Good Vs. Evil In Lauren Kate's Fallen

The attachment “Murder, magic, and madness at the fair that changed america” to the title hardly does the novel justice. Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City, a nonfiction novel that surrounds the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, also known as The World’s Columbian Exposition. The novel follows the lives of two real men, Daniel Burnham, the architect who builds the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who exploits the fair to find his victims. Many new inventions were introduced at the fair, such as Juicy Fruit gum, the Ferris Wheel, and many other novel ideas that impacted the lives of many people for generations. The beautiful fair Burnham creates provides the perfect distraction and lure for Holmes’ activities. In his novel The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson suggests that good and evil coexist in the world by using charged language, imagery and juxtaposition to show although people view the fair as a perfect dreamland immune to evil, it still lurks outside in the dark, influencing the rest of the world.

A theme is a unifying or dominant idea in a literary work. Steinbeck described the competition of good versus evil as the story of mankind itself. He believes that every generation to come since Adam and Eve will now be immersed with the struggle of good and evil due to Eve’s curiosity that led to sin, eventually banning both her and Adam from the Garden of Eden. In East of Eden, Steinbeck makes the contest of good versus evil apparent through his contrasting description of the setting, the characters’ opposing personalities, and society’s changing morals.

In life there is always some sort of violence and there always seems to be a good and a bad side. The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross is a movie about 24 tributes fighting to the death for the Hunger Games crown. The prize is riches, fame and freedom from ever having to physically fight in the arena again. It is a game of violence, ferocity, and blood, and only one tribute can win. Even though stories often have a Battle between Good and Evil, it is Katniss’s internal conflict confronting her own good and evil that portrays humanity with a longing for destruction, violent inclination, and sense of separation.

John Cheever was an award winning American author of the twentieth century. His work often possessed 'psychological and religious vision' with central themes of 'sin, deception, and redemption' (Kennedy, 551). Cheever's short story entitled 'The Five-Forty-Eight' portrays a struggle of good vs. evil. Following the themes of sin, deception, and redemption, we read of a young woman (good) seeking revenge for the evil done to her. Through the course of the story the reader can distinguish between the traits of good and evil.

The battle between good and evil is presented in Sleepy Hollow by showing the characters and how they are presented. Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel are considered the film’s protagonists and the Hessian Horseman and Lady Van Tassel are considered the antagonists, this clearly displays the battle between good and evil. Cathy Trask’s behavior in John Steinbeck’s East of Eden defines the monstrous ability capable of existing in the human soul. Steinbeck puts it best when he said: “And just as there are physical monsters, can there not be mental or psychic monsters born?”(72) From childhood, Cathy used her monstrous ability to get what she wanted and escape the unwanted. Even into adulthood, she used her inhuman ability to hurt the ones she loved, and the ones who loved her. Many see her true evil nature without even knowing her. Her corrupt behavior radiated from her. Although, Cathy may show some traits of humanity, her manipulation and appearance define her true evilness.

The fight between good and evil has been a topic discussed and argued time after time. It is believed we have both good and bad in us, in a quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the character Sirius Black said, “We’ve got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” Mankind has been trying to make better with their actions, stay to the light side, to be good. An example of this is the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has inspired many other stories; people use it as a comparison as well. Steinbeck starts out by describing the land surrounding Salinas Valley. In his description of Salinas Valley, he defines what is good and evil, which allows the reader to unlock the secrets or twists that are being told if one is looking for them. John Steinbeck himself said about East of Eden that Your literate and understanding man will take joy of finding the secrets hidden in this book almost as though he searched for treasure, but we must never tell anyone they are here.

In his novel The Road Cormac McCarthy uses a post-apocalyptic setting to help broaden the debate over moral good and evil. Not only do the main characters in his novel display either good or evil in their actions, but so do the people they encounter on their journey. These encounters are shaped by the moral decisions each individual makes. In this novel’s setting it is hard to define good and evil, but the choices made can still be applied to a non-apocalyptic world. McCarthy uses the experiences of the main characters to demonstrate that no matter what the scenario good will overcome evil.

Throughout many works of literature, a prominent theme has been “Good vs. Evil';. Many authors base the plot of their novels around “good guys'; fighting the “villain';.Robert Louis Stevenson contrasts good and evil through many of the characters thathe creates.
