WHAT ARE GMOs? A genetically modified organism is simply an organism that, like any other organism, produces tens of thousands of proteins. The only difference is that one or two of them are proteins specifically selected by humans, generally in order to provide an agricultural or economical advantage. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GMOs? On the one hand, many claim that GMOs are absolutely necessary for the continual well-being of the human race, as well as the Earth. GMOs could potentially have a monumentally positive affect on our environment, health, economy, and overall society. GMOs have been and can continue to be used to solve world hunger and malnutrition. Around 500,000 children go blind every year because of a Vitamin A deficiency. So, for example, a strain of rice has been developed that unlike normal rice, contains enough Vitamin A to keep children healthier. GMOs have helped feed more than 300 million Americans and a global population of 7 billion – of which 1 in 8 suffer from hunger and malnutrition. People assume that because genetically engineered plants only first appeared in the lab about 30 years ago and became a certified commercial product in 1994, it’s too soon to tell their full effects on our bodies. They claim GMOs cause cancer, allergies, intolerances, etc., but there is absolutely no solid evidence that directly shows genetically modified organisms affect our bodies in a negative way. Because it is theoretically, not likely, possible for a new gene to express a protein that provokes an immune response, GMOs are almost constantly tested for safety and health approval.
