1. Using table 11-1 as a guide, what needs to be done to turn Google’s HR group into a true team? Successful teams take on a life of their own. It is important for managers to have realistic expectations when it comes to teams. Additionally managers need to be proactive in helping to make teams effective. In order for the HR group at Google to become a true team the members of the group have to work together in cohesion. Members of the group need to realize everything becomes a shared activity. Leadership is shared; accountability is no longer for individuals, but for the team as a whole. If one person in the team fails, the whole team fails. It is no longer an individual activity. Trust is what frees employees to put their full energy and commitment to work [ (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, p. 312) ]. Trust needs to be earned. In order to build trust there are 6 guidelines that should be followed; communication, support, respect, fairness, predictability, and competence [ (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, pp. 313-314) ]. These six guidelines are important for cross functional teams because trust is an important piece of making a team work effectively. 4. Which type of cohesiveness, socio-emotional or instrumental, is more important in this type of cross functional team? Explain.
Socio-emotional cohesiveness is a sense of togetherness that develops when individuals derive emotional satisfaction from group participation [ (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, p. 314) ]. Instrumental cohesiveness is a sense of togetherness that develops when group members are mutually dependent on one another because they believe they could not achieve the group’s goals by acting separately [ (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, p. 314) ]. In the cross functional group at Google instrumental cohesiveness needs to be focused on at first, before the team can move to socio-emotional cohesiveness. The importance of instrumental cohesiveness works best for these large cross functional teams because they each have a specific skill set that when combined will make a effective and successful team. Hence the team will be cohesive because they know they are dependent on each other
