One of the worst Presidents in American History was George W. Bush. He is a war criminal, he has enacted war onto a country who did not attack, or declare war on us. From the Geneva Convention, and I quote from the Cornell University Law School page on the Geneva Conventions, (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/geneva_conventions )“Convention I: This Convention protects wounded and infirm soldiers and medical personnel against attack, execution without judgment, torture, and assaults upon personal dignity (Article 3). It also grants them the right to proper medical treatment and care.” He did not follow these rules, he broke them. Using torture on the captured. There is story about what some people did to a POW. They doused him in cold water,
Geneva Convention Articles are expounded on in FM 2-22.3, which was a change from the previous version, FM 34-52, where some of the applicable articles were just introduced. FM 2-22.3 has included an appendix covering all the articles of the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions. Although, these references can be found in numerous publications, by inserting them in the manual the authors reemphasize the importance of compliance with the Geneva Conventions and also reinforce the prohibition of torture, something that was not covered in FM 34-52.
James Buchanan was the fifteenth president of the United States and debateably the worst. Buchanan was said to have seemingly proficient ideas with poor results; although he was reportedly an intelligent and kind-hearted man, his actions in office were those of an un-educated kook.
The United States has had many admirable presidents, and also many other presidents that haven’t been very popular. Most people are aware of the famous presidents like: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, and the list goes on. On the other hand, there is also many presidents who are infamous, such as: Richard Nixon, Ulysses S. Grant, and probably the first “worst” president, John Tyler. In my opinion, John Tyler’s term in office was by far a failure because of his unpopularity, poor decision making, and failure to make any major impact as president.
The Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution says, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” The fundamental idea of torture is to inflict mental or physical pain onto a suspect to coerce them into revealing information we desire. This tactic is illegal because it violates the Constitution, and in addition, it violates international agreements that our nation has committed itself to. The general provisions of the Geneva Conference of 1949 prevent the use of torture in warfare; the document specifically outlaws “Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating or degrading treatment…” By violating these laws, particularly the Constitution, our nation
The Geneva Convention is an international agreement that provides a set of regulations that apply only in times of armed conflict (war) in hope of protecting people who are not or are no longer participating in the violence, this applied to the wounded, sick, shipwrecked, prisoners of war, and civilians. Punishments at the camps included withdrawal of food, forcing the sick and injured soldiers to work, locking prisoners in a bamboo box in the sun, beatings and executions. If anyone tried to escape from the camps and they were captured again, they were killed. At camps in Indonesia (Ambon) and Papua New Guinea (Rabaul) conditions were so appalling and intense that over half of the prisoners of war died, many in tragic accidents. For example, in 1942, when 1053 Australian prisoners of war were being transported from Papua New Guinea to the Japan occupied China, the ship was sunk by an American submarine that didn’t know the ship was carrying Australian prisoners of war, they were all killed.
There no doubt about it Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, was one of the worst Presidents to serve the U.S.. Jackson deserves to be impeached for his quick and horrible decisions of creating the Indian Removal Act, being called the “Common Man”, and for the removal of the National Bank that caused an economic depression in the U.S..
1. In our discussion of representation in the United States, we discussed the various amendments to the U.S. Constitution that increased citizen representation. Name three amendments to the U.S. Constitution that increased citizen representation in our government, and explain specifically, how each either expanded our electorate or made the government more representatives of its citizens.
Presidents Great and Bad Americas great Presidents include Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt and why their place in History, as well they earned the title. Washington self sacrifice for his nation in war and the politic arena, resulting, in a strong nation. The president is giving his life for the nation, as well as fighting in uniting a nation; President Lincoln in fighting the civil war brought a nation under one flag. Roosevelt fought for the average man by instituting social Security, welfare and public works projects, as well as fighting two wars at one time.
I’m doing this essay on which of the presidents we think are either the best or the worst. Some of the presidents that we think are the best are Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, John F. Kennedy, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan. While some of the presidents I think are the worst are George W. Bush, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, William Henry Harrison, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Warren G Harding, James Buchanan. (Great introduction!) (Provide more of a preview for a few of these presidents to get the reader interested.)
“Torture and abusive interrogation tactics are illegal under both U.S. law and international law. Torture is prohibited under federal law, as are lesser forms of detainee abuse such as cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.” (Human Rights First)
Throughout the years we have had some great United States presidents and some terrible ones. When we elect a president, we want someone who will improve our country and stabilize our economy. However, many presidents do not accomplish this during their term and end up causing the opposite effect to happen. One president who is on the list of presidents that made the country worse and our economy decline is George W. Bush. He was the United States president from 2001 to 2009. George W. Bush was one of the worst United States presidents for many reasons, but the top three on my long list are first and foremost his decision to start the war on Iraq, second his support of the Military Commissions Act, and last but not least his handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. Although, some may fight the argument by saying that even though Trump is not necessarily taking the rights from the people himself, he is doing it through others, it still does involve Trumps actions as President. People are influenced by others every single day. If someone is influenced by what trump said, they have the right to be influenced and therefore start a peaceful protest just like the NFL players are. Robert Post says “Trumps allies have already begun boycotts … to give teeth to the president.” No matter what anyone else does, it does not equal to Trump suppressing citizens rights. Post continues into this by saying “Still to this date, we have no evidence to indicate that Trump has done anything more than verbally attack the
After learning and analysing each presidency, I believe that William Henry Harrison had one of the worst presidencies. The reason I say this about is Harrison because he obviously got nothing done during his presidency, of course since he had the shortest presidency. Harrison was only in office for thirty two days before dying from basically giving the longest inauguration speech and then got a cold. Harrison’s dying like anyone dying was not ideal because after his death, John Tyler who was his vice president was sworn in as president who was not exactly who we voted for. The people wanted Harrison, but got someone else before Harrison could do anything. And in all honesty another reason that I consider him one of the worst presidents is him giving the longest inauguration speech in the cold, risking his health was not necessary I know he wanted to show his strength to the people, but he should have found a different way like maybe by doing his job he should have also taken better care of his
In 1949, the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War was created to prohibit immoral, cruel and degrading punishment toward prisoners during wartime. The United States ratified this covenant and became a member of the Geneva Conventions. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, a series of human abuses occurred from October through December of 2003 where American military personnel have conducted acts of brutality and immoral behavior toward Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison. The inhumane “interrogation method” of the American military have clearly violated Article 2 and 4 of the Geneva Conventions. Article 2.2 states “No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state
