In this paper I will discuss gender role and its impact on inequality. I will discuss gender inequality and its impact on creating as well demolishing families. I will mention different family structures and how gender roles have changed throughout time. I will explain how feminism has given opportunities to women and in effect transformed the family structure. First let me define gender. Gender is composed of three parts: biology, gender roles, and sexuality. Gender roles are the behaviors, attitudes, appearance, and etcetera that a specific culture has deemed appropriate for a specific sex. May I note that gender roles can and do vary between cultures. Some cultures even include a third gender category because not everyone fits within the gender binary. The BBC news in Europe posted an article about the recognition of a third gender. “They are known as "intersex" people because they have a mixture of male and female chromosomes or even genitalia which have characteristics of both genders.” I keep viewing gender role from a functionalist perspective. Gender role has been created to produce some kind of boundary between the sexes to achieve particular goals among the people; it has a function. However, is causes dysfunction in the inequality it produces. Not only does it produce inequality for women but it can hurt men, too.
