Gender inequality is a huge issue in today’s world, especially in Italy, and has systematically been ingrained into different aspects of society. One of those aspects that is often overlooked is immigration; this is a problem that has been going on for generations. On Ellis Island Italian women had to have a man to depend on in order to migrate to the states or otherwise they were detained and deported. Now in Italy, women must be sexually available to men through trafficking in order to immigrate and are still forced into administrative detention without receiving aid because they are illegal migrants. Different circumstances seen through different historical lenses; but the root of the issue is the same. Gender discrimination in Italy Italian immigration has had an effect on the experience of female immigrants, both historically and in the refugee crisis today.
The root of gender discrimination in the immigration process stemmed from gender inequality in the Italian and American culture. In Italy women were seen in their traditional roles as mothers and wives. Women were confined in a strict female character that followed certain societal expectations. Females in the community did not work labor jobs, they were greeted in passing only if accompanied by a husband, and solely found entertainment only at church, talking with other women, or at home. In their home women did all the housework, cared for the children, and did not have a voice in matters of the family or estate.
There are many social injustice issues that the world is facing today. Many ethnic and racial groups are still fighting hard against prejudice and discrimination. Another group that is still facing inequality today, is women. When it comes to inequality in the world today, women as a whole get overlooked. We like to think that we have evolved in our culture and have come so far that often when we think about inequality, we tend to focus and think about minorities such as African Americans, Native Americans and the like. We don’t really think about women and inequality, most people think of women having the same rights and privileges as everyone else does in America, but after doing research and looking at statistics women inequality is still
Life in Italy in the 1930’s caused difficulty to some Italians during that time period. During the 1930’s a large number of Italians who had opposed the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini arrived in the United States. After the news spread in Italy about the bombing of Pearl Harbour almost all Italians supported the war against Benito Mussolini. At this point, Italy was slowly becoming under the Nazi rule, the significance of a woman’s role in Italy was emphasised as they were expected to accept the fascist ideology. Girls were expected to get married and conceive lots of children. Many young women in Italy felt the pressures of politics that were dominated by men and felt that women’s rights were disappearing
When discussing what are the existing gender roles in Italy (and in any other country), we need to remember that such roles are not only established or created by biological or physical circumstances, but rather by the various living conditions of these individuals. In the past, it is well known that Italy was one of those countries following the ideal that the men would work while the women would reproduce and control private issues, but this has started to change when during the first World War women would have active roles in the production process, something that the Fascist regime immediately tried to stop through discrimination of women, but did not last long as during the 1960s economic boom the amount of autonomy and freedom floating
There are hundreds and thousands of athletes all around the world but the main problem in the athlete world is gender inequality, women are not shown equal as men. They are discriminated in many ways such as pay, employment opportunities, value of women 's sport, media coverage etc. Despite the federal law passed called Title IX that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination." there is still gender inequality women are considered less than men. No matter what happens people will always have inequality against men and women because of the environment they live in and how they were raised. Women are
When Italian families first arrived in America around 1900, they stayed true to the old proverb “father headed, but mother centered” when regarding to the family. The role of married women did not change that much if at all when coming to America, the only difference was serving the family in a different continent. Married women still could not handle or deal with money that the husband brought in, instead just inquire what was needed around the house. These women main job, as they were in Italy, stayed very
Domestic labor in the United states has divided the market by gender roles. There is a demand by middle and upper-class women for domestic labor in the home, so they can focus on continuing working and sustain family structures. Women are emigrating from Mexico and Central America to fill these roles in the
Race relations in the United States may not be everything that it can be, but at least mainstream media knows better than to put blatantly racist headlines on the front of their papers or magazines. Even with freedom of speech and the press, restraint in the name of peace and civility is accepted practice in America. Other countries do not have to follow these standards, and sometimes we can be shocked at what shows up in the headlines around the world.
The effect of women's employment on inequality is not straight forward and depends mostly on patterns of selection into the labor market. Previous research in the US found that wives' employment reduced inequality among families because women's wages complemented the household income and drived family income towards the center of the income distribution. It is clear that in order for the household income inequality to decline, women’s labor force participation should be relatively high (Cancian & Reed, 1999; Nielsen & Alderson, 1997). Albrecht and Albrecht (2007) also reported that increased female employment results in lower levels of inequality, and Western et al. (2008) found that among families with children, women participation has an
Since World War II, Italian society has profoundly changed, with a significant impact on daily life. One of the main elements of change is the more visible role women play in society outside the home, such as increased participation in higher education and various professions. One aspect of this changed role is that Italy records one of the lowest average numbers of children per woman in the world, as well as some of the lowest birth and fertility rates. We all have fears but we can’t become a whole person if we don’t allow ourselves to express our struggles. It’s the certain incidents that we have encountered in the lives that make us who are today. On page 42, Andre Lorde (2007) discusses how minorities have had the opportunities of both being “invisible and visible” but yet, still receive so much hate from society. She also discusses how women of color “are not meant to survive” which I thought was very interesting because this world is made of both women and men. There are so many successful women that exist on this earth and if it wasn’t for them, little girls wouldn’t have the opportunity to see women in power and see themselves through them. Although hundreds of years have past where
Do you think the contemporary family structure is the root for gender inequality within the United States today? Why or Why not? Do you feel women are inherently “nurturing” with an instinct toward love and service? Does this instinct interfere with a woman’s ability towards logic, reason, and decision making?
As the inequalities in this world are increasing, the amount of people aware of it is decreasing. People’s views on inequalities have been advancing for years; but as it became more common people have stopped noticing these social injustices. As the world is transitioning, people's views on gender and race are developing with it and it is for the worse.
Today most children in the United States attend classes where gender equality exists. Students have classes in which both boys and girls are treated equally and are friends with one another and that is all that they have ever known. However, this is not always the case in every country. As of 2015, 53% of the children who are not attending school throughout the world are female ("11 Facts About..."). Gender inequality is an important issue that needs to be focused on and fixed throughout the world, especially within the education systems. Although many people are aware of this issue, most people do not see it as a priority in the world right now. The gender gap in education systems throughout the world needs to be closed because gender equality is a necessity in the world and this is where it all starts.
Despite America being one of the most powerful counties in the world, there is still the issue of gender inequality. America has one of the most or the most influential ability yet still falls short on gender equality. The workplace in America needs some in improvement in the aspect of paying both men and women the same. The insensitivity of gender equality has had people in the workplace and in everyday situations speaks out about the equality women deserve. These situations have sparked feminist movements all around American and the world including actress Emma Watson’s HeForShe campaign and the United States Woman’s National Soccer Team filing complaints for unequal pay. Both men and women are tired seeing the inequality just because of
Social status and structures have definitely shaped the construction and experience of gender inequality. Men and women are constantly analyzed, compared, and grouped together in society. The result of this yields discrepancies in how sexes are viewed by society. Throughout my examination and explanation of gender inequality, I concluded both men and women are victims to gender inequality.
