My personal thoughts on the impact of the social media by the PBS Frontline “Generation Like” video was very informative and showed how much I have been out touch with reality with the communication movement with today’s generation and how involved the social media plays a part in our lives. After carefully examining the video and looking back at past court cases, I believe the social media can be a double-edged sword for our adolescence teenagers. The media can either be positive or negative impact on our adolescence children. The video by PBS provided a transparent imagine how teens were able to accomplish a positive self imagine and fame on different social medias like Facebook, Twitter, and My Space to build their self confidence about themselves by communicating with their peers and on a global level of …show more content…
In addition, the social media allows adolescents to gain access to websites anonymously that can provide excellent means of resources for health concerns such as sexually transmitted diseases, depression, stress, and making appointments or communicating with professionals for these types of issues and concerns about them or loved ones. However, there is always a down side to the social media for our adolescents that range in sub groupings such as peer to peer, inappropriate content, privacy violations, and how third parties advertising groups that target our children due to our Like responses on social media. The number one media issue that is brought by parents today’s is cyber bullying or on-line harassment concerns for their children. This was concern by a parent in the PBS video to Mr.
According to CNN, teens spend nine hours a day consuming media. But is that a good thing? Youth can be mocked from posts on social media. Youth is more into their media “life” than real life. One doesn’t even make real friends online. Overall, social media has a negative impact on youth.
Social media is nothing, but a distracting, timewasting, nuisance to everyone surrounded by it, right? Wrong. Social media has changed the world as we know it. People can share information quickly, publish their thoughts, and exchange their ideas. Social media is becoming a certainty in this modern age, which is why it should be embraced rather than criticized. Although there is concern over potential for cyberbullying and lack of privacy, the use of social media is inevitable in teenagers’ lives, and necessary to the positive development of adolescents because it allows adolescents to gain confidence when interacting with others, it encourages users to create and maintain friendships, and it can facilitate learning while promoting educational growth.
Social media is something that has continued to evolve from how it was in the past. Even now social media is being used worldwide through advanced technology. In the video “Growing Up Online,” social media was something that teenagers had grown into and
We live in an era ruled by social media, primarily when it comes to teenagers, social media is used for everything. From communicating with family and friends to being used as a news outlet, and even advertisement for business and companies. This article is titled “Social Media: What's Not to Like,” written by Alison Pearce Stevens. The topic of this essay is the effect social media can have on teenagers. Social media, on one hand, can be used as a great way to share with the world and boost teens’ self-esteem. On the other hand, social media can be used as a place for bullying, body shaming and can cause depression or even suicide in teens.
Older generations don’t realize how much technology has affected this generation of teenagers, along with the social media that comes along with the technology. As stated in “How Social Media Changed Teens’ Lives Forever”; “Negative posts or comments also can do great damage to a teen’s self-esteem.” (Ashley Black, Thomas Atseff and Colleen Kaveney) While many parents think social media is just a way to connect with others, many teenagers take it for granted. For example, “quitting social media because it made her miserable and obsessed with appearing perfect online”, is what a teenager felt about social media and what it has done to her. Though many think that social media is a great way to connect, teenagers take it to another level.
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
In this essay, Michelle Blake explains how pre-teens shouldn’t be allowed on social media. Blake explains how all aspects of social media play a role in teens personality and progressing lack of empathy for others. A natural desire to be popular causes them to constantly try to be funny, noticed, or clever. Once they set any social media platform, they’re now going to be on it a lot more. In hence trying to get the attention they crave. This can lead to the inability to focus on anything but them. Creating lack of general consideration of others and constant focus on ones feelings. The author describes they are not mature enough to make responsible decision. That most teens are living in the moment rather
Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.
Initially, social media is commonly used as a weapon to attack others on their opinions or simply because they despite other people. For instance, cyber bullying has caused huge problems ever since social networks have started becoming popular. “Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once,” (“11 Facts about Cyber Bullying” www.dosomething.org). This is more targeted at teenagers and children because they are unaware of the harmful things they might say over the internet. To illustrate, cyber bullying can become a very serious issue when a minor commits suicide. “Bully-related suicide can be connected to any type of bullying, including . . . cyberbullying, and sexting, or circulating suggestive . . . about a person” (“Cyber Bullying & Social Bullying” http://www.bullyingstatistics.org). It’s the parent’s duty to filter the internet. Based on this information, social media is not necessarily safe, anyone can become a victim
The author of “The upside of selfies: Social media isn’t all bad for kids”, Kelly Wallace, states that there are positive effects of social media on young people. She uses the source of another mom to say that social media can build self-confidence because of all of the positive comments on photos and posts. Wallace also uses a report by Common Sense Media to say that one in five teens believed that social media made them feel more confident. Wallace also stated that teens believed social media made their friendships better. She quotes KidzVuz co-founder Rebecca Levey to say that another positive effect of social
Social media has led many benefits. For example, people are able to spread awareness about mental illness, connect with support groups, and expand searches for research participants. However, users of social media may unknowingly spread false information. Social media also has other drawbacks, which include decreases in-person interactions and increases in cyber-bullying. Children are now have the availability to access a vast amount of information through social media, but the responsibly of having a social media account may be beyond their developmental age abilities. Therefore, the vast increase and interest in social media may lead to researchers investigating human behaviors while noting differences among groups. Additionally, researchers will likely investigate how to assist parents in maintaining appropriate boundaries with social media while remaining safe. From a prevention viewpoint, educating parents and teachers about talking to children about proper use of the internet may be a practical
Every year, "over 25 percent of adolescents and teens [are] bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet." (cyber bullying stats) and "Cyber-bullying [is] becoming more and more rampant in school and after school among teens and children." (Bullying stats). Social media can be a great thing that can open doors to new opportunities and discoveries, however, when used incorrectly, the digital footprint left behind may greatly affect future opportunities. To prevent a negative digital footprint, children and teens must be educated about internet uses.
Despite the positives, there are many negatives associated with social media. Using social media can make a person more vulnerable to predators and cyber bullying. In this age, “Cyber bulling is quite common, can occur to any young person online, and can cause profound psychosocial outcomes including depression, anxiety, severe isolation, and tragically suicide” (“American Academy of Pediatrics”). Cyber bullying impacts society in a negative way because it is harming young teenagers’ minds. Bullies, torment, threat, harass, and even embarrass their victims by using different forms of social media. Using social media can also decrease privacy for an individual. People often give out their personal information not knowing who can see it. To average internet users, “A false sense of security may leave social networking site users vulnerable to security attacks such as hacking, leaking sensitive information, and sending viruses” (“ProCon”). Furthermore, Social media can also lead to brain disorders and can cause people to have a hard time interacting with people face to face. “Social networking entices people to spend more time online and less time talking to a person face to face.” (“ProCon”)
Too much social media and texting can be detrimental to the early developmental stages of psychological adolescence in children. Because teens are so impressionable at the first two stages of adolescence, using social media can put adolescences into risk categories such as “peer-to-peer; inappropriate content” said by the organization of pediatric publications. There is so much inappropriate content online that it can scar the psychological process of adolescence in its developmental stages. Also during the early stages of adolescence, children have just acquired minimal skills to make a limited number of rational judgements; Therefore, that exposure to some of the inappropriate content online would perturb this process. Because of this emotional imbalance, Children experience emotional maturity differently than others; Actually, the emotional development of the brain during adolescence is manipulated and centered around these judgments. Furthermore, due to “lack of understanding of online privacy issues and outside influences of third party advertising groups” (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org) children in early adolescences are prone to being cyberbullied and harassed online. If children in early stages of adolescence do not have much experience about online predators then clearly they will be susceptible to harassment and online bullying which can have unspeakable
Digital and social media has both positively and negatively affected the children of this generation. In today’s digital age, kids of all ages can connect and interact with one another via online social platforms, including video games. This has enabled kids to improve their social skills, interact with their friends no matter the distance between them, and provided a platform for children to learn. However, with the good comes bad, and children these days, especially in the United States, are experiencing cyber bullying via digital and social media. Digital and social media is also affecting the health of children.
