Over the years rapid technological innovations have completely altered the way we communicate with others. The internet is one of these innovations that have revolutionized communication with others. It has made it possible to communicate with people throughout the world with little effort. The internet led to social networks, which is one of the largest means of connecting and interacting with others. Cell phones have made it possible to communicate with people wherever we may be. This shows that more people are accepting online dating as a valid alternative to dating offline. Smith and Duggan also report that “5% of Americans who are currently married or in a long-term partnership met their partner somewhere online, and among those who have been together for ten years or less, 11% met online”. This provides evidence that relationships that start on the internet can be as serious as those made offline. Social networks are new platforms that people use to communicate to each other. These social networking sites have had a large jump on membership over the years. In 2005 the amount of internet users that used social networks sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram was roughly 8% compared to 73% in 2013 according to the Pew Internet Project. This jump was mainly because people were using social networking to keep contact with people from their past as well as speaking with new people. Social networks continue growing because of the variety of ways they allow people to express themselves. Instagram, which was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010, allows people to post pictures of themselves for others to see, while Twitter, founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass, lets people send short messages in 140 or less characters.
