I am Marshall Barrett, an American in Japan during 1853. You are probably wondering how I got here. Well it was the early 1853 and I, Marshall Barrett age 26 was going with Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan. Before I came to Japan, I was living in connecticut close to the east coast. I was asked to come on the voyage because I am a sailor. I was very excited to to interact with Japan. I feel admired there much “simpler” lifestyle than people in America. I was a little annoyed when I had heard that America are now going out and making deals by force. Being a sailor, I have been to many different places, and through that I can say that I feel connected to people because although we look different, talk different, and act different, we are still
The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. Alex Scott did not have a regular education in the U.S. This was mainly because of her cancer. She had to miss multiple days of school because of doctor appointments, germs, or for some other reason that was not given. For her, germs were very serious. If one person got sick, it wouldn’t be that bad for anybody else in her class, but for her it would be very serious. She still loved to go to school and learn, but she barely got to go. Her school, Penn Wynne Elementary School in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania was very nice and sent a teacher to the hospital or her house a couple days a week. Alex was able to catch up even though she didn’t have five days a school, eight hours a week. Four years after Alex was diagnosed, she went to preschool. She
October 30, 1997. I was born on a Thursday morning; the day before Halloween. Aside from the fact that it is the day before a festive holiday, I want to know who else shares a memory with me on October 30th. I have grown up to believe on my birthday, the world revolves around me, but at this moment I’m going to stop and look at the bigger picture. The events, music, and people are my main focus rather than my birthday. I’m going to expand my learning to not only a specific year, but a specific day.
Frank McCourt had a troublesome upbringing. He had to deal with poverty for a long time, which caused a lot of problems. During his childhood, he had to face many deaths. He had to cope with an alcoholic father who would always spend his wages at the bar. His life was generally very different from mine. Despite how dissimilar our lives are, there is still some resemblance between them. Frank's life is very different but also alike to my own life.
