A goal without a plan is doomed to fail. My goal for graduate school is to acquire new writing skills and to refine those I already possess. I want to be the best writer I can be and my plan is to utilize graduate-level education to me my goal of being a better writer. Northern Arizona University’s Master of Arts (MA) in English (Professional Writing emphasis) is the best way for me to do just that. As a foundation for my studies I have a vast amount of experience and formal military training in the field of professional writing.
Professional writing has been the cornerstone of my nearly 15-year career in the U.S. Army. I have completed hundreds of hours of formal training on writing numerous types of reports and educational documents. As an intelligence analyst, I have written well-over 3,000 intelligence reports. Similarly as a member of large-unit staff my primary duty was publishing operational orders for subordinate units distributed throughout several countries. In that capacity I would draft those orders or I was the quality control point of contact ensuring they were error-free and executable. My current position as an instructor of entry-level analysts has given me the chance to delve

Staff duty is a form of continuity of operations regarding a military unit’s operations during off-duty hours. That SOP is what I chose to upload as my writing sample although it does exceed the page count. I selected it because if I possessed to a “highlight reel” of my best products that document would surely be in it. That document was possible only because I had received the proper training. None of my workplace writing would have been possible without the extensive military training the Army, Air Force, and member-agencies of the intelligence community have provided me. I want to expand upon my military training and experience with the education I know NAU’s faculty can give me as a graduate
Currently, I am crossing a huge bridge from high school writing to college writing. Which means there is going to be plenty of room for my writing skills to progress in various ways. After putting thought into where my weaknesses may be in my writing I have arrived to a conclusion of 5 personal goals to improve my essays. My 5 goals will be the pillars that keep my bridge up and from collapsing, by the use of these 5 goals I will easily transition from high school writing to college writing.
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
There is a multitude of jobs and careers I want to have, as some of you may know, but I think we’re only allowed to talk about one. However, there is one job in particular that I know that I’ll do, whether I’m paid for it or not. That job is writing. Not only do you need language skills, but I believe that you will need creativity and an immense amount of patience in order to be a successful writer of any sort.
Rain is crucial to all living things from every walk of life. Rain brings destruction and regrowth, leaving a clean slate and a new beginning. I selected this theme because while the focal point and characters change throughout my writing the constant idea throughout my pieces consisted of moving on, growing, and starting a new beginning. I think that lately my writing has been full of an unknown tone, an excitement/ fear of growing up and starting over. I believe this is all because I've reached a point in my life where I’m going to college and moving away. I’m delighted to be able to go out on my own and experience new things, but it’s kind of nostalgic to know that my childhood is coming to a close. However I’m aware that not all people

Have you ever have had challenges while writing a paper for your teachers. Also then there was times when the teacher was busy; so I received assistance from the other classmates.
When pencil meets paper, magic happens; starting with a blank sheet of paper, and ending with a black and white masterpiece. Even though this work of art has no color or images, it is the most powerful form of expression that you will find. Throughout my high school career, I have fallen in love with the art of writing. I am able to take each thought in my mind and let them flow from my fingertips to an 8.5 by11 sheet of paper. With a strong passion for writing, it is my goal to one day be a journalist and write for the New York Times.
In my younger years of elementary school, I would spend most of my free time writing. One of my teachers taught me how to cultivate my active imagination by turning my thoughts into stories. I filled up three notebooks with fictions by the time I was in 6th grade. After that year, I would only write occasionally until my passion was sparked again around 10th grade. Since then, I’ve been practicing improving both my creative and professional writing skills and wish to incorporate them as a large part of my career.
Since I was ten years old, my father has taught me how to write and sit my goals. He believes that well-written goals will help a person to achieve and how to achieve them, and it also makes the person more optimistic and has self-confident. Therefore, I have taken my first step in my life to achieve several goals, and one of them was being a doctor.
I have had a decent amount of exposure to writing in the past, some of which was business professional and some of which was more scholarly. For example, during my sophomore year of high school, I maintained a blog in which all of my posts where through the lens of a comparison. I tackled a wide range of topics including current issues and scholarly dilemmas by comparing two at a time. Through this experience, I progressed my writing skills and mastered the ability to write formally. This skill is one which I am confident will be an asset to not only my professionalism, but also to our business communication course.
The major concern was that students both past and present did not meet the expectations of professional writing. These complaints were expressed by both corporate executives and graduate faculty. The situation was summed up at a curriculum review meeting. They may have the greatest ideas in the world but, if they cannot express them clearly and persuasively in simple paragraph form, that is clear, concise, and grammatically correct, they are of no use to the company.
Writing can be very hard especially for first time writers. There are a lot of things and process that they need to undergo in order to master the art of writing. However, it will be hard for them also to accomplish their writing task if they don't have the attitude towards writing just like most writers do.
