In The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is the antagonist. He lives on Ship Trap island, and hunts stranded sailors for game because they possess all of the qualities that he thinks are important; courage cunning and reason. Zaroff has all of these characteristics, especially the ability to reason. For instance, he tells the Rainsford, the protagonist, “I, luckily had invested heavily in American securities” (Connell, 12). This precaution was well thought out, and allowed Zaroff to keep his fortune after the Crossaks lost the war.
