Few colors on the visible spectrum inspire the degree of fixation that gold does. Whether it be a streak of glittering light shooting across the sky, a brilliant hue that can only be found on trees in autumn, or the rays of the sun as it begins to rise above the horizon, gold captivates in its natural state. In “Gold,” Billy Collins utilizes visual imagery to develop an outlook on nature that extends beyond a superficial perception to a more divine appreciation. The imagery found at the beginning of the poem does not reflect any deeper appreciation than what is explicitly stated.
