The recent panic about global warming is causing problems throughout the United States. The global warming debate is a variety of arguments regarding the nature, causes, and consequences of worldwide global warming. The disputed issues include, whether this warming trend is extraordinary or within normal climatic variations, whether humankind has caused it, and whether the increase is an object of poor measurements. The controversy is much more pronounced in the popular media than in the scientific literature, where there is a strong agreement that global surface temperatures have increased in recent decades and that the trend could mainly be caused by human related emissions of greenhouse gases. The question is, is global warming human …show more content…
Within the past 3,000 years, there have been five extended periods when it was distinctly warmer than today. Atmospheric temperatures have been rising for the past 300 years, but remain below the 3,000-year average.( Butchart, 2010) Corresponding warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet 's recent climate changes have a natural cause, according to Habibullo Abdussamatov. Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of space research at St. Petersburg 's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun. Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping enormous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. ("National geographic global," 2010 ) Mars, too, appears to be experiencing more mild temperatures. Abdussamatov believes that changes in the sun 's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets. Mars and Earth, have both experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories. "Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said. By studying fluctuations in the warmth of the sun, Abdussamatov believes he can see a pattern that fits with the ups and downs in climate we see on Earth and Mars. ("National geographic
Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.
There are always two sides to every story and every different point of view has a right to be heard. When it comes to the discussion of global warming—a gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature—there are two very distinct and opposing points of view. The world seems to be split between global warming being caused by humans and it being a natural occurrence; the latter being the viewpoint that I strongly support due to the evidence I will present in detailin this paper. In contrast, I will also discuss, in Part II, the “anti-thesis” or the opposing viewpoint that humans are actually the
In modern America few problems prove to be as fundamentally problematic as the theory of human induced global warming. Its repeated coverage from within the media and political arena are influencing people worldwide, putting those who think differently in an outcast shadow. The truth of the matter is, to not believe in human induced global warming has become politically incorrect and unacceptable in the public eye. The theory of human induced global warming can be defined as the rise in temperature through human pollution of greenhouse gases resulting in catastrophic alterations in the earth 's environment. However, human pollution of greenhouse gases is so minor that it is not a contribution to the
Did you know that 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate change in the last century is due to human activities? Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. Due to these things, we have encountered unusual climate changes, such as ocean acidification and the melting of ice caps. Global warming is real and can be reduced as well as affected by humans, but it is not a topic we need to prioritize.
Global warming has been a major concern and has greatly affected the environment around the world for years. Andrew Revkin stated in a New York Times article entitled “A Closer Look at Climate Panel’s Findings on Global Warming Impacts” that climate change throughout the 21st century will lead to increases in ill-health in many regions, as compared to a baseline without climate change. There have been a number of debates regarding this controversial topic, though most of the scientific community can recognize the existence of global warming. Many often question if this effect on the environment is caused by human activity or natural cycles. About 95 percent of scientific studies prove that global warming is essentially caused by man.
Global warming is one of the most controversial topics in the world today. Global warming describes a condition where the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans increase. Global warming is predicted to have significant harmful effects on life on earth. The controversy arises from conflicting evidence in the scientific community as to whether humans are contributing to global warming, whether it is a result of natural forces that are beyond the control of humans, or in some cases, whether it is even occurring at all. This research will examine credible evidence of global warming and will explore its causes and
Nowadays, the whole world are paying attention on the controversy about climate change and global warming. Hot topics include whether global warming is occurring, warming level in modern times, causes, effects and what that action should be taken (Science Daily). On one hand, there is a strong consensus that human and industries take main responsibility for the rapid increase of global surface temperatures in recent decades, and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide is the major cause of global warming. Meanwhile, some people that come from organizations with
“Global warming, along with the cutting and burning of forests and other critical habitats, is causing the loss of living species at a level comparable to the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. That event was believed to have been caused by a giant asteroid. This time it is not an asteroid colliding with the Earth and wreaking havoc: it is us.” This is the statement that Al Gore made in his movie, An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It. For the last several years, movies like this have been in the mainstream. The environment, climate change, and global warming have been at the forefront of global sociopolitical issues. But what is “global warming” truly? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, global warming refers to the recent and ongoing rise in global average temperature near Earths surface… caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is causing climate patterns to change.” (EPA) The EPA, NASA, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, along with 97% of climate scientists all agree – humans are the major cause of global warming and climate change. (NASA) To determine whether or not this is true, one must look at the evidence for rapid climate change itself, and then the evidence of all the causes, and
Global warming is a topic that everyone is familiar with, but not everyone really understands how they can help to prevent it. Global warming is defined as the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of Earth’s climate system. Scientists have been studying global warming for over a century now, and most believe that greenhouse gasses are the cause and humans are the number one greenhouse gas contributor to our atmosphere. Greenhouse gasses however are produced by big industries, regulating these gasses might mean less and more costly production for these big companies. Most people believe that our economy will suffer from cutting down on fossil fuel usage to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this the United States
According to the Marriam-Webster Dicionary, climate is the usual weather conditions in a particular place or region. Climate includes patterns of temperature, precipitation (rain or snow), humidity, wind and seasons. The effect of Global warming is causing damage in many parts of United States. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon endured their worst wild fire season ever. (S. 2007).
Global warming has been a very controversial topic in the 21st century that is very well divided into two groups. There are those who believe it’s just a myth, and then there are those who absolutely believe global warming is occurring. There is completely no doubt that why someone should deny that fact that the Earth is undergoing global warming right now. Global warming is the term used to describe the Earth’s increase in temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and its oceans which influences the increase of climate. Since the start of the industrial revolution, climate has increased since the overload of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increasing average temperatures. Many people deny that the Earth is currently undergoing global warming, but don’t take a chance to look at the evidence. This event is something one should take into consideration because it could not only just affect the
The earth is a beautiful and extraordinary planet, but are we treating it right? For the past 20 decades, temperatures have been rising along with hundreds of factors contributing to it. Climate change concerns the public as they wonder if its occurring, how much has occurred in the modern era, what has caused it, what the effects will be if we don’t do anything about it and much more. Many people and scientist agree that mankind is the number one cause of climate change. Humans have influenced this by greenhouse gases, methane nitrous oxide.
In recent years, the controversial subject of global warming has been more predominantly brought to our attention. Is the threat of global warming real? Is it man-made or is this just a natural cycle of earth? Does it really affect earth’s inhabitants? Should action be taken against it? If so, what kind and to what extent? It cannot be only a coincidence that the alarmingly rapid climate change coincides perfectly with the increased amount of pollutants that humans release into the environment. The once stable climate has in recent years begun to skyrocket, thus altering the delicate structure of earthly life. This proves to be hazardous to the future of the planet; some people worry that many of the resources the environment provides that
‘Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have
Climatologist Cliff Harris and Meteorologist Randy Mann observe that “our planet seems to be in a cycle of constant change” (Harris and Mann) in their analysis and data compilation of global warming and cooling cycles. They procured a displaying a cycle of temperatures from 2500BC to predicted 2040AD which did indeed show that there were constant cycles of warm and cold periods. The areas of warmer climate times were when humanity was more prosperous, such as the times of Rome and the Medieval period. Furthermore, they found in their research that in periods of colder temperatures, volcanic activity was high, which leads them to believe that high volcanic activity can be a cause or a result of global cooling (Harris and Mann). This proves that global warming is not suddenly upon us and will be our doom. When, in fact, these cycles have been occurring for as long as we can tell and we, as with all other life on Earth, has adapted to changing times and climates successfully. The periods of global warming also appeared to be prosperous times for humanity, showing we benefitted from warmer times. Meanwhile, it seems as though volcanic activity plays a role in the fate of our planet. Although, recently us humans have been outputting large amounts of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide. As Lee Howard, an environmental activist, claims: “…abrupt global warming events
