Ghost of Spirit Bear, written by Ben Mikaelsen, is a touching story of overcoming violence and making a change in the world you live in. “‘You have a better idea?’ Cole had to admit that he didn’t,” (Mikaelsen, 40). Every story has a theme, a concept, a point!- and that point is making a change instead of standing by in this story. Peter and Cole come back from the time on the island, calm and collected, but city life hits them like a brick. The only thing they can think of is the island, and how they wish it was more like it. Instead of standing by and evading the mess they came back into, they want to fix it. Just how much of a mess could it possibly be? “‘This week, we had a suicide, an assault on a student, and major vandalism,’”
In Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, Cole Matthews, the protagonist, is a troublemaker. He always has been. But, when he smashes Peter Driscal’s head into the concrete sidewalk, he ends up having to make a decision; prison time, or a year on a remote Alaskan island. But, that’s not the only crime he has done. This leads to me seeing him as a sociopath. Sociopaths tend to lie, break laws, act impulsively, and lack regard to the safety of themselves and others, all of which, he does.

I believe a good reader is what makes a good writer. But because I lost my interest in reading, I’ve struggled with writing throughout the years. It wasn’t that I had trouble learning new skills but because I was pushed away from what I wanted to learn, so I decided to pursue other interests. Despite being eager to learn, my writing suffered due to my lack of interest in reading, however my skills in writing have increased as my drive to read has rekindled.

As Thomas F. Crum once said, “Embracing conflict can become a joy when we know that irritation and frustration can lead to growth and fascination.” In Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen and The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, there are some characters that are involved in a big conflict, and end up learning something from it in the end. In Touching Spirit Bear, Cole Matthews is a juvenile delinquent who has a parent that beats him up, and another that does nothing. Cole is sent away to an island for beating up, and almost killing, a kid named Peter Driscal, where he has to learn to survive with limited supplies, and later Peter has to come to the island to heal with Cole, and after an argument, Cole gives Peter his special blanket
Touching Spirit Bear is a prodigious book that teaches you a lot of lessons while also giving you the enjoyment that any good book gives you while you read it. This book starts off with a juvenile delinquent by the name of Cole Matthews. In the book, Cole smashes the skull of another kid named Peter Driscoll against a sidewalk and is about to go to trial when two guys at his detention center, Garvey and Edwin, get him interested in a Native American system of healing called Circle Justice.

The book I picked was Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. It starts in Minneapolis, when the main character, fifteen-year-old Cole Matthews, beats up a boy named Peter Driscal for telling on Cole for robbing a hardware store. He is sentenced to participate in a Native American style law group called Circle Justice, as an alternative to a trial in court as an adult for his crime. Cole half-heartedly states that he is sorry for hurting Peter (Peter and his family are in the same room), and so they sentence him to live on a wooded and unpopulated island in southeast Alaska for one year. The main characters are Cole Matthews, Spirit Bear, Peter Driscal, Garvey, Edwin, and Cindy and William Matthews.
When Cole Mathews was sent to the remote Alaskan island he viewed it as a game, but it isn’t. Upon arrival Cole started off by burning down his shelter by using the white gas for his lantern and a match, which doesn’t serve him well in the long run. He has also encountered the Spirit Bear many times in the first few days and he even created weapons to try to kill it. After trying to throw a homemade spear at the Spirit Bear from point blank a lopsided match occurs between Cole and the suddenly ferocious bear. The Spirit Bear beats Cole to the edge of death and leaves Cole desperate to survive on the ground. Cole fights to survive by scrounging up anything he can find to eat, he starts by eating worms from the wet soil and slowly progresses.
In Ben Mikaelsen’s Touching Spirit Bear, Cole Matthews is a troubled adolescent who often acts out with aggressive behavior. Cole begins the novel as a very violent teenager, however, near the end he grasp how to deal with his anger. In the first chapter of the book, cole struggles with dealing with his emotions in a healthy way. Instead of working issues out he responds murderously towards Peter. Later in the novel, he is still furious, but he is beginning to alter how he acts. Finally in the end he has transformed from being enraged all the time, to responding to the world around him, in a positive peaceful manner.
