Lion King. Star Wars. Harry Potter. These are all famous books, movies, or both where family is a central theme. The protagonist in each story is impacted by their family in various ways. Lion King displays the juxtaposition between two family members who try to influence the protagonist in different ways. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker discovers who his father really is, and it makes him question everything he’s known. Harry Potter’s parents died when he was an infant, and the lack of a family finds him desperately aching for one the entire series. Another way family can influence a protagonist in a story is through the different family member’s past. That theme is demonstrated in Go Tell It on the Mountain, by James Baldwin, and Goodbye. Columbus, by Philip Roth. In Go Tell It on the Mountain and Goodbye, …show more content…
Neil’s parents are mentioned in the novel, but their presence and influence on Neil is weak and essentially nonexistent. One of the big differences Neil experiences between the lifestyle he is used to and the Patimkin’s lifestyle is the contrast between Neil’s aunt offering Neil canned peaches, while the Patimkin’s have an entire fridge dedicated to fresh fruit. This inequality accurately describes the class difference between Neil’s lower middle-class family and the upper middle-class Patimkins. During Neil’s relationship with Brenda, he becomes more immersed in the lavish and materialistic lifestyle she and her family live. Neil begins to eat more at dinner and becomes comfortable with Ron in the bathroom at night. Also, when going to run together at the track, the immersion takes a much more literal picture when Roth describes Neil and Brenda as being “dressed similarly, sneakers, sweat socks, khaki Bermudas, and sweat shirts” (Roth 50). Neil even is beginning to look like an upper middle-class family
For such a small word, “Family,” can mean so much. In a dictionary one may read family as people with common ancestors, but a true family is people who stick together and support one another at any cost. Both books, Night by Elie Wiesel, and, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand display the theme of family relationships throughout the story.
Family stories are described as being the best and worst memories a person has with their loved ones. These stories are typically retold down through generations. Encylopedia.com states that, “Almost any bit of lore about a family member or experience qualifies as a family story—as long as it is significant and has worked its way into the family canon to be told and retold."
Family, a foundation to build an empire of a story from yet the easiest to tear down from guilt or the portrayal of guilt. The story depicts two very different siblings, one brother Manchester who is rich, successful, brawny, and has a knack for snacks. Widely different from Manchester is Skidmore due to the fact he is a sad, and creepy individual. Also he does not have a knack for snacks or sweets. Two divergent individuals, yet one unable to function without the help of the other. Now the story would not be complete without one brother becoming completely jealous and despising the other. Commonly this leads to several things such as arguing, fighting, or to better put it, leads to betrayal. Betrayal, a common theme among siblings, say one

The title of Philip Roth’s novel, Goodbye, Columbus, is symbolic of the journey one must take to define one’s individuality or discover one’s life purpose. Superficially, the title is a reference to the ending lyrics of Ron’s senior yearbook album as well as the physical location of Ohio State University in which Ron Patimkin graduated from. With closer analysis, it becomes evident that the title extends to a much deeper meaning of the overall theme of self-examination and self-identity for the protagonist, Neil Klugman. The title, Goodbye, Columbus, primarily acts as an essential metaphor between the expedition Christopher Columbus takes in search of a westward route to India and the life journey Neil embarks upon to discover his identity both in terms of his socioeconomic status and Jewish heritage. The title both clarifies and foreshadows the fate Neil ultimately realizes as he pursues a relationship with Brenda Patimkin.
Brenda also represents sex to Neil therefore she represents two of the major themes of the novel, sex and money. To Neil there are many differences in the Patimkin family that make them very different from his own. They are able to eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen. They have a maid that makes the meals and cleans up after them. They also have a refrigerator full of fruit that is always full. This is all the ideal life for Neil, and when you put Brenda in the mix you have Neil’s perfect world. If he could become part of the Patimkin family he would have sex, money and in essence the American dream. Those three ideas are also present in the novel The Great Gatsby. In this novel the two worlds are divided by old and new money, instead of the idea of assimilation to society after immigration. In this novel, where you live determines your wealth, just as it did in the novel Goodbye Columbus. In The Great Gatsby the idea of wealth representing power is the most prevalent aspect of the novel. The title character Jay Gatsby, is wealthy and he lives in the new money side of town. The love of his life is Daisy Buchannan, and she lives on the old money side of town. Their love is similar to that of Neil and Brenda. They are symbols of two different worlds, yet they find love, but in both of cases the love does not end happy. It is a sign that maybe what you think is perfect and what you think is right for you is not always the
The theme of family is interesting in “The Outsiders” because it shows us that family cares about each other can a family will do anything too keep it together even if that means having massive consequences and that family is forever and will always support you no matter what the circumstances are.
The novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is a prime example why parent figures are important in children's life. For example, Perry is the antagonist of the novel, and he did not have a mother figure due to his mother’s alcoholism, and because of his father's absence, he did not have a father figure. The novel also demonstrates the effect not having a father figure will do to children. Perry, not having mother figure to give him warmth and the love he deserves, turned into someone who does not have any sympathy towards anybody and he does not have any remorse towards the pain and suffering he had inflicted to the clutters family or anybody that would encounter him. “When Smith attacked Mr. Clutter he was under a mental eclipse, deep inside
Family will always make an impact in any decisions you make. Elie Wiesel shows this very well in the book Night. The main character Eliezer and his father are sent to a concentration camp. During the time of them being there Eliezer stayed by his father’s side. Despite all the torturing and beating his father got, he still stayed by Eliezer’s side. Many other people show an example of strong family bonds during the reading of this book.Strong family bonds can sustain people through tragedy and hardship.
A family is the most important and fundamental processes of development in childhood. There are many examples of works that deal with family. In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the reader sees how neglection from a family setting can invoke horrible events. In The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing, presents how Isolation and dislike can and will lead to unfortunate events. In Macbeth by Shakespeare, shows the betrayal of a family and how it affects the mind by playing with it in several different ways. Before a person can see effects of isolations, neglection, and betrayal of a family he/she must “climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
I believe family is such an important part in this family’s life because they are all that each other has got. They hold close to their family because they have been through so much and they see death all around them, so they see the importance of their family. They also are taught from a very young age to respect their elders in the family because they have seen much more and know much more about all aspects of life. They are viewed as wise and knowledgeable and the young family members cherish the opportunity to learn from them. In the movie Gran Torino one
Throughout our lives we're influenced by many. It can have an effect on the way we view issues within societal boundaries. One of the major influences children have in their lives comes from their parents. The parents of a child can have both a positive and a negative influence on their lives. In the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird", there are two excellent examples of how parents can be a major influence on their children. Atticus Finch, father of Jem and Scout Finch, plays the loving, kind and knowledgeable father. He is an example of how parents can have a positive influence on their children. Bob Ewell, father of Mayella Ewell, plays the drunken, abusive, and neglectful father. He is an example of how a parent can be a negative influence
Family is important in every culture, it shapes people and makes them who they are.
A supportive family helps shape your personality and instils good decision making in you. In THE FARMING OF BONES the main character Amabelle was abandoned by her family when she was
Family means many things to different people, yet the word itself can bring about a host of emotions from anyone who hears the word uttered. As a child growing up in the 60s and 70s the family dynamic was defined by the people we grew up with were related to by blood, and extended to the many family members of the different generations that made up the family unit.
