Gender Inequality
Gender inequality is the preference or favoritism against an individual completely or even halfway because of their gender. This belief system begins from the socially built traditions as to who belongs where in the family and workforce since the old days. Now as possible as it is that people of all genders are vulnerable to it, in the present society, it is evident that a man is preferred over a woman to take lead or handle the situation with poise, strength, and vigor. It can be seen almost every situation where men are treated as the main or head within a group of people and women are slighted over almost unwittingly. This unequal treatment can be seen in different social conditions and places like learning establishments, colleges, holy places, workspaces, recreations, and occasions to give some examples.
Women are forced to face more hurdles in life every day and prove so much more to be termed as an equal to a man in the society. Moreover, the same hard-earned position in the society is much more vulnerable than a man. A single mistake or wrong judgment could very easily shove that woman’s life into a corner. To put it in detail, most of the times, people question the qualities and experience of the person taking charge of a situation or a group of people. Gender inequality has become a more pronounced global dispute among the media in 2016. We can trace the inequality of genders back to the beginning of time, but one major aspect that was discussed in class is coverture. Coverture was a legal doctrine in the early 19th century United States that essentially defined wives to be the legal property of her husband. Women restricted by coverture has no existence outside of their marriage. They had no right to vote, could not own property, or do any business under their own name. Coverture did not come to an end until the mid 20th century, which was a long and torturous fight for women. The Women’s Suffrage movement in the 1920s could be cause for the extinction of coverture altogether.
Gender inequality is the discrimination against women, who experience multiform of oppression from the inequality environment. Women are inferior to men in ordinary way of thinking. At present human society, gender discrimination is an extension of traditional culture from the point of history. Therefore, the problem faced by female result from the influence of workplace exiting gender bias.
Social status and structures have definitely shaped the construction and experience of gender inequality. Men and women are constantly analyzed, compared, and grouped together in society. The result of this yields discrepancies in how sexes are viewed by society. Throughout my examination and explanation of gender inequality, I concluded both men and women are victims to gender inequality.

As far advanced as we think we may have become, gender inequality is still a prominent issue in our society today. the topic of gender roles is a very sensitive topic which is not easy to avoid, because it entwines with numerous aspects of our daily lives such as sexual orientation, identification, basic human rights, healthcare, etc. The effect of gender inequality on the magnitude of gender differences in authoritarianism may change depending on the cultural context, in particular whether a society is predominantly individualistic versus collectivistic (Brandt, 2012). There are many aspects that play different roles in gender inequality in the society, and one of them is sex. A lot of people often assume that gender and sex are the same thing, but it is actually not true. Gender is defined as a socially transferred variation of man and women, while sex is the biological difference between human based on their reproductive organs. Norms and values of a society are usually built upon gender roles Gender roles because it increases the influence of these roles.
Men and women inequality has been a controversial issue in today’s society due to affecting women’s well-being. Discrimination in workplaces, financial issues, lack of rights, limited access to education and partial opportunities in building a career are all results of gender inequality. The cause of this social issue began early in history when women did not have the right to vote. In previous times, women stayed at home and cleaned, cooked, and took care of children while the men worked. Progressively over time things have gotten better. Although there are still numerous circumstances where the social issue still impacts women today.
Currently, 63 percent of female college students identify as feminist (Zimmerman). Despite the growing popularity of this term, society is oblivious to what feminism truly is. Many people have a negative connotation of feminists, and would never consider themselves to be one because they don’t know that feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights. Additionally, society has become brainwashed to the sexism both men and women face on a day to day basis. Therefore, feminist beliefs should be integrated into each man and woman’s life because gender inequality negatively affects all members of society.
Occupational segregation and gender equality within the workforce has been extensively debated over recent decades. Gender equality within the workforce is achieved when all individuals have access and receive equal benefits, resources and opportunities regardless of their gender (WGA, 2017). This requires workplaces to; distribute equal paid work or work of comparative value, eliminate barriers that restrict full or equal employment for women, provide women with access to all industries and occupations, allow women the opportunity to hold leadership roles and eliminate gender discrimination, especially regarding care responsibilities (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2017). In doing so, these features enable women to uphold the flexibility and work opportunities that their male-counterparts enjoy. Attaining gender equality is important as it provides a foundation for society to function at its full human potential and become the most efficient and resourceful nation possible (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2017). The purpose of this essay is to analyse whether the recent increase of women entering the workforce correlates to gender inequality within the workforce. The first section of this paper will provide an understanding that despite increasing levels of women’s participation in the workforce, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles such as CEOs. Long time ago, parents tended to invest on their sons rather than their daughters. In the past, most of boys went to school, and girls stayed home. At that moment, the women were not treated equally because they did not go outside to work. The women only stayed home to take care of children and do housework, so they depended on their husband financially. Nowadays people have still treated one another differently based on group identity, especially when it comes to gender appearances. Gender inequality has been happening around the world, it still occurs at some careers, workplaces, and at home. Culture has a great impact on gender inequality in some developing countries. For instance, Vietnamese people like to have more sons rather than daughters because they believe in “raising a daughter is like watering your neighbors’ garden,” and raising a daughter as “ploughing someone else’s field” (Jayachandran, 2014, p. 11). In Vietnam, parents usually invest more on their sons rather than daughters because the sons play a significant role in religious rituals. Jayachandran (2014) reported that “sons will carry on the family name or widows wanting to retain family land also make the first son especially valuable” (p.14). Therefore, the sons are valued in my family. I still remember when I was a child, I saw my mother tried to be pregnant several times to have baby boys. However, she had only one boys, and four girls accidently. When I was a little, I noticed the gender was
Inequality is the lack of equality to certain people based on numerous things (Sternheimer 136). In this paper, I intend to discuss inequality and how it affects gender, race, disabilities, and social classes. Many people in the United States struggle with inequality on a daily basis, whether it be not being able to find a job due to skin color or socioeconomic status or not given the same opportunity as others due to a disability. A perfect example of inequality is portrayed in the medical drama “The Good Doctor” in the drama we see a surgeon with autism who struggles to get a residence as a surgeon in a hospital because of his mental disability. They label his disability as a liability and all except one of the hospital board members do not want to give him a job.
Gender inequality is a serious problem in our community. Since childhood I saw my mom work long hours in order to bring food to our table. Unfortunately for me, I never got to see my dad since he left my mom before I was born. I grew up in Monticello, New York, a place known for its poverty and violence. Monticello featured woman working in grocery stores and men seen selling and abusing drugs on the streets. Whenever an expensive car would drive by, men would stare and express verbal signs of hatred towards the owner. Since this was the lifestyle I grew up around, I had to make a choice whether to stay here, sell drugs or go to college and pursue a healthier life. An important factor that contributed to my decision, was a recent encounter I had with gender expectations. I understood why our perception, state of mind, was a key factor that determined gender inequality, how it determined who gets hired, who contributes most to his or her work and why this was such a problem.
The topic of this report is gender equality which addresses both men and women’s rights and those who identify as a specific gender and how they are affected in modern day. This led to many debates on the issue of gender equality so why is gender considered an issue in today’s society? Anyone can specify themselves to a gender and within each gender there is a risen conflict such as how certain genders are treated. This issue affects everyone from the people of the United States of America (views from political areas) to the ones who passionately reveal that gender inequality is a human rights issue. The United States is a country of freedom so it is important to note that identifying this issue now could result in a change of freedoms or rights for all. We have to tackle this issue through different perspectives such as identifying yourself whether or not it is right for women to be treated differently from men. In our constitution, the 9th amendment states “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.” (Staff, Lll). This shows that we can not make individual judgements based solely on the person’s gender; however, people in modern society continue to state their bias within politics.
The oppression of women is based on false assumption and preconceived notions by the male domination world, has been obvious and responsible for paving the way for serious gender issues to emerge. Due to the narrow realms of activity in society, deprived from essential human rights, restricted educations scope, open to unhealthy physical and mental abuse, this society has not given women the opportunity to rise to their full potential. The impact of gender discrimination has not only affected the future of the women today but it has resulted in the slow progress of human mind in general.
