Gmo Research Paper

Decent Essays

In Hesse, Germany several cows suddenly died after they were fed Syngenta’s genetically engineered maize cow food. As a result of this incident authorities were forced to slaughter the rest of the cattle to avert having this cryptic disease contaminating other cattle houses. What if I told you that the same protein used in the cattle’s feed was also used for human genetically engineered foods? Of course after Syngenta’s cover-up of the dead cattle was exploited, they promptly removed the protein from human genetically engineered foods.
So the question is, what other harmful GMOs are in our food today? Without proper research this question is impossible to answer. So let’s start with an easy question, what is a gmo? “Genetically modified organisms are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross breeding methods.” In layman's terms, gmos are basically unnatural foods that scientists have created in a laboratory somewhere.
That fact alone should be unnerving enough, but …show more content…

However, studies haven’t shown they are safe to eat. Many scientists are concerned that by eating GMOs, they may pass their mutant genes to the bacteria in our digestive systems. We have no clue how these new strains of bacteria may affect our body system’s balance. Concerns are that there can be allergic reactions; and other effects such as toxicity, organ damage, and gene transfer. A major worry is that GMOs may cause antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic genes are placed within the DNA of crops to make them more resilient. The use of GMOs could be a contributing factor in “super bacteria,” like MRSA. Sadly there is no national-level requirement for food with GMOs to be labelled. GMOs can be placed into products and we wouldn’t even know
