I am writing you to share my opinion about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and Genetically Modified Foods (GMF). As a student at Sylvania Southview High school, we have spent the past week learning about GMOs. Personally, I believe GMO present an opportunity to feed our ever growing population, not just in Ohio, but all over the world. According to Gwynne Taylor of Resilience.org, “For the sixth time in the past seven years, the human race will grow less food than it eats this year. We closed the gap by eating into food stocks accumulated in better times, but there is no doubt that the situation is getting serious.” Before long, we do not change what we are doing, we will completely deplete our food storages. GMOs present the opportunity to grow new plants that can be more resistant to herbicide, grow with less and and nutrients, and even grow all over the world. …show more content…
There are many possible advantages of GMOs such as a larger food supply for those who cannot afford it, and farmers can grow more crops at a much faster rate. While the positive effects are long, many people consider GMOs to be bad for humans. These people base their arguments on two main points: that GMOs are unhealthy and they have possible dangerous side effects. On the other hand, according to Tamar Haspel of the Washington Post, many sources are extremely biased and very few can be
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
So why do we use GMOs? Well there is a “So-called advantage” with these products that it costs less to produce and they are better quality. But do we know if they’re better quality or our bodies? There’s not enough research to prove that the human race and other organisms have suffered dire consequences from consuming these genetically engineered foods. However there are some linkages that link GMOs to some health problems, environmental damage, and farmer/consumer rights.
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” – Ursula K. Le Guin. No matter what good some people believe they are doing, everything seems to come with a consequence, and the question is whether or not the good overpowers the bad. Many experts argue that Genetically Modified foods are actually beneficial to, not only people, but animals, plants, and the world overall. Some experts even state that, not only are they beneficial, but that they also protect the environment and aid food productivity. Most farmers actually recommend GMO’s because they are easier to grow, maintain, and tend to be more profitable; however, countless other experts have come to realize that GMO foods are untested, unsafe, and unhealthy. Studies indicate that
GMOs are beneficial in many ways. GMOs are great for poor people to buy and grow. GMOs are safe and people have been eating them for a long time. Also these genetically modified foods are safe from pests and diseases that can make people or animals very sick. GMOs are beneficial for lot’s of people.
GMO’s are commonly misunderstood to be a negative way of producing food but contrary to popular belief they actually benefit americans and help america prosper. A GMO is a crop or livestock animal that has had its DNA altered and specific changes made to receive the desired result. Certain parts of DNA are either taken from or added to and organism to somehow better it. The use of GMOs in not as new as most citizens may think and can be very beneficial. GMOs are used quite often, they can
GMOs have been around since the 1980's. GMOs, or genetically modified organisms combine different DNAs from different sources into one. The question whether to have GMOs has been a controversial topic, but I believe that the benefits outweigh the costs. Of the stronger points for GMOs is that they include a lot of nutrition. By combining several DNAs the nutrition levels of the product are drastically increased. On the other hand, the most common argument against GMOs is that they are inorganic and artificial. Many people are against eating products that have been genetically altered. They prefer to eat the natural product and obtain less nutrients than eat something that has been genetically modified. I also believe that GMOs are more beneficial than the normal product because of how frequently they have been used. It is fairly rare to see in a grocery store a section designated for organic food only, thus this is to show that GMOs are more widely common. GMOs are said to have alleged effects on many people, but they solution regarding this population is to simply not obtain the product; it isn't a reason to stop the production of
“In a sweeping 400-page report, the country’s top scientific group found there was not evidence to support claims that genetically modified organisms are dangerous for either the environment or human health” (Heikkinen, 2016). Even Europe, a country that does not use this technology has proven that GMOs are a safe food source. “There is a scientific consensus, even in Europe, that the GMO foods and crops currently on the market have brought no documented new risks either to human health or to the environment” (Paarlberg, 2010). The biggest argument against GMOs would be that they are not safe to humans or the environment, but there has not yet been any documented evidence that approved GMOs have brought on new risks either to humans, animals or the environment (Paarlberg, 2010). Along with being scientifically proven numerous times to be a safe food source, there is also no confirmation that GMOs pose any risk to humans, animals, or the environment. “The central issue with GM crops is that because there are no concrete adverse effects for people to quantify, they can only focus on theoretical and largely unquantifiable ones” (Buiatti, Christou, & Pastore, 2013). Hundreds of experts have all concluded that GMOs have not presented any new risks to humans. “The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris organized a conference with 400 expert
the rise in advanced technology, Genetically Modified Foods were engineered and created. Not only were they new in the sense that it provided an easier source of growing, but it also brought ,with it, a new controversy across the world. Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) are created by moving a gene from one animal to another. An example of this would be moving the gene of an Icefish to a tomato to give the tomato a longer shelf life. GMOs were intended to help increase food production and help foods last longer however, GMOs have become very controversial because of their potential health and environmental effects. GMOs could have detrimental effects on the population and on the Earth.
In the past 20 to 30 years, the production of genetically modified food has caused an uproar in the scientific community. Genetically modified food or, GMOs are organisms that have been altered to where its DNA contains one or more genes that did not originate in that specific organism. GMOs were created to help the production of crops and to make food healthier for consumers by adding vitamins and nutrients. While some people believe that GMOs are unsafe and should be banned, I believe that GMOs are extremely beneficial to the agriculture around the world.
To many people GMO's are seen as a "Crime against nature" or a dangerous and unnatural food source that harm more than help us. However many including myself see the potential of GMO's and agree that the risks are more than over shined by the potential positives this breakthrough in science has to
People have been genetically modifying food for centuries. Humanity has used selective breeding to utilize desired traits in farm animals and crops for so long that they are now different species from their wild variants. However, scientists have been using a new process for giving organisms desired traits called genetic engineering, which is the process of directly transferring genes from one organism to the next. This process can be used between any two living things, no matter how different they are. Some think that this is the future that will make society flourish, while others think that it is a menace that will damage civilization. I believe that GMOs are more beneficial than harmful. GMOs can provide nutrition to those who live in impoverished
Many people think that GMOs are bad but it's very controversial, but we think that GMOs are good because GMO’s requires less space, water to farm, and are weed, and bug resistant, because of this they are easier to farm, thus producing greater yields of crops. “farmers are already
Genetically modified organisms are a breakthrough in biotechnology, and yet they have been met with scrutiny from a large portion of the public. While a recent one trillion meal study found no correlation between GMOs and various diseases, some still believe they have a negative impact on people. Instead of taking the traditional route and disproving the argument that GMOs are harmful, I decided to research some benefits they might have that the public may not think about. A basic understanding and definition of these organisms was laid out in the beginning of the paper, so that the reader would have the basic knowledge required to better understand the benefits these organisms provide. These benefits include lower fuel prices, saving money at the grocery store and at the pharmacy, and even preserving biodiversity.
Admittingly, GMOs have shown to be beneficial in some areas, practicing GMO is not completely bad. Based on Alisa Blackwood’s article on “Genetically modified foods; Food -- Safety measures”, it stated that Researchers are working towards GMO plants that will be more resistant to drought, less allergenic, and be more nutritious (Blackwood). GMOs or Genetically Engineered (GE) crops have evidently given us a bountiful increase in food production due to the scientists at the University of California, Riverside. With the help of wheat plants genes; the scientists genetically altered a corn plant, so it was capable of producing four times the quantity of vitamin c as in average corn plants
Much of the public concern surrounding the safety of GMOs stems from the process of actually creating them. This is admittedly not a natural process, which is a surefire way to raise critic’s eyebrows in doubting their safety. However, there is no evidence that supports these myths. The Committee on Genetically Engineered Crops, The National Academy of Science, and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Recourses all agree after extensive testing and observation that there is no additional harm in the consumption of GMO food. The research conducted in animal studies, as well as chemical analysis of the crops, show no indication that GMOs are negatively affecting human health. The next allegation hurled at GMOs is that they may have
