Graduation Speech: Transfer To Inactive Status Situation

I am transferring for a variety of reasons. The most important reason is that I'm not happy where I am at right now. College is talked about as a place where you'll have to work hard, but also as a place where you'll have fun and experience new things and find out who you are. Yes, I've worked hard and yes, I've explored new things, but I'm not enjoying myself like I thought, I'm not happy where I am. The school I now attend doesn't offer me the opportunities that it promised me and the ones I am seeking. It is small and lacks ... Transferring is the best decision for me because I know that where I stand now I am not fulfilling my potential and I know that there is more out there for me to accomplish. after retirement. That came from a combination of my consulting, a lump sum payment when Sarah retired, and interest / capital appreciation of our investments. Since retirement, we have not been saving any of our retirement income and in fact are depleting our savings paying IRA taxes. We probably can still keep the goal level even while contributing $6,000 a year to our kids requirement IRA because the principle is large enough that the interest income continues to mitigate the expenditures. Jacobus College Fund account distributions and kids IRA gifts will likely hold future growth consistent with the plan. My dream would be that our children would continue this approach, giving each succeeding generation a better net worth that they can pass on.

It may sound cliché, but I was born to teach students with disabilities. Growing up, I had the best example to follow. My mother actively taught special education for 31 years and seeing her interaction with students created a passion in me to do the same thing. Even at a young age, it was evident that I wanted to be a teacher: from forcing my younger brother to sit still and play “school” with me, to spending my free time volunteering in special needs classrooms during middle and high school.

It was the end of second grade when we moved into my parent’s home, although whenever I return it still feels like walking in after a long day of Mr. Minchak’s class. The stain on the TV room carpet still smells of orange juice, but the house and I are the only ones that know about its’ existence, like it’s our little secret. The house whispers memories of emotional detachment, it never raises its’ voice. Twelve years later, past thoughts are still there, but the feeling of home has never existed in that space; my parent’s home was never my home to be begin with.

No college student heads to college planning to be on academic probation and possibly dismissal. But reality, it can happen to anyone. It happened to my classmates and I and I know each and every one of them did not want to receive that email. Academic probation is a warning that students get when their performance falls below the college or university’s requirement for good academic standing. When I received my email, I was shocked and did not know what I was going to do next. I have never had a GPA that low before and I was mentally and physically shocked to read that email on my computer screen. There are several reasons why I am on academic probation, and several things I am going to do to get off of academic probation.
