In the previous years there has been an increase of studies concerning gluten, which in turn, heightened the public’s awareness of how it affects the body. Because of this awareness, many people have altered their diets to avoid foods containing gluten. In fact, a survey done in 2013 reported that one third of the American population is already eliminating gluten-containing foods in their meals.
But why do people, including you, should avoid foods that contain gluten? Here are a few reasons why:
1. Celiac Disease
Some people think that gluten isn’t necessarily bad for the body. However, there are a number of people who are gluten-intolerant, which means that their bodies react abnormally when they ingest gluten. In fact, one of the most well-known

4. Aggravates Irritable Bowel Syndrome
A research has shown that people who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have adverse reactions to gluten-containing diet. The study noted that the control group with IBS who ate foods with gluten was reported to experience bloating, more pain, and fatigue, than the group who follow a gluten-free diet. In addition, other studies also show that consumption of gluten can cause irritation and damage to the lining of the intestines.
5. Causes Unnatural Cravings
If you’re not at all worried of being gluten-intolerant or you feel that you’re not at risk of having neurological disorders, but you’re very conscious about your weight, then you really have to take the gluten-free diet seriously.
Studies have found out that gluten contains exorphins (small proteins) that could cause addiction when it reaches the brain through the blood stream. Because of this, experts theorize that consuming wheat or any type of food that contains gluten could trigger unusual cravings (wheat is ranked second to sugar as one of the most addictive foods) putting you at high risk of gaining
One health condition that affects people is Coeliac Disease; this is intolerance to the protein ‘gluten’ which is found in wheat, barley and rye. When coming into contact with gluten the body produces antibodies which then attack the lining of the bowel. This then affects the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food and can even lead to
Video “InFact: Gluten Free Diets” by Brain Dunning. Being a waitress I am always being asked if we can accommodate a gluten- free diet. If our food contains gluten and if we have gluten free products such as bread. To be honest I don’t even know what gluten is. This video points out gluten is a protein which is found in wheat, rye, and barley. When people ask me for gluten free I have always wondered if it’s for health benefits or some kind of allergy. Dunning answered my question, with his claim that some people cannot tolerate gluten including people who have celiac disease. He also does point out that gluten- free fad has grown. It is another thing people are worrying about for no real reason. So yes some eat gluten- free for health reason
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten damages the lining of the small intestine and thus leads to a wide range of symptoms and health issues. However, it is often confused with gluten intolerance or misrepresented as a dietary restriction. Consequently, most people assume cutting off pasta and baked goods from one’s diet for a limited period of time is enough to cure it. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness of the true definition of celiac disease and to familiarize people with the seriousness of this illness. This blog is my platform to share my story with this medical condition. My aim is to highlight the fact that having celiac is a lifelong journey that goes far beyond bread and cookies. My ultimate goal is to reveal the impact of the disease on one’s lifestyle and to uncover the concealed and invisible aspects of being celiac.
Some of the most prominent health issues people have who consume gluten are diarrhea, anemia, skin rashes, and bone pain (more prominent in Celiac disease). In people with gluten resistance or intolerance the more prominent symptoms are gas, bloating, constipation,
Celiac disease seems to be on an up rise today. You now walk into grocery stores and restaurants and see gluten-free food everywhere. Thankfully, for the celiac disease community, life has become a little easier with these accommodations. When most people hear celiac disease many just think gluten-free diets, but they do not realize that celiac disease can affect all parts of the body and mind, or that the disease has a higher prevalence in women. It is a new lifestyle that many have to take on. In the next few pages, I will discuss the affects that this disease has on the body systems, the lifestyle changes many make when diagnosed with celiac disease, and the importance of educating those who are dealing with the disease on a day to day basis. I also will discuss information from two articles which focus in on the direct affects that the disease takes on women living with it, and the lifestyle changes that are necessary to manage the symptoms.
Additionally, consumers are getting more inclined towards eating gluten free products. As per a research 5% prefer gluten free products to treat celiac disease, while 6% for alleviate asthma, 9% for depression, 10% for cleansing their digestive system, 12 for stress reduction, 13 for improving their mental functioning and concentration, while 25% for shedding weight, 33% due to the nutritional value and 39% for their digestive heath (Sutton. 2014).
I have been playing volleyball for as long as I can remember. From playing in club volleyball tournaments in the spring to bumping the volleyball around in my living room, I spend most of time playing or practicing for a sport. Most people believe that the only reason kids play sports is because they have athletic skill. I believe that playing a sport is more than just becoming the best player physically, but becoming the best player that your team needs you to be.
3. In her article “Understanding WHEAT &GLUTEN: Issues in Today's Clients” Tammera Karr writes about the health concerns involving gluten consumption and the current research involving it. She writes that there is extensive research about gluten that shows that is causes several different health problems as indicated in answer 1. She summarizes how the immune system works in our body and about how our T cells are able to destroy antigens in the body and they also function in signaling other cells of the immune system to perform what they are supposed to do. This is important because a person who has a gluten allergy has T cells that do not work properly and they are not able to differentiate between the good and the bad things in their body. Karr writes that when a person consumes gluten, that gluten is carrying DNA of foreign bodies that are not naturally found in wheat. Proteins called Glaidins are one of the foreign bodies it carries and this protein can be found in rye, barley, spelt, trticale, and oats that have been cross contaminated. Gliadin acts as a trigger to the lymphocytes in the small intestine and it causes inflammation also known as “leaky gut syndome”(Karr). These Gliadin proteins are not naturally occurring. Wheat hybridization, genetic engineering, herbicide, and pesticide usage, sail husbandry, and food manufacturing are more commonly used and are the main source of these proteins. Because our
Eating a gluten-free diet is time consuming and expensive, but it is important. Celiac disease can cause numerous health issues in the future if the gluten-free diet is not followed. The gluten-free diet needs to be taken seriously and
Celiac disease is different from other food allergies. Celiac disease is where the small intestine is diseased. A person with celiac accidentally consumes something with gluten will be more likely to have intestinal problems such as constipation, gas, and diarrhea (Liu, Dong, Barón, Taki, Norris, Frohnert, & Rewers 2017). Symptoms of the condition include abdominal pain, nausea, anemia, heartburn, weight loss, mouth ulcers, and headaches.
Celiac disease is often confused for an allergic illness because (like an allergy) it requires a foreign substance to trigger it. Usually diagnosed by a gastroenterologist, it is a digestive disease that can cause serious complications, including malnutrition and intestinal damage, if left untreated. Individuals with celiac disease must avoid gluten, found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats. There seems to be a genetic predisposition to developing celiac disease, however not all people with a family history of celiac disease develop the condition. There is another reason, yet unknown, why the autoimmune response
There is an estimate of 3 million people in the United States that have celiac disease (CD). Individuals with CD, any foods that contain gluten trigger the production of antibodies that attack and damage the lining of the small intestine; thus, limiting nutrient absorption (U.S. FDA, 2013). On August 2, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule that defines “gluten-free” for food labeling. “The FDA’s new ‘gluten-free’ definition will help people with this condition make food choices with confidence and allow them to better manage their health,” said the FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. (Burgess, 2013).
If one were to survey Americans about what they think a terrorist looks like, it is not surprising what the most common description would be. The majority of people would likely describe a bearded, turban-clad middle eastern man waving around an AK-47 while shouting, “allahu akbar!” Although there is nothing inherently frightening about bearded men and practicing religion, somehow being middle eastern and practicing Islam became one of the dirtiest crimes in the United States. After 9/11 it seems that almost overnight, America developed an irrational phobia of anyone who remotely looks middle eastern, and has since systematically oppressed and mistreated innocent
The reason why people become intolerant to gluten is still unknown for the most part. Some studies point to the possibility of inheritance, some others to the acquisition of it because of external factors that combined can trigger either of both. In an article by Moises Velasquez from the New York Times, in which he
