In the epic, historical movie Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell tells the story of the rise, fall and reconstruction of the old south. The movie has drama, romance, and adventure all set against the backdrop of the civil war. The movie focuses on the main character Scarlett O’Hara and her challenges and triumphs, both romantically and personally as she faces incredible hardships during and after the war. Prior to the war, Scarlett lives in an affluent family on a southern plantation. During the war her family loses everything except for their land and during the reconstruction she works hard and challenges gender roles as she regains status and power. I truly enjoyed watching this movie with my mom, as it is her favorite. I was a little hesitant at first because I thought this movie would be boring due to the fact that it is four hours long. I thought it was a perfect example of a movie that covered both the Civil War as well as Reconstruction. I also found it shocking that Scarlett was so independent as a woman during that time period. Women during that time had strict duties and had certain expectations but Scarlett tried to push the barriers. I thought this was a good movie and I felt like …show more content…
I believe that this movie was somewhat bias because it was told from a southern viewpoint. However, “an Atlanta historian, William Kurtz, was hired by David O. Selznick to ensure that the Southern architecture, manners, dress, and artillery were all historically accurate” (Odek). In this movie all of the women wore period correct costumes that reflected what was customary at that time. The architecture mimicked actual buildings that would have been seen, including the plantations houses and the details of the city shown in the Burning of Atlanta scene. Specific details were even shown on the home furnishings, light fixtures, and wallpaper staying true to that time
After watching this movie, it gave me an appreciation of where I am from and all ancestors before me. This is definitely a movie that I recommend every black person watch. The movie was well written.
To start off I felt this was a good movie overall. One scene I felt that had stood out was when the black man was showed the pattern on the cloth showing that there was a house he can escape to with his daughter. This scene kind of gave us a hint that many people probably knew about the house but was too scared to escape in fear of being caught. I felt that the black man was very determined to get his daughter away safely no matter what so much that he went in to unknown water just to hide from the slave masters. I was a little confused at the begging because I thought slave work consisted of picking cotton or some other hardship. There was a scene that stood out to me on a personal note. The scene were the black man was hanged and his daughter was watching as this occurred.
This book was definitely interesting to read and it wasn’t a bad book, but the characters were all over the place and it was really confusing trying to figure out who is who in the story because Annie had a big family and a lot of friends. I also thought that the author L.M. Elliott did a nice job blending the historical fact of the Civil war in with the book. I think that a lot of the book was accurate. It was just a little confusing with the characters, but it was a good
This movie shows all of the horrible things that are incorporated with war, in excruciating detail. At one point in the movie Scarlet has to witness a man get his leg amputated with no anesthesia, or anything for pain at all due to lack of funds, and lack of ability to get the medicines that were necessary. The accuracy of the film though is somewhat biased. The book was written by a southern woman, and frankly I’m sure had some resentment towards the North, she wrote this book glamorizing the South and making the North look horrendous. They were fighting to free slaves, whereas the South wanted to keep their slaves. The movie for the most part only seems to portray slaves with kind master and the truth of the matter is, no matter how good and kind the master was, the black people were slaves. They were considered property and as such, could be bought, sold, used and abused, and treated like cattle, not people. The slaves were not free. They had no legal rights, because they were not a person under the law. Their "owners" had complete control of their lives. They were not free to go anywhere or do anything without their master’s approval. The master had the right to separate husband and wife, parents and children. It was very rare that an entire slave family would remain intact. There was always the fear of being sold. Because of death or bankruptcy, families were separated and sold to fulfill
Scarlett O' Hara, a charming sixteen year old teenage girl living on a plantation in Georgia by the name of Tara, was always able to get exactly what she wanted. She was able to flatter most of the men in the county into submission, however over the course of the novel, Scarlett begins to change drastically due to events which include the rage of The Civil War on Tara, several relationship conflicts, and loss of family members. Scarlett O' Hara spent much of her time concerning her many suitors but gave extra consideration to a man named Ashley Wilkes. But she is distraught to find out he is to be married to his cousin Melanie and from that point on her classic southern, Georgia plantation style life was never the same. At a barbeque held by many plantation owners and residences, Scarlett first meets Rhett Butler. This man will turn out to be an important factor in Scarlett's future actions.
This movie did an excellent job portraying the time era in which the Civil War was taken place and depicts the emotions and pressures of war. The movie helped me to visual that time period in a better sense and to see the perspective of African American soldiers fighting in the Civil War. The movie showed a lot more in depth and personal feelings of the black soldiers during that time period. The movie portrayed what the black soldiers had to deal with as soldiers of the Union and it helped me to visual what I learned about the black regiments during the civil war. The film even showed the soldiers having to do manual labor and lute the southern towns and cities. It also showed how even though the black soldiers were on the same side as the white soldiers of the Union, the black soldiers were still treated as unequal and faced prejudice daily by the other white soldiers. It also showed the strong belief of many of the white Union soldiers that they fought for emancipation and the freedom of the
I seem to not enjoy historical movies as much; however, I have enjoyed this movie. Historical movies tend to be boring and do not interest me as much as other genres. There are reasons like, the situation does not relate to me, or it is too much information that would make me a passive watcher. I enjoyed Selma because, I like Martin Luther King and I heard about this movement.
I really like the movie and the story was very different than any other movies. Sherman’s way of writing the stories seems very unique and could not tell what would happen next in the movie. When Victor knew about his father’s death I was thinking he would not go to Phoenix to get his remains since he had hatred towards him but he decides to go which was surprising. It was always funny how Thomas kept telling stories about different stuffs to Victor even though he knew Victor don’t like to hear them. The author has tried to show the culture of Indians, the thoughts of people, how they dealt their life through his stories which I really found interesting and something different to learn. The author has showed how life was back then and I liked the fact he tried to show what impact it can have to a child’s mind if he sees his father drinking alcohol and tormenting his mother
The movie “Gone with the Wind” is about a rich southern girl named Scarlett O’Hara and her life hardships set during the time-period of the Civil War. In the story, Scarlett is forced to watch helplessly as her family’s wealth and lives fade as the confederacy loses the Civil War. Even though, the movie is mainly centered on the dilemmas of Scarlett’s love life, there are many historical accuracies that immerse the viewer in the southern mindset as well as the timeframe. The portrayal of class structures and the confederate attitudes before the Civil War are both accurate and engaging details that the movie successfully implements. In the film, these examples are displayed mainly through the dialogue and setting.
Overall I found the movie to be quite interesting and exciting at times but a bit slow in others. The story itself was very clear to me and didn’t cause any confusion. It had a good flow also, just as you were on the verge of falling into boredom with a scene they switched it up on you to keep you
A huge factor that was spot on accurate is the accent, clothing and the events that occurred throughout the movie. The scene where Rachel was raped by her white owner is heard many times in history that African American women were forced to sleep with them no matter what. Furthermore, the clothes that were seen throughout the movie were accurately like the clothes worn in 1880’s, by all. The accent that Mathew McConaughey used was spot on when he was giving the letter declaring there were Free states of Jones, McConaughey used the accent of of a Mississippian accurately.
The accuracy of the film was spot on. It depicted all the horrors and history of slavery very well. In fact “Dr. Emily West, an associate professor of history at the University of Reading” supports my statement when she states “I have never seen a film represent slavery so accurately.” It portrayed the difference of the masters by showing how one was kind to Northup and how the other was a “Nigger Breaker.” Also just as History says, slave owners justified their actions with the bible, and their “Christian Duties.” However, it did over emphasize Northup’s social
Stephen Marche displays his frustration with the film Gone with the Wind as best as he can in a calm but critical response. Marche, in the article had clearly shown his frustration with the events that had transpired in the film. Most notably, his frustration was towards the lack of accuracy in the portrayal of black women. The main black women actresses that the audience follows throughout the film, were not seen as equals among their white counterparts but as merely servants that would obey even during and then after the Civil War. Soon after the Civil War, slavery was abolished, in that same year, 1865.
I thought the movie was fantastic! The characters were perfect and so well played. It really showed all the great aspects of Jackie Robinson and his family. It also portrayed all of the hardships he had to go through and live with everyday. The message the movie was sending is that racial barriers have been broken, and many other barriers can be broken as well as long as you persevere. I learned all about Jackie Robinson, his family and how he became involved in Major League Baseball. I would most definitely recommend using the movie in class to support a content area. We could probably spend an entire week on the movie and race ideologies. This movie was a perfect example of the ideology, and it teaches you about it too. Overall it was a great film, and I am so glad it came out in time for this
In the light of, the director makes good points through the whole movie about what they went through. I like this movie because it gives me more information of the people who were involved or who were there during that time. Like, Ann Lee Coper (Oprah Winfrey), Martin Luther King (David Oyelowo), and the rest of the people who help fight for African Americans to be able to vote. The movie also shows the difficult and the happy time they went through. Even the problems with their family. No matter what’s going on, they were still focus and full invested in having freedom. What I learned from this movie was that they did not let all the obstacles of what they went through mess up their main goal because of that I am able to take those lesson for my
