General Zaroff’s philosophy is one that everyone has lived by ever since the beginning of life and shows that he is a true expert in the field of hunting. In the short story, Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, General Zaroff states that,”Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure” (pg. 225). This statement that Zaroff spoke when he was with Rainsford can summarize many aspects of the world around us. This type of philosophy can be dated back to prehistoric times such as when life first evolved. Even in the short story, there are many times where this comes to light as a well represented theme throughout the development of the plot. History is filled with civilizations conquering and being conquered by others which represents General Zaroff’s philosophical statement. However, in the short story, Most Dangerous Game, there are also many examples of this idea. First of all, when Rainsford is speaking with Whitney over how animals have feelings and what hunters do, he utters this,”Be a realist. The world is made up of two classesーthe hunters and the huntees. Lucky, you and I are the hunters” (pg 216). As you can see from this statement, it shows that the cycle of life and death is controlled by the hunters that are stronger that prey on the weak. If you are a strong, then you are a hunter that can overcome the weak and rise higher until you reach the top of the food chain. This coincides with Zaroff’s philosophy, because it shows that the strong are the ones who live and take the lives of the weaker
