Global warming is caused by an effect called the greenhouse effect. Gases like Nitrous Oxide, Water Vapour, Carbon Dioxide, and Methane are released into the atmosphere by human industries and are forming a blanket around the earth. When sunlight enters the atmosphere it passes through the atmosphere as ultraviolet and visible light. (Ultraviolet meaning of electromagnetic radiation, having a wavelength shorter than that of the violet end of the visible spectrum but longer than that of X-rays - a type of electromagnetic rays which are used for medical purposes). It emits shorter wavelengths because the sun has a lot of energy and heat to give off and hotter energy has shorter wavelengths. Some of this energy is then reflected back towards space as infrared energy. Industries emit dangerous gases from burning fossils fuels, gasoline hence producing carbon dioxide which depletes the Ozone layer which is purposely meant to shield the earth from direct sunshine. Scientists say that unless something changes, the average U.S. temperature could increase by 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century. One thing most agree on is that the temperature of Earth is rising at a rapid pace and that global warming has been caused mostly by human activity.
