Global Warming
We should all be very concerned about our future on Earth as human beings. We may not be at such an immediate risk of burning to death, but our future descendants are. Every year, the overall temperature has gone up slowly. Eventually Earth will be too hot to live on, and the human race will become extinct! The best way to save our future is to start now. Americans should be conscientious of global warming and should watch their CO2 emissions because increasing CO2 concentrations means an increase in Earth’s temperature.
Being conscientious of global warming means making smart decisions on fossil fuel burning. As we all know fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource that produces CO2, which is detrimental to

If we don’t have to drive, we shouldn’t! Taking a bicycle to work does not harm the environment, and also it can be a good form of exercise. In Alan Durning’s essay, he argues that free parking is “ a major cause of the nation’s unquenchable thirst for gasoline and automobile use” (330). With excessive parking available in cities and around town, we seem to feel that we have almost nothing to gain by leaving our cars at home (331). An interesting statistic Durning notes is that if millions of workers across the country left their cars at home and paid at least an extra $2500 for parking at work, this would save 2.5 million barrels of oil a day (332). Decreasing the number of free parking available would obviously decrease the number of automobile commuters. The land used for parking could be used for other more important structures. “And, as drivers begin to face the full environmental and social costs of their decisions, auto use would decrease” (331) which will result in less fossil fuel burning.
We Americans need more advertising about global warming around the cities and communities. Youngsters need to be educated about the matter because they are the future. They need to be aware of the dangers of the future. Bjorn Lomborg wrote in his essay that global warming is “not anywhere the most important problem in the world” (329). There are by far much more important matters that need to be
The article I chose this week is by Ester Fung and gives light to a lifestyle I hope to never find myself…living in a big city without a car. Housing developers in big cities such as New York, San Francisco, and San Diego are opting to build apartment complexes and condos without the option of parking spaces for residences. One developer claims, “It’s the future…there is a strong demand for people who want to buy or rent units that are efficient”, while “local authorities seek to encourage the use of mass transit and free up space for parks, housing and other uses” (Fung, 2016). Parking decks and garages cost big bucks, and in cities where space is limited those decks have to be built underground, driving prices up and onto the consumer.
On average, an American commuter spends around 30 hours per week sitting in traffic going to and from the job that they may or may not love. Commuters in some cities like Washington DC, that is both near and dear to our hearts, can spend roughly 60 hours per week stuck in traffic. Not only is time wasted wasted while commuting, but the gas that we constantly fill our cars up with may as well be flushed down the drain. Following the gas that is going down this metaphorical drain here, is a ridiculous amount of money from an innocent commuter’s wallet. Additionally, time wasted while commuting could’ve been time well spent with one’s family or even with one’s pets. The
Global warming has become an undisputed fact about our current livelihoods; our planet is warming up and we are definitely part of the problem. However, this isn’t the only environmental problem that we should be concerned about. All across the world,
In recent years, major cities across the globe have developed innovative new methods of transportation that could revolutionize the way humans travel and ultimately replace automobiles throughout the industrialized world. Many supporters of this movement believe restricting the use of cars will have a positive impact on society as a whole. Some people believe that taking away automobiles is preposterous given the gravity of which citizens depend on them; although true, replacing cars would have significant benefits throughout society that would outweigh this consequence and ultimately create a new global social order. Restricting cars in cities and encouraging alternate methods of transportation would reduce humans’ carbon footprint, make cities
Car dependency is one of the most important problems in the United States. Owning a personal car is mandatory in most small towns. All roads are designed for cars without pedestrian ways, and so much of the land is reserved for parking lots. Pedestrian-friendly cities’ rates are really low when it is compared with car-friendly ones.
Point4: We have become so dependent on our cars to get from one destination to another. We drive just about anywhere instead of walking. Everybody drives it’s gotten to the point we drive around for just a hobby. When we do this we don’t take into consideration that we’re only hurting ourselves. Those are unnecessary drives we can avoid. Now it’s essential as well we need to drive to our jobs, but on our drive there we encounter traffic. In the article “How Traffic Jams Affect Air Quality” by Paul Sanders explains how “One study suggests that emissions start to go up when average freeway speed dips below 45 miles per hour (mph).” (Car pollution). So being stuck in traffic only gets cars to emit more harmful gases. We need to go about this and change our way of
Global warming is not just something that will happen, it’s something that is happening. People around the world are trying to fix what the human race has done to our planet. The damage is reaching a point that stopping air pollution and other atmospheric harmful things won’t be enough. Countries need to pull together whatever resources they can to do whatever they can. Earth is like our food source it feeds us, but you don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
This is one of the main cause environmental pollution. Canadian vehicle owners are now double what they were in 1960. (The David Suzuki Foundation, n.d.). In Canada, Moreover, about 9 million workers said that they had never used public transportation to commute. The reason why they don’t use it, because about 7.4 millions of these people thought that public transportation would be somewhat or very inconvenient (Campbell, W., 2011, October
Global warming has escalated at the fastest rate in recorded history. We Americans don’t realize how much CO2 is produced every year. The burning of fossil fuels to make electricity is the largest provenance heat-trapping pollution. The United States comes in second of producing large amounts of CO2. Many climate changes have occurred due to the burning of fossil fuels. We need to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and start utilizing clean energy. Us Americans need to stop utilizing gas-operated cars instead we should use battery operated cars which is better for the
Adam complains about parking at least three time a day. He is late to economics class every Tuesday and Thursday, and Professor Willis simply cannot take it anymore. Professor Willis told Adam that he needs to wake up earlier in order to get a spot on campus, but sleep is vital to all college students. Sleep should not be compensated for the time to find parking. Adelphi should instead listen to the proposal in this essay, which deals with the plan of action to create more parking spots on campus. Spots are limited, and Adam is not alone. There is a large number of people who have a problem finding a parking spot. Parking is the number one problem on campus for both residents and commuters and a solution is needed. Adelphi has the money and power to create more parking spots on campus by extending both of the underground parking lots. The benefits of extending the underground parking lots will allow for Adelphi to cut down on their shuttle service, permit all students to park on campus, and for less accidents to occur.
Modifying our behaviors to reverse the effects of global warming will be a challenge for the entire world, but it is essential that we do so. We must preserve our planet for the future generations to ensure
Thus, with the increasing number of automobile ownerships, parking has become a confusing as well as conflicting subject for a number of people. One reason for this is, “Few cities bothered to conduct a site-specific analysis to establish how much parking was sufficient but relied instead on guidelines published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers” (Broaddus, 2007). As a result, over the years, this has led to a huge oversupply of parking, that essentially promoted increased vehicle use, along with traffic congestion and harmful air pollution, as argued by Don Shoup, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles who teaches on planning and economics. He suggests, with so much free parking motorist cruised around searching for free or low priced parking, contributing to the congestion and environmental hazards. It is the opinion of this author, that the issue revolves around the lack of properly managing the aggregate demand for parking in relation with prices and the real GDP. If the
Global warming should be one of the gravest concerns to the future of human kind and making an effort on every individual level will decrease the factors that have the greatest impact such as combustion emissions and hazardous chemicals. No scientist would deny the increase and temperature and none would stop at even saying that the problem will only increase exponentially. Along with greenhouse gases and CFC (Chloroflorocarbons) humans must realize that they are very significantly at the heart of the crisis. Not only does this threaten coastline properties and the health of the planet overall, habitats
Being lazy is a great thing because so much time is saved. Time may be saved, but in exchange, the environment gets destroyed instead. Driving a car to work may be faster, but it also destroys the environment so much faster. Biking to the store serves the same purpose and it saves the environment greatly. Cars are a huge contributor to global warming. Cars and trucks combined are responsible for one-fifth of all US emissions. They release about 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases for every gallon of gas used (Union of Concerned Scientists). About five pounds of those gases come from production, extraction, and delivery of gasoline. More than 19 pounds are released per gallon from a car's tailpipe (Union of Concerned Scientists). 1.2 billion cubic yards of polluted air is from manufacture. Painting and coating cars produces 40 million pounds of air releases and 24 million pounds of hazardous waste a year. A car's lifetime produces 1.3 billion cubic yard of polluted air and scatters 40 pounds of worn tire particles, brake debris, and worn road surface into the atmosphere (Bike to Work Day). Pollutants released a year add up to over 12,140 lbs for cars and 17,000 for light trucks. Some of those pollutants are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides (Bike to Work Day). By choosing to bike or walk instead of drive, the amount of gases and waste contributing to global warming, drops drastically. Choosing to drive instead of taking a greener form of transportation is a great threat to the environment.
Encouraging people to use bicycles instead of cars will decrease the ecological and environmental footprint people have in the country. Riding a bicycle uses no non-renewable energy and emits no pollution. Cars consume a lot of energy and natural resources even before they make it to the open road. Their production leaves a big footprint because materials like steel, rubber, glass and paint must be created before the car is ready to be used. The
