Before starting this course, I had a preconceived notion that I would learn about geographical features and memorize places all around the world. I did not expect to learn about topics such as globalization, political geography, or industries and services. I was surprised at what all we learned in such a short period of time. I gained a new prospective and information about the world around me. Throughout the semester, my understanding and knowledge about geography has drastically changed from before this course. This course has made me think about topics and things that I have never reflected upon. I have had this standard premonition of geography as just places or maps, but there is so much more. I enjoyed learning about the different races, history of gender equality, and religions of the world the most. Geography has influenced my political, social, and economic views of the world. One of the topics in this course, geographies of languages, was one that interested me in learning more. One of the reasons that it interested me was because I am a Spanish major and I love learning new languages and cultures of the world. Languages are one of the most complex, yet interesting social aspects of life. Without languages, we would have no way to communicate, therefore we would not be a social society whatsoever. There were multiple facts about the languages of the world I did not know about. One of them were the types of languages: body language, tactile/touch language,
The Five Themes of Geography are: Location – Absolute points on a map or grid or Relative to where something may be; Place – The physical and/or human characteristics of a locations; Human/Environment Interactions – How humans have impacted the landscape or environment; Relationship between places Movement – How humans interact on the earth (i.e. how they communicate over distance (short or long)) and Regions – a unit of space that has commonalities defined by physical, human and environmental geography. The Explorers of the New World may have not known what the Five Themes of Geography were but they quickly learned. Of the five themes the ones that they all took advantage of was the physical Location and Place as they learned to navigate
Geography will never mean the same to me, the more I read the more I’ve learned it’ so much more than land and boundaries. What I’ve learned from this literature it seems to be the study of issues that affect people and the environment, and ways to solve the world’s problems. Geography is important because it affects all aspects of life. No matter what you are talking or thinking about geography is somehow involved. Everything in the world has a direct connection to place, location, interaction, movement, and region.
Cronulla is a beachside suburb in southern Sydney, it is located 34.0574° S, 151.1522° E which is 26 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD (see figure 2). It is governed by the Sutherland Shire Council. Cronulla’s coastal environment is on the Kurnell Peninsula, which is made up of a tombolo. A tombolo is a sand spit connecting a rocky outcrop or island to the mainland. So this forms a barrier between Botany Bay and Bate Bay. The two areas of study visited were Wanda Beach and the Greenhills Beach development.
C.A country likely constitutes a formal political region because within its boundaries certain conditions of nationality, law, and political tradition prevail.
After participating in the Google Slide Presentation, What is Geography? and watching the video clip, reflect on the following questions and images.
As time passes by, with everything seeming in place, we push aside real life. Activities we like to pretend are not occurring are put on the bottom of the list. War, deadly tsunamis, earthquakes, terrorism, economic crisis, all real life changes which have occurred and are occurring now. People are becoming less knowledgeable than ever when it comes to geography. “Given the accelerating pace of change on our increasingly crowded planet, this may not be surprising- even if it is disturbing,” states Harm de Blij in his book “Why Geography Matters: More Than Ever.” While De Blij tells us how illiterate we have become to geography, he also explains to readers how American people could benefit from the knowledge of Geography in specific situations.
A topic that I studied at GCSE and AS Level was population. The study of population and the impacts of our ever-changing world demographics links neatly to the best adventure of my life - visiting China. Studying China's One Child Policy including the geopolitical effects of the Policy allowed me to recognise how people adapt to problems and how society shapes our world. Although, another topic that I have particularly enjoyed throughout my studies is Plate Tectonics due to frequent and recent events relating to this topic, for example the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan which devastated this rich and wealthy nation. Geographical events, such as natural disasters dominate the news and prove that Geography enhances understanding of the
Over the course of the centuries maps have been used to find locations all over the world. They have evolved and to become more advanced, thanks to technology. Of course, there are specific ways to use a map such as basic components. Basic components include a compass rose which indicates the cardinal directions. Legends is the key where symbols are used to help find a point on the map, or in other words, lead the way. A scale can range from as far as a continent to as close as a house. All these components are important while using a map.
Geography is an important factor to consider when you look at this worlds past, present, or future. So whether it be the earths physical geographic features, the geopolitics stirring up trouble across the globe, or the economics of growing or shrinking countries; geography plays a major role. In todays society, geographic knowledge is one of the most important and valuable tools to possess. Without it, we are victims of ignorance and endanger ourselves, others, and the world. This ignorance, possessed by many, is posing a great risk of self-destruction. The author of “Why Geography Matters More Than Ever”, Harm de Blij, makes many strong points on this matter, but occasionally makes unsupported and unclear statements which tend to stray off topic.
A psammosere is a serial community; an ecological succession that began life on newly exposed coastal sand. Most common psammoseres are sand dune systems.
Include if there are industries that your community is involved in that require those physical feature (for example, plains because you are using wind to power your entire community)
- One of the few countries in the world that combines a two-party system with a presidential form of government. Most former British colonies with single-member districts and strict two-party system have a parliamentary form of government.
Much of my passion for Geography is derived from the fact that it depicts relevance to all aspects of society. It is dynamic in a sense that my perception and understanding is constantly evolving with the growth in understanding and perception. What intrigues my further pursuit of geography is how Geography unlike other subjects has direct links to both human and physical attributes. By further pursuing geography at a higher education level, I wish to enrich my understanding of the wider significance of issues being faced and how it affects society on a local and global level. It is important to identify and understand the interconnecting aspects of the world around us and apply such knowledge towards a more sustainable future. Geography
Maybe some people will think human geography has no relation between physical geography. But I think human geography has a great effect on physical geography, and physical geography has a great effect on human geography too.
First, the language variety that you speak as a native language is closely tied to the geographical identity. Because body language is also a part of language, which helps other people in the society identify an individual from others. To maintain respectful social standards in the society, a person is responsible in developing a self-identity that is unique from the others. Language is a key for everyone, a key that would aid in conforming to new society and new people. Without language, culture would not exist. “We pass ideas, knowledge, and even attitude on to the next generation” using language. Without the ability to communicate, knowledge from one
