Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society? Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, “Community Service” written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the world through peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article, Coles states that, “students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest ways.”(Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught.
Until a few years ago, a lady who was known to collect cats would have been called “the crazy cat lady.” Houses that were filled with endless amounts of stuff were referred to as “cluttered, filthy, or a pen sty.” As of today, those expressions have been replaced with the coined terms: “hoarder or compulsive hoarding.” What is hoarding? “Compulsive hoarding is a specific type of behavior marked by acquiring and failing to throw out a large number of items that would appear to have little or no value to others, severe cluttering of the person's home so that it is no longer able to function as a
Nine years ago, my parents dropped me off at overnight camp for the first time ever. Wow, nine years ago… that’s just hard to think about. Anyways, I do not remember much about that first summer, but it must have been fun because I came back the next summer, then again, and again, and again, and again, and, while, you get the point. I really liked it there. Back then, I would not have been able to explain what I loved about camp so much. I would have said something like “my great friends” or “all the sports we play,” but now I understand it means so much more than that. If I was to explain all the memories I made on that hillside throughout my seven year career as a camper, this essay would be well over 650 words, so I will refrain from doing so. Instead, I will talk about my transition from camper to counselor and how it helped me realize the importance of giving back.
There are many opportunities to give back to people every day. It could be the time you give someone or something they need to sustain them, and keep them going. The fundamentals of giving back are often seen through charity work or even so much as donating a few items of clothing. I, however, decided to devote my time to feeding the homeless through the Salvation Army.
In the words of the famed civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Those who spend their time making a difference in the lives of people around them tend to know exactly what their calling in life is. Gandhi wrote the truth, and it is not difficult to see in everyday life. Giving back to others is a common theme among scouting organizations, educators, and even books and movies, displaying exactly how much a person can find themselves in the service of others. Two of the most well known organizations for giving back to others is Girl and Boy scouts. Scouts are famous for doing helpful things for other people. The Gold Award and Eagle Award, respectively the highest awards in girl and boy scouting, are centered around
I have participated in many activities that served to help others such as, taking my time to help at the Adult’s Day Care, help with anything that is needed at the nursing home, and on the weekends I would volunteer at the Youth Basketball Summer League by working at the concession stand, collecting ticket money, work for the scoreboard, and coach for my team. I also believe it is better to give than to receive. I donate money and toys to the St. Jude Children Research Hospital as well as giving to the Wounded Warriors. In addition to giving to the Wounded Warriors, my father and I participated in the cook off in honor of the warriors that have fought for our
I think that part of the idea of giving to the community is to inspire others that came from another place that moved to their town. I believe that because, in a small town like Honokaa, the community is everything to show for in our city that has no unique features. We have a small community, but that can also a great thing I remember that many people would come to offer volunteer work to help others. Like the work with did with the forest next to the park we pulled to king grass, and when people came to help make a new teachers lounge for the school, I donate the clothes that I can fit the salvation army in our town. The idea of giving back to our community is an idea that my parents raised me with, it is an idea that made me think about different people than myself. It made me not be selfish in what I do and buy like if I buy something that my family also play with it and if its clothes I would give it the salvation army that located in our time. When I was around 6 I was more selfish and always want to get something when we come to a store, I would rarely share anything with my sisters or cousins, but when I grew up, I became more influenced by the idea to give back to people or the
"Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to someone else - our time, our love, our resources. I have always found more joy in giving when I did not expect anything in return." --- S. Truett Cathy, Chic-Fil-A founder
Anne Frank once said, “no one has ever become poor by giving.” “Giving” incorporates so many things: giving money, giving food, giving clothes, giving gifts, etc. Personally, I see time as the most significant thing one can give to others. Volunteering is, at its core, giving your time to help others. Volunteering has always been a big part of my life; at a younger age I would help the ladies in the cafeteria serve lunch after Sunday school and clean up the main hall afterwards, in high school I was in organizations that presented me with ample opportunities to volunteer, and presently I still manage to volunteer every semester in college.

Waking up in the morning can be tough, especially when it’s at 5:50AM to go to the gym. The gym is a place where no one can judge people. It’s an area where people keep to themselves and work through the thoughts of giving up and not finishing. When we’re at the gym, our jobs, or school everyone shares a common goal, to push our bodies to the absolute most it can go without giving up.
I know I have faced many difficulties with turning in work whether that be on time or even late work and with keeping up a good academic appearance however these difficulties have pushed me to put the best effort into future tasks, going above and beyond, so I can excel better than I have ever
On Trevor McKinney’s first day of his seventh grade year his social studies teacher, Eugene Simonet, assigned the whole class an assignment that would be something they would try to do during the whole year. The assignment was, “Think of an idea to change our World — and put it into action.” After being assigned the assignment Trevor knew what to do. He then came up with “pay-it-forwardism.” This is when one does a selfless act for three people, and then those people do the same for three more people and so on and so forth.
To me the meaning of “giving back to the community” means to help and take care of the community and volunteer to help plant a tree or paint a fence. It's just time out of your day that you set apart to not be selfish and help the community that gives you your home and plant a little flower that can help a bee produce honey. In our day and age it’s more common to see selfish people who rather see the local economy suffer then get their hands dirty. But i think giving back to the community is fun because it's time you can bond with your friends or family. Doing community work is also so great for you to experience how helping others can make such a great difference. Last year my mom and i got up at 7 in the morning to go pick up trash around
The thought of moving from their parents’ home has been the dream of every 18 year old at least once. When I was 18, I moved out to make my dreams a reality. It taught me to grow up and become more financially responsible. Other responsibilities that also come with moving out are making sure your bills are paid and making sure you have food on your table. I was also able to see what it was like to be on my own first hand. Since I have moved out, I have experienced a lot mentally, financially, and personally. Growing up was probably one of the biggest things I experienced. Growing up included cutting back on a lot of partying, spending money on unnecessary items, and going out every single night. When I moved out, it is as if none of that stuff even mattered anymore. Living alone, I felt like every day was a party. I enjoyed having no one telling me what to do or when to do it. I could come and go as I pleased, and I didn’t owe anyone an explanation. It taught me how to become more frugal, and how to save money. It also taught me how to do more adult things such as grocery shopping, paying bills, and fixing things around my house. Growing up is fun, sometimes scary, and maybe even a little bit frustrating. It makes you feel good knowing that you have a place of your own, and that you can handle such a big
