Whenever any American hears the name George Washington, they immediately connect the name to heroic qualities. Washington was one of America 's founding fathers that served as a general in the American Revolution and the first President of America. His leadership qualities in the revolution made him a no brainer choice by the delegates to be elected as first president. What made Washington such a great leader? What qualities made him into the leader he was? And finally, what precedents did Washington set for future presidents to come? From my research, I will share with you what I have learnt as to why and what made George Washington the figure many look up to today for guidance.

Washington even used to read Thomas Paine’s The Crisis to his troops during times of hardship during the war to remind them of what they were fighting for. Quotes like, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph ” would resonate with the troops and compel them to fight hard. Throughout the war, Washington and his troops fought valiantly to secure Northeastern cities, such as Boston and New York. Washington continued to lead his troops until the end of the war and was a crucial factor in the American victory over the British . Without George Washington, America might not have ever won the war.
Washington’s long-term impact on America only grew after the Revolution. After the failure of the Articles of Confederation, Washington was pursued by James Madison to attend the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Some of America’s greatest politicians gathered together to discuss the future of their country. Washington understood that the Articles of Confederation was doomed to fail, because of the weak centralized government. Although he did not participate much in the creation of the Constitution or collaborate on the content of the Constitution, many desired for him to be the first president of the new government . He had to set up the Judiciary Branch, deal with uprisings and conflicts between the natives and the western settlers, and try to keep together a nation that was falling apart. He created a group of advisors (the cabinet) to help him with certain issues. He had a few things on his mind at the time such as: stay out of a war, build up revenue to pay off Revolutionary War debt, and try to make peace with England.

With John Adams at his side, George Washington started the country on its way to become the great and wonderful country that we call home today. George Washington is perhaps the single president who can truly call himself a “founding father” of the United States of America. Many people would’ve have looked at the situation and thought that it wasn’t their place to correct a whole country, or much less to lead the country to greatness. It takes great courage to lead an entire country, without anyone to look back on for experience advice or mistakes that have been made. I, myself, couldn’t or wouldn’t have even thought about doing that, I would’ve let someone like George Washington step up to the plate.
