The Old Testament is full of examples of God or Yahweh having personal relationships with his people. There are countless instances that he visibly or audibly provides proof that he is in control and works in the lives of those who follow after him. David, who was know as a man after God’s own heart, found himself being constantly pursued by King Saul but always rescued by God from certain death. In Psalm 18, David praises the Lord in what has now become canonized in the Bible and is known as a Psalm of Praise. The psalm opens with the powerful sentence: “I love you, O Lord, my strength,” which immediately demonstrates David‘s devotion to the Lord along with the recognition that he provides something that David does not have: strength (New …show more content…
As Michael Travers points out in Encountering God in the Psalms, “As a psalm of praise and worship, the Hymn glorifies God for who he is and what he has done” (49). David makes it clear who God is in his life: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge” (Ps. 18.2) and what he has done: “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters” (Ps. 18.16). This psalm ends by glorifying God and expounding once again on what he has done for not only David but also his decedents: “He gives his king great victories…” (Ps. 18.50). The reader knows that these victories will continue because the psalm demonstrates the never ending power of God throughout along with the promise of training those who are found righteous to fight for the Lord. In keeping with Leland Ryken’s Words of Delight’s structure of how a song of praise should be set up, I will break the Psalm into three parts. Verses 1-3 present the formal call to praise; verses 4-45 list the various acts of God that are worthy of being praise; and verses 46-50 end with a resolution that not only will the Lord continue to provide for his people but also that the people will continue to bring him praise. David is praising God for a specific act in this psalm therefore making it a declarative praise (245-246). He is recalling a time that God came through for him in a battle and trained him to
This has 6 verses, at first he questions God then he calls God out. But then he worshiped God, he thanks God. For the things he have done for him. David was feeling hopeless, so he called on God. Just like in Carrie Underwood- “ Jesus take the wheel”. The young adult called for God when she felt powerless.
1. Examine the strengths and weaknesses of the argument for the existence of God based on religious experience. (18) 2. ‘The argument merely indicates the probability of God and this is of little value to a religious believer.’ Discuss. (12)
The books that we were required to read for Bible 115 class were Engaging God’s World – A Christian Vision Of Faith, Learning And Living by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and The Call – Finding And Fulfilling The Central Purpose For Your Life by Os Guinness. Both books offered very useful advice for today’s Christians. Engaging God’s World is written for students and will help them make sense of their education in a Christian perspective. Both authors use scripture, humor and common sense to validate their points.

The relationship between David and God is one of both fear and love. David, who is chosen by God to rule the people of Israel, is loved by God. However, it is clear in points of the Bible that the wrath of God overcomes his love for David. To begin with the love that God has for David, it is easy to see when David places the Ark of God in Jerusalem, officially giving it a place to rest after several years of wandering. We see this in the dialogue when it is said “And David went and brought up the Ark of God from the house of Obededom to the City of David with rejoicing” (2 Sam. 6:12). With the Ark itself
God used the faith David who was only a mere Sheppard boy, but had such great faith in His God of impossibilities to defeat the mighty giant warrior Philistine, Goliath. In the New Testament, God develop a relationship with Paul who went from being a persecution of Christians Saul to Paul a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, who preach the gospel in His name sake and increase the growth of God’s kingdom. God has always a solid foundational relationship with His creation since the very start of time, its humanity who lacks the faith in Him to carry out a relationship with their Father in heaven.
This psalm was written by David when he was in a distressful state, being chased by Saul who
In the movie God on Trial, director Andy de Emmony has the actors in the setting of the concentration camp, Auschwitz, where they have to face the challenging and controversial issue of God’s goodness. The characters hold a trial to judge God, the room is full of tension and division where some of the prisoners defend God and the others accuse God with murder and evil. Those who come to God’s defense restate numerous biblical stories which are full of miracles and beautiful natural stories full of hope. On the other hand, the others accuse God with devastating personal experiences and horrendous biblical stories. The movie is not the only time people tried to defend or question God’s goodness. In the article, “ Did God Command Genocide?”
This psalm is a difficult psalm to break down due to differences in structure but also in it’s nature. This psalm is about the creator of the
The Book of Psalms is the Book of Prayer. Whoever wants to learn to pray let him pray to David and whoever prays with the psalms, David shall be a teacher for him, how he should pray as a father that shall hold his son's hand to teach him how to write. In the Book of Psalms we know ourselves and the weaknesses and pitfalls that are in us and we find in this travel fall and the advancement of prayers of repentance and thanksgiving and praise. Psalms are filled with many prophecies concerning the incarnation, pain and resurrection of the Lord. It is the greatest witness to the life of the Lord Jesus, so Peter said that David is a prophet (Acts 30: 2).
When discussing and proving the person of Christ, there are two basic laws that must be addressed and proven. First you must prove that Christ is one hundred percent human (humanity), then you must prove that at the same time Christ is one hundred percent God (deity).
The bible was written as an account of what many viewed that God had accomplished so his actions and words could be passed on for generations. Some believe it is a literary account and some believe it is a historical account. The word of God in the bible comes in many forms and is left up to interpretation by the reader. Some believe that the word of God should be the only word and should be strictly followed. Some believe that the words are meant as a guideline to help us through life. Whatever your belief is you can always seem to find the meaning behind your belief through the word of God in the Bible.
Through out history, as man progressed from a primitive animal to a "human being" capable of thought and reason, mankind has had to throw questions about the meaning of our own existence to ourselves. Out of those trail of thoughts appeared religion, art, and philosophy, the fundamental process of questioning about existence. Who we are, how we came to be, where we are going, what the most ideal state is....... All these questions had to be asked and if not given a definite answer, then at least given some idea as to how to begin to search for, as humans probed deeper and deeper into the riddle that we were all born into.
Verse three outlines the start of the forming of David's band of miscreants; "Also joining him was every person who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. He became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him" (NKJV). David is now the leader of an unstructured group of men discontented with the current political situation. They had been wronged and mistreated, were under a curse of debt that they could not pay. They were not trained loyal soldiers, but like David, are so distressed that they have no option left except to run and hide from their problems (Swindoll, 1997, p.74; Epp, 1965, p.56). Psalm 57 indicates that not only were they hiding, but they were angry and wanting vengeance on those they felt had wronged them. Keller (1985, pp. 120,121) suggests that it was in living with these oppressed outcasts that David developed his compassion for those living under oppression.
