Lesson One: Learn to Look Desired outcome: Help participants learn how to spot a crucial conversation by looking at the content and conditions; be vigilant when safety or respect is at risk and observe signs when you or others start resorting to silence or violence. Objectives: This first module is about paying particularly close attention to both the content and the conditions of a crucial conversation. An emphasis is placed on being aware of not just what is being said, but also how it is being said and how your audience is reacting. Short warm up activity: A key portion of this lesson is to look for and identify physical, emotional, and behavioral cues. The warm up activity for this module consists of having the participants stand and showing them pictures depicting various emotional states (smiling face - emotion, arms crossed - physical, eye rolling - behavioral). Participants are encouraged to call out the characteristics they observe (more than one for each photo) and then to physically mirror or repeat the action, emotion, or behavior themselves. Photos should start off easy and then gradually increase in subtlety, humor, and …show more content…
This quiz helps participants identify how they normally respond in these conditions. It should consist of approx twenty true/false questions with statements like this: T/F Rather than tell people how I feel, I sometimes rely on jokes, sarcasm, or cynicism to share my frustration. T/F After I share strong opinions, I go out of my way to invite other to share their views, particularly opposing ones. The quiz questions should be created leading people to identify whether they have tendencies for silence, violence, or safe conversation. This quiz is easily taken and and scored quickly if a score sheet is prepared ahead of

Analysis of the Conversation I like what William Isaacs says “Dialogue is about a shared inquiry, a way of thinking and reflecting together.” Communication is about authentic connections between people. The goal is to reach new understanding, to motivate and inspire each other, and to enrich relationships. It should be dynamic and productive. Susan Scott in her book “Fierce Conversations” defines that a fierce conversation is one in which we come out from behind ourselves into the conversation and make it real.

The participants were asked to complete a survey. The first step was for the participants to read and understand the information regarding the rules of the survey before they began. After reading and complying with the rules, the participants had a choice to continue with the survey or opt out. The volunteers, were then presented with the newly created measure of fifteen questions regarding their level of anger. Following that were two other measures rating their level of aggression. All the questions were presented for each measure at a time. The participants needed to complete a measure before going to the next one. When the participants completed the final measure, the survey asked the participants to respond to two questions with a short response. When they finished, participants were asked to identify their demographics by answering the demographics questions. A total of 64 questions (including the three measures, two short response and demographics) were given to the participants taking roughly ten minutes to complete. The participants completed the survey online at their own pace without any supervision.

The acclaimed book Crucial Conversations discusses the intricacies of communication and analyzes the potential reasons for dialog deterioration in a group setting. The authors emphasize the importance of making people feel safe to exchange ideas and the techniques to restore balance when safety is threatened. This book, although unique in its views, has its roots embedded in proven psychological theories by James-Lang and Cannon-Bard, which state that emotions cause physiological arousal that stimulates emotional brain activity but reduces the ability for cognitive reasoning (Passer & Smith, 2007, p. 384-386).
Followed by Part One, I found a very keen interest with the next section. The most predominant and effective to reflect on and apply would be Part Two: “The Talker-Listener Process”.
Lorraine Hansberry once said “It’s simple. You read books--to learn facts--to get good grades--to pass the course--to get a degree. It has nothing to do with thoughts.” Of course it as to do with thoughts, but there’s more meaning behind this quote that may seem a little off to others who don’t study in the depths of psychology. Psychology is the study of the overall human brain and mind. There are many types of Psychology, but this quote relates to Behavioral Psychology which is studying observable behaviors rather than mental processes. Furthermore, the father of behaviorism, or B.F. Skinner, looked into operant conditioning. That is, operant conditioning is the process by which people make responses because they have
In the initial grade appeal, I attempt to speak to Dr. Williams, the 103 General Psychology Professor in regards to my grade of an “F,” but he refused to see me or to let me look at my final exam grade. I received an email from Dr. Williams and he stated “I have no intention of changing your grade.” I had completed assignments that I never received a grade for in which I should have received credit, but I did not. I did not get satisfaction from Dr. Williams so I contacted Dr. Eborall.

In Psychology 101, you learn about a personal fable; something that I have not lost. I have always wanted to change the world that I was destined for greatness and teaching elementary school students gives me that power. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
October Sky is a based on a true story about a mining town called Coalwood and one boy’s journey. Homer Hickam is an adolescent boy whose life has been predetermined by his father, a foreman at the coalmine, to work down in the mines but he has a different plan for his life. In October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. After he sees the satellite flying across the night’s sky, Homer becomes inspired to learn how to build rockets. With his friends, who also are destined for the mines, and the local nerd, Homer sets to do just that by trial and a lot of error. Unfortunately, most of the town, especially Homer's father, thinks that the boys are wasting their time. They
Psychology can be applied to everyday life in many ways. The three main ways Psychology applies to my life is through motivation and emotion, Stress and health and Psychological therapies. These topics of psychology are the ones that best describe my life. When most people think of psychology they think of therapists and psychological disorders. Psychology is much more than that and applies to everyone’s life in some form.
In the future, I ultimately intend to be a psychologist. With being a psychologist, I am taking on the responsibility on how to lead people into having an overall better life and promote positive change for them. Psychologists often specialize in studying and examining the brain and human behavior. That being said, psychology is a very important branch of science that attempts to help us stay sane!
