Imagine yourself inside a mother’s womb sleeping, eating, growing, listening to your surroundings and then all of a sudden, you this precious human being feels something that no one should ever go through, the pain of dying. This is called abortion it is “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” (google) Abortion has to be one of the most important things that I would love to stop. I am 100% pro-life and hope one day abortion can not just be banned but that people see the truth in the matter and how wrong it is.

Although neglect is the major reason that orphans are disadvantaged, stigmatisms only add to the difficulties. In most places around the world, orphans are seen only as troublemakers and hopeless members of society who are susceptible to manipulation. The monster is seen by everyone he crosses to be a dangerous and scary thing and thus no one is willing to help him or get to know him. If one single person had made the decision to go out of their way to help the monster, so many awful things could have been avoided. With the situation in many poor countries, orphans are avoided or abused in much the same way. People cross by them every day and never give a care for them. In the monster’s case, he runs away from all contact with the exception of Victor, but these kids do whatever they can to be accepted.

Historically, children were viewed very differently than they are today. Adults thought of children as being seen and not heard. Children were expected to work in textile factories or as chimney sweeps in order to provide for their families. They did not have rights and in the family, children followed the rule “do as you’re told” so they would survive. It was not until 1875 when the thought of the rights of children came about. Rights of children “stemmed from their status – dependent, immature individuals who require care, protection, and guidance to survive and flourish,” (Downs, Moore & McFadden, 2009, p. 7). Politicians thought children deserved an education and protection, so they introduced “child saving” activities that advocated for the improving the lives of and conditions for children. Since this was enacted orphanages were developed for communities that experienced disasters and orphan trains helped in resettling over 100,000 children. In 1924 the League of Nations approved the Geneva Declaration of of the Rights of a Child which gave children rights such as receiving food, healthcare, protection, and shelter (Strohm, Powerpoint, September 3).

And to further develop upon this point, it is statistically proven that many unwanted babies do not have great lives. Obviously if a parent wants to get rid of the child, the parent is not going to be loving and nurturing towards the child. This leads to a slew of new children, oftentimes who are abused, without proper households to be raised in, which consequently has a wide impact across society. It has been statistically proven that most criminals come from homes that are destructive/ non-existent. Also, take a look at the increasing number of foster homes and orphanages that are being built in order to accommodate the growing number of children that cannot or will not be cared for. There are approximately over 500,000 children residing in foster care in the U.S. alone; these children lack the support and care that a regular family would provide. If abortions were to become illegal, the number of homeless children would exponentially increase from the already staggering number of children.

The number of orphaned children is expected to rise to more and more as a direct result of the widespread HIV/AIDS epidemic. Other statistics show that more than 1.5 million orphans are living in the Eastern Europe, nearly 400,000 orphans living in Latin America, and more than 135,000 orphaned children enrolled within the U.S. foster care system. Besides the fact that abortion has killed millions of innocent children and can have some barbaric techniques, it has had adverse effects socially and globally. Abortion has led to a damaging impact on the family, including difficulties in mother-child bonding, and the devaluation of the child. When a child learns that his mother aborted a previous pregnancy, he comes to realize this could have just as easily been him. He begins to think that his mother may not have wanted him, leading to difficulties in mother and child bonding. There is a problem with overpopulation in the world and the abortion of unwanted children would help. Society as a whole could benefit from abortions in certain cases. I don’t think everyone who has an unplanned pregnancy should go out and get an abortion because if so many of the great minds of our generation would be but dirt in the ground. A teenage girl who gets pressured into an abortion because of all these statistics could suffer serious depression and issues and would never know if her unborn child could have been the next LeBron James or millionaire who reaches great success even though they suffered through hardships early in there life. A utilitarian view is just unrealistic and there is no way to see if it would benefit society or hurt it. Human potential is endless and people seem to succeed through many hardships daily we should not kill an innocent child because of statistics. You never know what could happen in the future if I have a child they could be the smartest person in the history of the world I would be against abortion if it were my own child. I think people should have a choice to do what they want and the government should not tell people what they can and cannot do with there bodies.
