Choi-yong-sul was born in 1904 in Chung buk Province in Korea. According to Choi, he was abducted by a sweet Japanese merchant named Morimoto, at the age of approximately eight years old. After being abducted, Choi eventually made his way to Osaka as a beggar. After being picked up by the police, Choi was then placed in a buddhist temple, which cared for orphans. Choi spent two difficult years at the temple. Choi had a tendency of getting into fights, and had a intense interest in the temples murals, which had displayed war scenes. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness- according to the Declaration of Independence, these are rights that everyone is entitled to by natural law. It can definitely be said that since July 4, 1776, the United States has expanded these rights to a large majority of its citizens; however this expansion took place over two centuries. What about the past few decades? Take, for example, the year 1996. Have we made any progress since then regarding these inalienable rights? It is my belief that within these past two decades, America has moved closer to the ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence; especially in regard to laws concerning civil rights.

Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time is a true representation of his "lost generation" for the simple reason that all generations are eventually lost as time goes by. Hemingway focuses on a generation he knows about, his own. It becomes apparent throughout the novel that Hemingway is deconstructing the world without overly using vast amounts of description. All of the “messages" bring the reader to an understanding of a generation, the "lost generation" that appears to result from Hemingway's novel.
