Genocides have always been a part of the world’s history. Millions of people running for their lives, hundreds of poor, overpopulated refugee camps have littered the world. A genocide is defined as the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic, religious, and/or racial group. The holocaust has been one of the largest genocides to date. However, although, it’s the modern age, genocides are still present in the world. Most happen in 3rd world countries. One genocide that’s developing the fastest is in Myanmar. Genocides are classified by an eight stage process that explains the causes and identifying factors of a genocide. Both the Holocaust and Holodomor are prime examples of genocides, and although the eight stages of genocide are shown through both, they were implemented differently in some aspects. The Holodomor, a genocide in the 1930’s targeting Ukrainians, was similar to the Holocaust through the stages of classification, organization, polarization, and denial, but different in the ways of preparation, extermination, dehumanization, and symbolism.

The blood of thousands of murdered Tutsi people ran through the streets of Rwanda on April 7, 1994. Until mid-July of 1994, Hutu supremacists eradicated thousands of Tutsi. Nearly fifty years prior, Nazis claimed the lives of millions of Jews. Within the years that followed, the Nazi forces slaughtered millions of Jewish citizens across Europe. Both massacred by people they once considered friends and coworkers, Tutsi and Jews faced great injustice, but those are not the only similarities between the two genocides. The book Divergent is similar to the Holocaust in many ways. The need for a utopian society is displayed in both, resulting in lots of tragedy, and unexpected occurrences. Divergent portrays the idea of a utopian society very well, through factions. The factions are five groups in the society, in which each values a specific virtue. Amity values peace, Erudite values knowledge, Candon values honesty, Dauntless values bravery, and Abnegation values selflessness. Children and families are born into one of these factions, and at the age of 16 have the decision to switch their faction or remain in the same one. If you fail initiation, you will not be accepted and be considered “factionless”, which is similar to being Jewish in the Holocaust. Those who are factionless are forced to remain on the dangerous outskirts of the city, and eventually end up dying. In the Holocaust, butler wants his utopia to be made up of people with “blonde hair and blue eyes”. Genocide has existed for thousands of years, and while there are many examples of these horrific events, some of the most well known are the holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda 1994. The United States’ responses to these killings as well as the way in which they ended were similar, but the driving force behind each differed.
The Holocaust was a mass murder of millions of individuals’ primary to and during World War II. “Only 54 percent of the people surveyed by the Anti- Defamation League (ADL) in a massive, global poll has ever heard of the Holocaust” (Wiener-Bronner). The Holocaust was from 1933-1945 and was run by German leader named Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a man who wanted to create his own race of people. Therefore to create this race, he wiped out anyone who did not have the specific descriptions that he wanted. For people to fit into his race, they had to have blue eyes and blond hair. This excluded the Jews and from then on Hitler slowly dehumanized them. In the concentration camp the first thing they had to pass was the selection test. The selection test was what the SS man (German soldiers) used to determine who was fit for work. Usually children, mothers, and elders were the first to die because they were not mentally fit for the work they were going to be given. People who passed the selection process either died of starvation, disease, fatigue, or assassination. It took twelve years before anyone intervened and by then it was too late for millions of people. Even though over twelve million people died during the Holocaust, genocides have still happened in Rwanda, Darfur and Cambodia.
The Holocaust was a repulsive time where many Jews suffered miserably from Hitler’s concentration camps and millions died. I researched this topic because I had learned about the Holocaust a little bit over the years, but I wanted to focus primarily on the United States and if Roosevelt helped the Jews who were suffering or if he only focused on the needs of his own country. Before I started my research, I knew a basic amount of information about the Holocaust itself and what Hitler had done to the Jews, but I knew nothing about what effect FDR had on the prosecution of Jews. I chose this topic mainly because I found it interesting to learn about and I knew I would enjoy reading about the Holocaust but another reason why I chose to research this topic is because I am Jewish. My great grandma had experienced the great depression and had lived during that heartbreaking time period. I wanted to learn more about my history and what it was like to be a Jew back in the 1930-1940’s. It is hard to imagine the hatred some people had for Jews and how awful they treated them. Learning about the Holocaust made me thankful for what I have because millions of survivors were scarred for the rest of their lives and experiencing the pain and torture European Jews underwent is unimaginable. Living in America, I wanted to know if we had helped. I wanted to know if our country cared about what was happening in Germany and if they put in a lot of effort to stop Hitler from his horrible actions.

A genocide is a one-sided massacre from one party toward an ethnic or different group of people. As genocides occurred, questions such as “Why do people kill?” and “How can people allow these atrocities to occur?” are asked. There have been many theories made up as people researched the reason behind genocides. Throughout different centuries in history, genocides such as the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, and the Asian genocide, have occurred because of the negative psychological effects on the people caused by propaganda, corrupted leaders, and differences in ethnic groups.
The Holocaust was a system established by the Nazis in World War II as a means to exterminate all of the people which they considered undesirable or subhuman. This included gypsies,minorities,cripples, the mentally ill, homosexuals,communists,and anyone who opposed the Nazi regime. The main target of the Holocaust was however the Jewish people. They were the main target because the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, believed that they were the reason for Germany losing World War 1 and thus was the reason that the German economy was in a bad state. Vladek Spiegelman and Elie Weisel were to people who were both survived their experiences in the Holocaust and both told their story in books. These books are Night by Elie Wiesel and Maus by Vladek Spiegelman.The Holocaust shaped these two different men's lives in the same way. Through their losses and experiences in this horrific point in time they learned what it meant to truly struggle and this ultimately turned them into better people.
What is a genocide? A genocide is when one ethnic, racial, or religious group tries to destroy and eliminate another. This extermination is usually done through cruel and brutal methods. It is our responsibility to learn about the genocides to help prevent them from occurring in the future. Genocides have been occurring for centuries and, unfortunately, still take place today. We are going to focus on two particular genocides: the Jewish genocide (more commonly know as the Holocaust) and the Armenian genocide.
Genocide is one of the evillest moral crimes any ruling authority such as a government can commit against its people and it happens more than we think. A general definition of Genocide is the intention to destroy or murder people because of their race, beliefs, or even political and economic status. As we have been taught in this course Raphael Lemkin, created the term ‘Genocide’ 1944. Lemkin combined the ancient Greek word ‘genos’ which means race and the Latin word ‘cide’ which translates to killing. There are many examples of genocide in the world but the most recognizable is that of the Holocaust and how the German powers that be sought and attempted to kill all Jews. A recent example is the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 where the assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana caused a violent reaction resulting in mass killings. In efforts to reduce Genocide, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (UNCG) was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and was placed in force in 1951. On July 1, 2002 the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into force. The ICC not only accepted the UNCG’s definition of Genocide but expanded it to include crimes against humanity such as enslavement, deportation, torture, rape, enforced disappearance and apartheid. There is no doubt that the Holocaust is the most famous and most studied case of genocide, although there have been numerous throughout history.
