The Gotthard base tunnel is the longest rail tunnel in the world with a length of 57.09 km. It is the largest tunnel that is part of a larger project called the NRLA (New Railway Link through the Alps). The scale of this project meant there would also be an enormous price tag, which was approximately 11.34 billion euro (CHF 12.2 billion) upon completion. The scale and price of such a project meant it needed many reasons to be justifiable and beneficial to the Swiss economy. The benefits of this project are as follows: • The project has a positive impact on the environment as it aims to reduce road traffic, involving trucks that pass through Switzerland. The construction of the tunnel will shift the bulk of transport from trucks to trains. There are many benefits to reducing the amount of traffic passing through the country. Firstly, roads will not have to be expanded which means both money and resources can be used on other projects that could benefit the environment, this will also help to reduce the amount of traffic. Also, by reducing the amount of traffic, which currently consists of over 2000 trucks passing through the Gotthard road tunnel daily (one million trucks per year), emissions will be reduced, thereby protecting and preserving the delicate alpine flora and fauna.
