Civility can be defined as showing respect, being polite, and sacrifice for strangers, not only for people we know. Stephen Carter introduces five tenants of civility: Our duty to be civil toward others does not depend on whether we like them or not; civility requires that we sacrifice for strangers, not just for people we happened to know; civility has two parts: generosity, even when it is costly, and trust, even when there is risk; civility requires that we listen to others with knowledge of the possibility that they are right and we are wrong; civility requires that we express ourselves in ways that demonstrate our respect for others. It was the week before a big sailing race in my high school against the Turkish Naval Academy. Academy …show more content…
In my high school upperclassmen don’t show respect to subordinates. They don’t listen to their ideas, and want them to do what they told, but I followed a different path as a detailer. I always asked their opinions about everything we did. We were like friends outside the company area, but we kept professionalism inside the company area. We had a great year together, and we achieved lots of things together, because I respected them and they respected me. They did what I told them to do without any question, because they knew that if I had the chance to ask their ideas, I would do. I gained more respect by showing respect to …show more content…
We were trying to play a decision making game, and we divided into groups, and started thinking about different scenarios. Everybody was trying to find the best way, but I felt like alienated from the group because of my speaking skill. I was afraid to speak even if I really liked my friends and I knew that they wanted me to talk. I observed everyone and they were arguing about the situation. The tension was high, and I decided to tell my idea which I thought it was a great idea. I did not want them to argue, because it wasn’t worth to argue for a game. I told them not to argue, and told my opinion. At first, they did not accept my opinion and opposed it. I knew their ideas and showed their ideas’ lack of strategy, and in the end they accepted my idea. We went out, and showed our strategy. Even if we did not win, we had a great strategy. I persuaded my classmates by examining the situation critically and showing examples. If I could go back I would have done the same thing to avoid argument and try to persuade them. I think leaders have a responsibility to ensure a climate of civility, because if no one has respect to each other, that institution or organization cannot execute its mission. If no one trusts each other, they don’t show honesty which leads a failure. A leader should create an environment that everyone works together and shows respect and trusts each other. By doing this, the institution
Northouse (2016) states that leaders have an ethical responsibility to serve others if they are to be successful in encouraging followers to implement the shared goals and vision.
Civility is manners. Doing simple behaviors like not chewing with one’s mouth open while eating or holding doors open for others can be considered as simple acts of civility. In the two essays “What is Civility?” by P.M. Forni and “Play with Your Food, Just Don’t Text” by Sara Rimer, they discuss civility. In Forni’s essay, he discusses civility from a teacher’s stand point, and Rimer focuses on technology and how it leads to a lack of civility in a lot of homes worldwide. Although they have two different stand points, they both focus on the similar aspect of civility being significant. Civility is important because it allows Americans to get along with each other by showing simple actions of courtesy, having manners, and being polite.
Through studying texts one can gain a greater understanding of how individuals can transition into more prosperous and positive phases of life as well into new and differing social contexts. This is explored in the texts The Simple Gift composed by Steven Herrick, as Billy transitions into a new life in the town of Bendarat and in Jasper Jones as Charlie develops new outlooks in his life and moves into social contexts he would have once perceived as taboo. Through the portrayal of transitions in these texts, the responder gains a wider perception how circumstances can create transitions into new phases of life and gain a greater understanding of contrasting social contexts.
* Respect. Respect each individual with the same respect as you would like to be respected.
Literature is arguably the most significant aspect taught in high school. It allows us to expand our minds to interpret human nature and its consequences. Several high school curriculums neglect the importance of improving the novels to better fit current generations, which consequently reduces its impact. A Complicated Kindness is a novel by Miriam Toews that should be implemented in the English curriculum, as it not only relates to high schoolers in today’s society, but is also deemed one of the best Canadian books through its personal touch and prominent themes that relate to other important novels.
Every group, team, or organization has a leader. That leader has to have certain qualities to be well respected and followed by his or her following. Not only does the leader have qualities and responsibilities to maintain but also the group’s members. Both the leader and individuals in the group must have respect, fear, and honesty among each other to be a productive group.
During my senior design project tenure at Texas A&M, I had the opportunity to work with a team of students that had strong personalities. I believe that I exhibited traits of mindfulness, respect and leadership during this period. Though my teammates were generally positive and kind-hearted, it was still surprising when certain individuals would take great pride in knowing a simple piece of information, all the while stepping over you to look good in front of a sponsor. Oftentimes a decent piece of advice on my end would be used by a teammate to uplift their own standing. True, it was a common occurrence of the practical world in life, but I realized that I did not have it in me to walk over others in order to obtain success. I learned to become more assertive, yet maintain my sense of integrity and give credit to others for their ideas and achievements. I believe a leader exhibits such qualities. While being aware of themselves, the leader is able to rise above and treat individuals with respect and not as a means to an end. Similarly, I believe it is important to respect people based on the content of what they say, rather than how smartly they say something.
An illustration of altruism was when Max put Freak on his shoulders. Numerous times in the book Freak the Mighty, Max puts Freak on his shoulders and they get-up-and-go on “adventures”. The two would fight bullies with Maxes size and Freaks non-floccinaucinihilipilification brain and reacquire abducted purses. Max was so adjoined with Freak, Freak salvaged Max's life. What happens was Max was kidnapped by Killer Kane and Mr.Kane was choking Loretta and Max started screaming “I saw you do it, I saw you kill her” and Mr.Kane gazed at Max like a reconnaissance. Then Freak came in with his water pistol and said it was acid and it will burn you. Killer Kane said “No that's a lie” but Freak squirted the acid in his eyes and Max and ran for it. So
In the story The Good Deed by Marion Dane Bauer, the main character Heather has successes and failures of kindness. Heather has to do a good deed for a sight-impaired woman named Miss Benson. She meets a girl named Risa, who lives across the hall from Miss Benson, whom Heather does not fancy right away. Heather then realizes that Risa has a difficult life, and struggles to take care of her family. In The Good Deed, Heather has built-in confusions, failures, and successful acts of kindness.
In an article titled “Bleep! The decline of civility” Kathleen Parker questioned whether or not our civility can be saved in today’s society. Rudeness happens every day and sometimes you may be the one being rude to another without even realizing it. There’s no reason to be rude to anyone, and said rudeness can be prevented. Rudeness is a lack of manners that has become more common in life today.
There are several definitions of respect. One is being deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment. The other relevant definition is the esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability. (Respect) The first definition discusses the military custom and courtesy of showing the proper respect to those of a greater rank or position then you. This is an integral function of the military. It allows those in a higher rank or position to give orders and directions which will be carried out without hesitation. However while this is a necessity for success it is not the only respect needed. If this is the only type of respect garnered it could create a hostile command climate. General John M. Schofield said, "The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country
Kongzi gives great advice when he talks about how we should treat others: “Our master obtains it through being courteous, refined, respectful, restrained, and deferential (Confucius, 1.10, 4). In this passage, Kongzi teaches his readers how to be respectful, courteous, refined, restrained, and deferential. These are important personal characteristics to have. According to Kongzi, if you are courteous, respectful, restrained, and deferential, society will value you very highly. The key words Kongzi points out are “courteous” and “respectful”.
I found a Dictionary definition for civility at Merriam- Webster stating civility means polite, reasonable, and respectful behavior. How I think of civility means the same as Merriam-Webster but it’s also much more than being polite, reasonable, and respectful behavior it’s understanding people’s feelings showing them respect and understanding listening to someone that’s having bad day just to be there for them. Some rules I live by are in our household we are say positive and nice things to each other if something negative come from someone adult or child we do have punishment. Another rule we live by is always using our manners yes mama no mama yes please thank you are all words we us daily. While eating at the kitchen table my family knows
There are many little things you can do to show respect. For example you can clean your room and set the dishes. You can raise your hand when some one else is talking when you have an opinion. Don’t be afraid to share your opinions and ideas. They can be a good example for someone. Be a person that another person would want to look up to. You can not be this person when you have a lack of respect.
Respect is an important value to be taught when growing up. Through the years I have learned that in order to learn anything you must have respect for others. I have learned many valuable lessons from listening to my grandmother. She has told me many of her experiences, which has made me a better person. Having respect for other people has allowed me to be more open-minded and see qualities in people that most would not. I have always listened to what my friends and family has to say. That doesn’t always mean that I agree with them, but it is their opinion, so I respect it. In return I receive respect from them. As people begin to respect me more their trust in me also grows.
