On Saturday, January 21st, 2017, my mother and I got up at 6:15 in the morning--sleeping in by her standards, getting up early by mine. By 7:00 AM, we were on a bus with the local chapter of the League of Women Voters on our way to a protest unlike any we had ever participated in before. Just before 10:30 AM, the bus stopped just under a mile away from the Minnesota State Capitol. We piled out of the bus, ready to perform our First Amendment-sanctioned act of protest, serving our country not as a soldier does in Afghanistan nor as a Senator does in Congress, but as ordinary citizens, frustrated with the state of our union and willing to speak up about our qualms.
