General Intro Transformational leadership theory is one of the most prominent leadership theories in organisational psychology (c.f. Despite the general consensus that the student-supervisor relationship is of great importance to the supervision process, there is a lack of existing empirical research on the topic. To the best of the author’s knowledge, to date, the student supervisor relationship at undergraduate level has not been empirically examined from a leadership perspective, and the mechanisms by which student supervisor relationships impact upon positive student outcomes remain to be from an empirical standpoint, at all levels of study. The main aims of this study are 1) To establish whether transformational leadership in research supervision is positively related to relevant student outcomes such as engagement and academic performance, and 2) To explore the mechanisms underlying that relationship; specifically the student-supervisor relationship and satisfaction of student’s basic psychological needs. 1. A& B. Transformational Leadership and Positive Student Outcomes Transformational leaders motivate followers by inspiring them through the articulation of a positive vision of the future, and expressing confidence in their ability to achieve that vision. Leaders exhibit role modelling behaviours, encouraging followers to identify with the values of the leader or organisation and invest extra effort in pursuit of group goals.
