Smuggling is the transfer of illegal substances, and or unauthorized goods across borders by either the receiving or sending country (Andreas, 2009). Moreover, what is smuggled can consist of numerous items such illegal narcotics’ such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other illicit drugs. However, legal prescription drugs are smuggled on a frequent basis into the United States as well. Due to the low cost, many Americans find low cost pharmaceuticals smuggled across the border from Mexico an attractive alternative to the expensive pharmaceuticals sold in in the United States.
While drugs may be one of the more common items to be smuggled across borders globally, many other different items are smuggled each day globally. Other commonly

Just as the developed nations of the world taken advantage of new technologies and the Internet, so to has organized crime. In the last decade or two, transnational organized crime (TCO) has become a significant threat for many countries around the world and both local and global economies. In 2009, it was estimated that TCO generated $870 billion dollars, or equal to 1.5 percent of the global GDP (Town, n.d.). Additionally, thousands of lives are lost each year as a result of TCO actives such as human, narcotics, and weapons trafficking. In recent years to combat human trafficking the U.S. Military has taken extra steps to prevent and protect services members from the risk presented by TCOs through human trafficking and the potential impacts it can have on national security. Furthermore, the military now provides annual training to help service members identify signs of possible human trafficking and the proper procedures for not only avoiding it, but reporting it as
Summary: The southwest border region is the most significant national level storage, transportation and transshipment area for illicit drug shipments that are designed for markets throughout the US. The south west region is the biggest drug smuggling zone in the US. More illegal drugs are seized in this area than in any other arrival zone. Mexican cartels have developed expensive drug transportation networks extending from the Southwest border to all regions of the US. Drugs gets smuggled between ports of entry along the southwest border and are stored all throughout the US. The threat posted to the nation by the Mexican cartels that operate in Mexico and the southwest border region extends well beyond drug trafficking to other criminal activities including border
Social Institutions are groups of people who have come together for a common purpose. These institutions have formed a common bond. They have done research and have concluded by joining they can achieve more. Some of the social institutions in the local community are the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts. There are generally five different types of social institutions. They are political, educational, religious, economic, and family. Each is filled with members of a common goal. Organized crime organizations have adopted the philosophy of social institutions. They
National Intelligence Analysis, Criminal Intelligence, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (2007) maintain that from 2004, the amount of MDMA (ecstasy) shipments and the quantity of ecstasy seized started to decrease to the point that shipments were essentially eliminated by 2006. In 2006, Canada took the Netherlands' and Belgium's place as the predominant source of ecstasy supply both domestically and in the United States illicit drug market (NIA et al., 2007). A more recent report by the RCMP indicates that the situation with respect to synthesis, distribution and export of ecstasy is rapidly escalating (NIA et al., 2010). National Intelligence Analysis et al. (2010) argue that land transport is the main method of smuggling MDMA through the Canada-US border as rail and air methods of shipment are not as common. Canada would export MDMA to nations in the Asia-Pacific region, and MDMA seizures in Mexico and Jamaica indicated that criminal organizations in Canada were further expanding their international operations (NIA et al., 2010). Although there is a stable market for MDMA in Canada, it is being over-produced, and that excess of MDMA is being used for a lucrative export (Hudson et al., 2014). This is confirmed by a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report, which contends that the predominant source of ecstasy in North America is criminal organizations in Canada (Hudson et al., 2014). Even though MDMA trafficking is occurring all across Canada, British
It is no secret that drugs are prevalent in every nation in the world. However, how do these illegal drugs move throughout the world? Drug traffickers have gotten very creative in the methods they use to transport drugs across state line and country’s borders. Major drug cartels of Mexico recruit children with the promises of fast easy money and little risk of detection by police. They use children for several reasons; they are less suspicious, can travel on planes without adults, they create a “family” look so no attention is drawn to a group. What the children do not know is they are expendable to the cartel, and if the transport does not go according to plan, their lives are on the line.
The United States agency of drugs have discovered that for all of the illegal drugs consumed in the nation has been transported by the Mexican cartels. “U.S. federal officials say that the mexican cartels operate in dozens of U.S. cities and analysts say they are moving to consolidate their control of the entire supply chain of illegals drugs”(Schwartz, 1). The government of the United States have been conducting the investigation to now if the cartels are north. Many big cities today have a piece of the cartel organization working there and also producing drugs to distribute within the city. According to the investigation done by the DEA and U.N officials “Mexican cartels have established command - and - control centers to orchestrate cocaine shipments by sea and air along the still wild caribbean coast with the help of local authorities”(Booth, 2). All though that the cartel are moving to the United States they are still leaving command center in mexico to conduct shipments by ground or any other shipments overseas. The cartel is able to transport such quantities of drugs with help of the local authorities and other corrupt government officials.
3. Characterize the initiation ritual. How do you think it compares to the “real” ritual – if such a ritual exists?
In today’s day and age human trafficking is a serious problem that is only getting worse as we become more technologically advanced. It is easy to transport human beings across the border, on ships, and into foreign countries. Women, children, and even men are the victims of these individuals. These poor souls stolen for the sex trade or for physical labor as a slave in modern world. As our enemies become more sophisticated in their evil craft, so must our law enforcement and investigation agencies. In order to stay up to par with the enemy these organizations make sure they stay up to date with the most advanced programs, tools, and systems in order to not only catch those responsible for mayhem, but to give a sense of justice to those who were wronged in the first place. We begin with a history of what human trafficking is, some current cases that were followed by the world, and way we fight the enemy and counteract their form of terrorism.
When it comes to finding drugs such as cocaine, heroine, meth, etc… Apart from being highly costly, drug law enforcement seems to be not doing their job as well as they could be. Illegal drugs are still finding their way into the United States. Whether it’s over or under the border, people are still finding ways to smuggle dangerous drugs into our country. “It is very conducive to smuggling activities,” said Anthony Coulson, the Assistant
Drug trafficking has become an increasingly growing problem in the world today. Illegal drug trade is a worldwide black market consisting of production, distribution, packaging, and sale of illegal substances. Although today’s "War on Drugs" is a modern phenomenon, drug problems have been a common problem throughout history. The market for illegal drugs is massive, when we consider the estimated global drug trade value is worth $321 billion (Vulliamy). The most drug trafficking happens on the border between Mexico and the United States. Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon said, “Our neighbor is the largest consumer of drugs in the world. And everybody wants to sell him drugs through our door and our window”
Author Peter Andreas explains that a "wide range of smuggling practices" has been part of the "cross-border economic exchange since the nineteenth century," and hence the present-day smuggling of drugs across the border into the United States is not at all a new phenomenon (Andreas, 2012, p. 29). In fact Andreas explains that the economic relationship between the United States and Mexico "…was founded on smuggling," and today (as drugs move from south to north) things are opposite of what they were two hundred or so years ago when the smuggling went from north to south (Andreas, 29).
Crime has continually evolved thus becoming more complicated especially due to technological developments. The other factors that have contributed to crime complexity includes demographic changes for males below 30 years of age which is a crime-prone age limit; and macro-economic scales that include the unemployment rate, consumers' spending power and economic stability of the region. These factors revolve around individual's income generating potential which is an aspect that draws a line between wealth and poverty. International borders have currently become porous due to intensified trading between regions, travel needs that are driven by various
Once a drug courier has been selected the individual will go through a training period in which they swallow or stuff a large number of harmless objects such as plums and condoms filled with powered sugar. After they have proven to be trustworthy and capable of the task they will then be sent out on there first assignment. Drug smugglers commonly ingest large bags containing drugs prior to crossing international boarders and recover them after their arrivals at their destination. In order to prevent being caught they will carry a variety of paraphernalia required to conceal and repack premature packets if they evacuate too early. This usually includes condoms, petroleum jelly, latex fingers and gloves. Also deodorants and sprays can be
Smuggling is the movement of pretty much any kind of goods into or out of a country even if the goods are illegal or legal. Legal could be vegetation, tobacco, alcohol. During the prohibition days, alcohol was illegal, I guarantee tequila was a hot item coming across the border. The reason people smuggled is not limited too but for profitable reasons or because that specific item is illegally being moved into the country to make money on selling. Really to me it all comes down to the mighty dollar. Smuggling is a way to pass taxes and laws so that they perp can have total profit of moving goods that are not taxed or legal to even sell. The selling of military grade firearms and drugs has a dramatic impact on society. The drug world is unforgiving where the wrong move could get your entire family wiped off the earth. This underground world has the firepower of the best firearms and the no forgiveness for deceit. The fear
Trafficking in human beings is now the fastest-growing business of organized crime. Men, women and children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders. More than one person is smuggled across a border every minute which is the equivalent to ten jumbo jets every single day. And the trade earns twice as much as the Coca Cola brand. (STOP THE TRAFFIK 2014)
Transnational crime is a growing problem. Transnational crime is defined as “self-perpetuating associations of individuals who operate transnational for the purpose of obtaining power, influence, monetary and/or commercial gains, wholly or in part by illegal means, while protecting their activities through a pattern of corruption and/ or violence, or while protecting their illegal activities through a transnational structure and the exploitation of transnational commerce or communication mechanisms.” (National Security Council, n.d.) . Transnational crimes are known under other names such as cross-national crime, global crime, international crime, and
