I met Kennedy Cole January 24, 2017 in my friend’s dorm and I asked her to be my conversational partner because she was the only person that I didn’t already know in the dorm. My first impression from her was “she is pretty and she smokes!” because in my culture, Korea, female smoking isn’t very common and I also wasn’t used to seeing smoking girls ever since I lived in America. Almost every time I see her and got to socialize with her, I saw her smoke with the electric cigarette and at first it shocked me that she smokes very often and when I asked her if girl smoking in America is common and doesn’t portray her bad, she replied, “Smoking isn’t only for men, women have the right to smoke how much she wants. Men and women are equal” (Kennedy …show more content…
Even though the equality score is over 70%, there are still lot of incident where women isn’t getting as much benefits as men do in America. NBA, National Basketball Association, is very famous sport in America; however, only NBA, men basketball team is very well known and not WNBA and the salary difference is ridiculous, “Diana Taurasi made the All-Women's National Basketball Association First Team in 2014 and helped the Phoenix Mercury win the league's championship. That season, she was paid the WNBA maximum salary of $107,500. In 2013-14, the Phoenix Suns employed Dionte Christmas for 198 minutes… he was paid the league minimum of $490,180” (David Berri …show more content…
United States of America has a long-term orientation score of 26/100, which means that America values present life and isn’t worried about the future life as much as they do in their present life. Per Alexa DeFiore (2013), Short Term Oriented countries prefer to follow along with tradition rather than take a route of saving their money with the drawback of having to sacrifice some of the things one want. For example, in long term orientated country, when they go to grocery to buy strawberry but sees that the blueberry is on sale, then they will buy blueberry instead but in short term orientated country, if they decided to buy strawberry, then they will buy strawberry although the blueberry is on sale (Alexa
In “As I Lay Dying”, by William Faulkner, he incorporates the use of Biblical allusions and other works of literature along the lines of “The Odyssey”. Faulkner’s association with the two novels is that he wants to present the important take on the idea of Man’s spiritual journey. In this case, in “As I lay Dying” it would be the journey that the Bundrens take to get Addie to New Hope, and in “The Odyssey”, Odysseus’s journey is traveling back home from the Trojan war. Faulkner chooses to relate The Odyssey and As I Lay dying, because they both incorporate Biblical references.
Many women professional basketball players work hard, are dedicated, and have a genuine love for the game; however, many of them are very underpaid when compared to the men professional basketball players. The difference between what men and women are paid for the same job is referred to as the gender wage gap. In the United States that gap is 78 cents, so a woman is paid 78 cents for every dollar paid to a man doing the same work. Lynx player Maya Moore said, "We’re not super rich like the guys … but money’s not everything when you’re talking about dynasties and legacies, and inspiring young women and men, and opening people’s minds." Obviously, they do not play for the money, they play because they love the game of basketball. The women basketball players work really hard and inspire more people everyday. They should be awarded and paid the equal amount just as any male basketball player.
Welcome to the service audit report on Bell State Bank and Trust, a locally originated bank that was formerly known as State Bank and Trust of Fargo. This report covers the business model of Bell State Bank and Trust and focuses exclusively on the service marketing aspect of the business. In the beginning of the report I have provided a general overview of the banking industry. This part is important in understanding and comprehending the level of progress or shortcomings of the subject bank. By realizing how fast the banking sector is progressing, it gives us a reference point to analyze the progress of Bell State Bank. I have also discussed the competitive environment of the bank. In this section I realized that Bell State was one of those financial institutions that is hard to classify as it has smaller roots and is close to its origins, however it has a huge asset of $3 Billion that transcends the limits of small regional banks. The firm’s competitive advantages highlight that the firm prides itself in its community ties. It is these ties that have led to the banks local sourcing of employees, philanthropy, past growth and public image.
Places like the USA have shown great inequality. This can be supported by the fact of unequal job pay, racial inequality and discrimination. Despite this being faced between both genders it is mostly targeted to females. The use of unequal job pay suggests that the USA has not developed its equality, therefore, more uprising and gender wars become more common due to this. Also racial inequality between genders is also a problem in America’s society. It is proven that men earn about 20% more than women. However different coloured women earn 40% less than men. This indicates that not only gender discrimination is happening but also racism within that. This doubles the attacks against women as most women are from foreign countries which differ them in colour from other people. This difference symbolises the difference in women and men. This shows us that
Equality is something Americans strive to provide and maintain. It has become an integral and necessary part of our mosaic culture. Even now to the point that when people think of America, they naturally think of freedom and equality. People of many different races, disabilities and creeds have come to the United States seeking the impartiality upon which this country was founded. The institutions of this country have relied upon it, just as it was the created by the events in the laying of moral foundations. The expression of America's citizens plays an extremely significant role in the history of equality in American society. In the pursuit of equality and the "American Dream," people have authored inspiring
America is one of the most diverse countries in the world in that it has a manifold of nationalities, races, languages, religions, and cultures. While there are plenty of differences between all of the American citizens, there are some aspects that unite us all such as liberty, equality, and opportunity. Thus, an American uses his liberties that are given, is accepting and fair towards others, and utilizes the various opportunities offered. An American must commit himself to these ideals since these are the very ideals that America was founded on.
This on-running issue over unequal pay between men and women in the same area of work is sadly something that is not new in the 21st century. It has been around for as long as women entered the same field as men and has yet to be fixed. Now, when the problem is looked at in professional sports, there is no difference. No matter if both teams have an equally successful season, or if one triumphs over the other, it is always the guys who get the big bucks while the girls are given a significantly smaller amount. Just take a look at the U.S women 's soccer team who had just won the 2015 world cup not too long ago. One of international soccer 's most prestigious events, the team was awarded a nice amount of two million dollars. However, the U.S men’s soccer team on the other hand was given nine millions dollars, and they had lost in the midst of round 16 of their tournament. In what way, shape, or form is this fair? In an article by Scott Stump for Today News, he acknowledges the major victories that the USWNT (U.S Women’s National Team) has achieved, and what little the men have done in comparison. Stump states, “The women also shattered ratings records for soccer games in America with a record 26.7 million tuning in to watch them beat Japan in the World Cup final. The women have won three straight Olympic gold medals as well as three World Cup titles overall, while
America broke away from Britain on July 4th, 1776 to gain freedom and not to be judged by religion, but here in 2017 we still haven’t gained equality. People since the 1800’s haven’t understood new ideas that are outside of the box and out of their comfort zone, this still is going on today with people refusing to look from a different perspective. For example, muslims have been getting judged by everybody and everyone is scared of them. This shows that America still has a long way to go to achieve equality.
Gender inequality has engulfed the United States and placed copious varying roles onto the male and female sexes. According to Leila Aboulela, Minaret, “All through life there were distinctions - toilets for men, toilets for women; clothes for men, clothes for women - then, at the end, the graves are identical.” Discrimination places women into different roles and takes away numerous privileges. However in America today after more than a century of struggles by dedicated activists who fought to alter these ideals and gain further rights, the perception of women in society and their contributions to society have been greatly transformed.
For 91 years, the United States of America has become the sole superpower of the world by maintaining its global leadership and competitive position in both military and economic strength. As jobs and companies are being created around the world to improve their infrastructure and economy, the United States of America must also be willing to get back on its feet and continue to become the superpower it is. As the years continue, the future will be different with in advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For the United States of America according to a 2008 survey by USA Today states that only 26% of the people who were surveyed had a clear understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and the United States citizens ability in math, science, and problem solving has dropped below to
I believe Patriarchy best explains the gender pay gap for many reasons.First of all when people think of a Patriarchal society, they think of the extreme tradition of women not allowed to work, vote, etc.Today Patriarchy does exist but its often manifests in casual ways that tend to go unnoticed by the majority of the population. But quiet enough to cause gender pay gap.
There is supposed to be equal protection for everyone in the United States, but in reality, there isn’t. People who are minority and of color get targeted, because of their race, gender, and class, while wealthy white people are put on a pedal stool and hardly ever get in trouble by the law. In many case the wealthy are not arrested nor are they given a sentence for their wrongful doing, they are allowed to get away with murder (86). In the meantime, poor people are not given the same treatment and can be sentence to 15 years, 25 years, or life in prison for committing minor offense. The Social sphere is inequality that has increased, women who work the same hours as a man are looked down on because they are supposed to be at home with the
The article discussed the debate between governor Romney and President Obama. The article brought out how both candidates focused on womens' labor as a family issue. The sociology aspect of gender discrimination and workplace inequality is emphasized as well. The author states at the latter part of the article that: “both candidates need to be better informed on the complex factors that produce workplace inequality (Debating Gender Workplace Inequality).”
“You won’t get paid. As a woman and of color, you’re going to be underpaid, so there’s really no point,” Daniel recalled (“Career and Workplace” 4). A future law graduate was told to throw away her dreams in regards to gender inequality. A girl named Reshma Daniel had to give up what she loved most because of a situation regarding both her race and gender. Reshma Daniel’s parents moved to America from India with just a couple dollars. Her parents wanted their children to live the American life. For Daniel, that simply meant law school. While at Nova in Southeastern University in Florida, she majored in legal studies and job shadowed a family lawyer. After a pretrial hearing had taken place, another lawyer, a Vietnamese woman, told Daniel
Inequalities are hard to escape from in today’s society, and all genders and identities have setbacks that need to be sought out and resolved. When most people hear about gender equality, they automatically assume that the speaker is talking about women’s rights, but both men and women have struggles that won’t just go away on their own. On top of that, transgendered people have another weight on their shoulders, no matter which gender they’re transitioning to. The world is constantly moving in different directions, and no matter the gender of an individual, the fact that they deserve the right to equal pay, treatment, education, visibility, and healthcare still stands.
