Orwell wrote this essay before he became famous for his cautionary tales, so he writes unbiasedly about the haggardness of the English language. Even though he only uses English works of literature as examples, his view on the dilapidation of language and thoughts, can be universally applied, if people agree with Orwell's warnings. Contrary to what others might think, careless language will lead to careless thinking because creating a thought depends on language and most people do not realize mechanical errors, due to that fact that they might be subtle or just very common. They declare that if a professor talks to their mother, they should talk to her in a way that she can understand. I firmly disagree. Orwell makes it clear that he would agree with me, if he was still alive, "A bad usage can spread by tradition and imitation even among people who should and do know better" (Orwell 537). The mother will accept that her vocabulary and tendencies, regarding literacy, are admissible. She will use that language with her loved ones and the cycle will continue. Just because it works now, a pharmacist should not sell a weak medicine while there is an amazing bottle of medicine in the back. That professor should have known better and used stronger terminology and their knowledge of linguistics. They could have taught their mother new mannerisms in the study of language.
