are violating their freedom because we aren’t letting them marry the one they love, so to say that everyone in the U.S. has the freedom to do anything is wrong. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which many homosexual people are not allowed to chase, but thanks to the new ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court homosexual people are allowed to chase it. They are being looked down at and are feeling ashamed of themselves because of all the cruelty that they are receiving. Homosexual people haven’t been able to fully express themselves until it was legalized for them to fully do so. They have been fighting for the right to be married to their same sex for about a decade now, and they have finally met their goal. #Lovewins.
Of the many societal customs engrained in humanity, marriage may be one of the most prevalent. For most of history, man and woman have displayed their capacity for affection through this formality; and, for most of history, marriage has been limited to only man and woman. Like marriage, however, homosexuality too has existed for thousands of years. One could even argue that it is simply a part of human nature. Nonetheless, those who identify as anything but heterosexual have been persecuted for hundreds of years. In the United States of America, gay marriage has been legal since 2015 -- and although legal, the opposition persists to this day through politicians and religious groups. For example, while the Constitution of the United States
Who defines marriage? Recently, many lower courts say there is no legal evidence as to why homosexuals should not be allowed to marry. These lower courts realize the American principle of human rights. These laws and beliefs appear to be prejudice in the most direct way, rather than an undeniable reason of denying people their civil rights. Countries throughout the developed world have extended equal rights of marriage to same-sex couples. The first country to do so was Denmark in 1989. These countries were able to observe and document how legalizing gay marriage only made the institution of marriage stronger, both for heterosexuals and homosexuals. In 1993 Norway formed Registered Domestic Partnerships, and in 1996, Iceland formed Registered Cohabitations. Both of these legislations extended gay marriage.
Gay marriage has been a controversial topic throughout all of time. Until recently, straight marriage was the only kind of marriage acceptable to most people. Gay marriage is defined as the legal marriage between two people of the same sex. In the United States of America, Same-sex marriage is legal, but it has not always been that way. Since the 70’s, the path to marriage equality for homosexuals has not been easy. It took blood, sweat, tears, and countless hours of protest for gay marriage to gain equality in the US, but in the end, it was all worth it.
“We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.” In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall Riots, had non-straight, non-cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon.
Imagine that a government purposefully denied over 1,000 rights and benefits from one group of people who haven 't broken any laws, would you support that government? Years ago, homosexuality was unacceptable. Most that were gay hid it from others and did not act upon it. In the United States, same-sex couples are denied legal marriage. Gay marriage in the United States is a big conflict nowadays and we as the people have to do something to fix it. We need to fight for equal rights guaranteeing marriage rights to same sex couples. The fight for the allowance of same-sex marriages has been a long process, and just recently the issue is coming more into the light of current politics. In a country where there is separation between church and
Did you know that 52% of the population support gay marriage and 40% of the population do not (Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage), but what happens with that 8% that doesn’t know or doesn’t care? What if the 8% could help people be happy. Did you know 10% of the population in the world is gay (Robison)? There are so few gays in our population. Are people just being selfish or do they honestly believe that it’s such a bad thing and that having gays could cause problems. I hope in this paper you see what side you want to support and go with.
An outstanding citizen who pays their taxes, serves their community and abides by the law deserves the rights of an American; however, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Gays and lesbians are consistently denied rights that are typically taken for granted by the average American. Specifically, gay and lesbian couples are denied the right to marry even if they are outstanding citizens. They are held at an unfair disadvantage solely because of their sexual orientation. This discrimination must stop, because gay and lesbian couples are law-abiding citizens too, who should be afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples. Marriage is about love and commitment; this means that since we are all human, we all deserve the right to be married. Many people disagree, however, but marriage between homosexuals cannot damage the marriage between heterosexuals. It is also true that if heterosexual couples that can’t have kids can get married than there should be no arguments that say homosexual people cannot get married because they cannot have children. Some people fail to believe that gay marriage is protected by the US Constitution 's commitments to liberty and equality, but because homosexuals are not any less human, they deserve to be married just as much as heterosexual people. Because homosexuals cannot damage the sanctity of marriage, deserve the rights protected by the constitution, and do not deserve to be denied marriage because of their lack of reproduction,
Up until about ten years ago the thought of same-sex marriage in the United States was taboo and predominately looked at as wrong. This was only dreamt about for many yet over the decades it has become more and more a reality each day. In American society today they 're 35 States where gay marriage is legal and only 15 where it is not. Despite the number of states on board, the gay community still doesn 't have the same rights as heterosexuals. In most cultures, the LGBTQ community can 't adopt or marry, and a lot of religious still oppose homosexuality. Although the gay rights movement is extremely popular, should there be limits? Can homosexuals be just as good parents as heterosexual parents? Is it right for a child to grow up with
Throughout the world love comes in many shapes, sizes, and origins. Although it has never been an issue in the animal kingdom, homosexuality has become a controversial point for the people of the United States. As of June 2015, legal marriage is now the constitutional right of all Americans regardless of their sexual orientation or in which state they reside. Although it is now recognized as a fundamental right for all citizens across our country, same-sex marriage is still a large controversy for many in our country. The Supreme Court itself shows this with the fact that the decision came down to a 5-4 voting split in favor of allowing same sex marriages. Marriage is now and always will be the right of every American citizen regardless of their race, religion, or sexual orientation.
Over time, society’s beliefs over human rights have changed dramatically. For example, interracial marriage was first declared constitutional and a basic right of all individuals during 1967. Decades previous to this year, it was considered taboo to interfere with the purity of one’s race. However, people eventually grew to accept that individuals of separate races can develop a loving relationship and should be able to express their feelings to the world. Nowadays, Americans, along with other people around the globe, are beginning to welcome the idea that individuals of the same gender can develop strong, loving bonds as well. Nonetheless, a portion of the population of the United States believes that the definition of marriage is “… the intimate union and equal partnership of a man and a woman” (“Meaning and Purpose”). Individuals with this belief have been attempting to elect government officials with the ability to suggest laws that forbid same-sex marriage such as a proposed amendment, which failed to pass in 2004, that declared that a marriage was to be composed of a man and a woman. Same-sex matrimonies and the definition of marriage have caused wide controversy, the establishment of supportive and opposing groups, and the formation of different thoughts over the topics that amendments should cover.
The topic of gay marriage has been a widely well-known subject that seems quite controversial to many. Some reasons as to why this is a well-known and complicated subject is because many people believe that gay marriage goes against the bible’s definition of marriage which can only be the joining of a man and women people think that it also goes against the fact that this country was originally based upon Christian principles and morals. Furthermore, it is understandable why this case document 14-556 passed at United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, Western Division at Roberts court by James Obergefell the barely with a 5 to 4 win for people who agree with gay marriage.
Same sex marriage is a topic today that brings strong moral objections from both sides. Should same sex marriage be allowed? Should these people be given the same rights in their relationship as heterosexual couples? Why restrict these citizens from their rights just because of their love for another? Should we deny foreign customs to foreigners just because they aren’t customs we perform? The United States is a land of the free, not the restricted. We are not robots set to one program, and one program alone. Every human being is an individual, and they all do things their own way. If you were in their position, you would want the same thing. You would want to be happy. Homosexual couples have rights as human beings to get married for love, family, and protection.
Imagine you have been with your better half for years and you have now decided that you want to marry that person and spend the rest of your life with them, but you can’t because you’re the same sex. For years this has been the struggle for many same sex couples. The same basic right to share your bond with your loved one for the rest of the world to see through paper and ring has been denied by law and church, until June of 2015. Some argue that they had the opportunity to combine in what is known as a civil union. But this type of marriage union only gives them legal protections as a couple but only on the state level. Which means no federal protections and move to another state and those same protections no longer imply to you. In this paper I want to show you the facts of why I feel same-sex marriage is the right thing to do. I believe that same sex marriage should be legal because couples should be able to show their commitment to each other regardless of gender, couples that are committed and have families should be legally allowed to claim each other, and religion should not be able to state who has the right to love whom.
