
Genetically Modified Organisms in the food supply are not the answer to curing world hunger. Genetically modified foods are being produced day in and day out, but there has been nothing done to terminate world hunger. Moreover, the world has a surplus amount of food, but still, people are hungry, making the problem, not one of quantity but one of distribution. However, healthy food is expensive, the average yearly income in underdeveloped countries averages less than $1,000 per year. Proponents of Genetically modified foods say that GMO’s the same as other foods except they are manufactured with different chemicals that adjust them to grow faster and to grow more. The biotech companies have invested billions of dollars they determine that this technology will have the potential for enormous profit and the means to gain control over world hunger. If they truthfully wanted to help stop world hunger why not spend the billions of dollars on the actual problem itself rather than on the technology for genetically modified foods that may or may not help with the problem. …show more content…
They can patent the seeds and the process with chemicals, causing crops not to grow without their patented chemicals. They can prevent seeds from reproducing themselves. All of this is so they can generate money, and that’s all they care about if they cared about the hunger problem they would have done something by now. People might assume that by refusing to eat these foods we are threatening the world with starvation, but this is not true. Genetically engineered crops are being created not for the reason that they’re productive or in behalf of they help real human needs, but as a result, they are patentable.Consequently, these companies do not care about anything but their profits. John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution states that “if genetically engineered plants were designed to reverse world hunger, you would expect them to bring higher yields. But there is increasing evidence that they do just the opposite”. Numerous studies have shown that GM crops do not have a higher yield production, but in fact have at times shown a lower outcome. In 2000, “research done by the University of Nebraska found the yields of GE soybeans were six to eleven percent lower than conventional plants” (Robbins). In a new food science called genetic engineering, they take genes and crossbreed them to make genes that do not occur in nature (NonGMOProject). There are many scientists who question the safety of these new foods, however even the FDA bypasses these objections in the favor of the steady cash flow that comes with cheap ingenuity.
Recently, there has been controversy on whether GMOs are favorable, or synthetic and faulty. Although, many are not actually informed properly about what GMOs actually are. A GMO is a genetically modified organism, in which its DNA is taken and implanted into another plant or animal. Filmmaker, Jeremy Seifert, is quite precarious on the subject, considering there is not much we really know about these genes. Jeremy says “I suddenly felt uneasy about the food we were eating,” (Seifert). We are unaware of the health and safety risks that come with the use of these genes on everyday food items. The answer to that is because genetically modifying food does not increase yields and can actually be less effective at raising yields than other methods that do not use genetically modified foods.
