Drug Uses Media Analysis When Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, it was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. The reason for this is easy to understand: players love the heists, murders, and drug activity the GTA franchise has become known for; and Grand Theft Auto V is no exception to this rule. Rockstar, the game developer of the series, have increased drug’s role within the game. This is the first time we have seen some drugs be directly incorporated into the plot. Among many others, marijuana is one of the more common used drugs in the game. Two of the main protagonists, Michael and Franklin, can openly smoke marijuana at their homes. In addition to this, buying out a beachside medical marijuana shop is a positive move …show more content…
After Franklin lights his bong, the screen immediately becomes slightly blurred. You no longer have control over Franklin, and he will start to talk to himself slowly. While Rockstar developed a few different scripts for what Franklin says when he is high, it is usually along the lines of him noting how relaxed he feels. You regain control usually around an hour after in GTA time, or about two minutes in real time. Smoking marijuana in real life can usually result in a two-hour high, though many factors can affect that number. GTA is not realistic in this sense; one can expect Rockstar wanted to make it a quick high to give the player more time to explore other areas of the game. While blurred vision is not a symptom of being high, slowed reaction time and dizziness are, which would explain Franklin’s slow movements and uncontrolled motor skills while driving. For example, our textbook shows that slowing of cognitive performance is a symptom of marijuana usage, even in regular users (Ksir and Hart, 2015, p.359). While Grand Theft Auto may stretch the effects of marijuana usage to benefit the player, it also includes many symptoms found in the real world. Grand Theft Auto is set in the city of Los Santos, a fictional version of Los Angeles. California is generally a progressive state when it comes to marijuana, and this is carried over into the game. With the
In America there are a lot of problems, ranging from violence to obesity. A growing concern of many Americans is the drug “epidemic” with the growth of the war on drugs. Marijuana, throughout history, has been demonized and illegalized, however now a newfound acceptance of the drug is growing rapidly with some states fully legalizing the drug recreationally, and others medically.
Because marijuana is illegal in the United States and decades of government sponsored anti-marijuana programs, it’s often associated with crime though there is no association between weed use and crime. Although there are studies that link marijuana and crime, its almost all focused on illegal distribution. People who are high don’t commit violence. Its common knowledge that a person should never take alcohol or weed and drive, but although its true that marijuana affects the ability to drive, it is not as dangerous as drunk or buzz driving. A recent study show that marijuana use increases the odds of a fatal crash by 83 percent while driving with a blood alcohol level of at least .05 increased the chance of being in a crash by 575 percent. It is clear that the roads are threatened more by alcohol than weed but society is also affected by both in very different ways. Colorado is a state where weed is legal to those twenty one and older and offers a look on marijuana’s effects on society such as states with medical marijuana painkiller overdoses deaths have dropped 25 percent due to people substituting their prescriptions for weed (Christensen, Wilson "Is Marijuana as Safe as -- or Safer than -- Alcohol?”). Alcohol does not lower the number of painkiller but because
Drug policy is a crucial topic in the country today. Substance abuse, as well as drug-related crime rates, are a huge problem. This is a fact. The way to fix the problem of substance abuse, however, is widely disagreed upon. Some think that stricter laws regarding drug possession and use would solve the problem, while others believe that loosening the restrictions would be a better option. The issue of legalizing drugs, especially marijuana, is one that is debated all the time. In fact, in 1995, a survey was conducted on the most important policy issues and eighty five percent of the country placed drugs at the top of the list (Falco 1996). Many states are actually beginning to decriminalize, and even
Flyers and posters were placed everywhere reading “Marijuana a puff- a party- a tragedy! Assassin of Youth(marijuana).” All sharing one common goal: convincing the public of the abominable drug that marijuana was being presumed to be. Then came the grand slam, the Reefer Madness film. The film’s main focus was how badly the teenage marijuana users were affected by the drug. These adolescents became unexplainably violent and deranged. The film even showed an extremely irrational behaviors, like suicide, because of how “potent” the high was. The movie was successfully advertised and pushed to be seen. Quickly after, this falsified idea of marijuana spread across the US like wildfire and its information was absorbed. Generation after generation carried on these false interpretations on cannabis. All medical miracles and its obvious economical benefits were lost due to blind ignorance and lack of knowledge.
The question of legalizing marijuana has been an issue for many years. In the Unites States from the 1600s to late 1800s hemp was harvested on U.S. soil to create materials such as rope, paper and clothing. It was during the 1800s that cannabis products became popular for medical use and was sold in many pharmacies across the nation. It became a requirement to label these over-the-counter medicines containing cannabis but it was still legal. Around the early 1900s the many Mexicans immigrated to U.S. to escape the Mexican Revolution conflict. These immigrants smoked marijuana recreationally and brought this concept with them. El Paso, Texas became the first U.S. city to ban marijuana in 1915 (Benson, 2015) By 1937, 46 of the 48 states has passed laws banning marijuana use and the Marijuana Tax Act was passed making it illegal to have marijuana unless it was for medical reasons. In 1952 the Narcotics Control Act of 1956 was imposed and the federal government started requiring minimum prison sentences for possessing marijuana. Marijuana was made a schedule I drug meaning it had no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse in the Controlled Substance Act of 1970.
Despite the fact of the potential market boom and it benefiting other sectors, prohibitionist groups urge that cannabis is a threat to society and its youth. An organization known as “Save Our Society from Drugs (S.O.S)” claims that the use of medical marijuana is a scam is by special interest groups used to exploit the sick and dying. According to Save Our Society from Drugs, crude cannabis does not have any medical properties
There are three possible theories between gang involvement and drug use: the effects of a drug can cause an individual to activate violent behavior, the cost of a drug can cause an individual to commit robbery in order to continue drug use, and continuous distribution of the drug on the market (Howell and Decker,1999). These theories were tested and relationships two and three came out to be conclusively correct. Drugs are defined as: any substance other than food that can be inhaled, injected, smoked, consumed, absorbed via a patch on the body or under the tongue that causes a physiological change in the body (Drug, n.d). The U.S Government surveyed 118 Americans, above the age of 12, who admitted to using illicit drugs. The government also
In today’s society you hear about marijuana all the time, from the morning news to the newspapers you read during the day. Everywhere you look there is something about marijuana, someone being arrested with it, or stories about how it should be legal. Marijuana is a big part of today world where you want it to or not, it is everywhere.
In this case, marijuana has a connection with crimes on streets. however, many people have been killed just about selling drugs like marijuana. There are many drug dealers on the streets, so each of them has territory that nobody can come to sell drug in his area. Moreover, users do whatever they can just to get some money to buy some marijuana. For example, many users steal money from other people or rob stores; however, they may kill people just for money. Even though marijuana users get arrest about marijuana over and over, they never stop using it.
If you’ve decided to pursue medical marijuana as a health care option, the next decision to make is where you’re going to get your healthcare from. There’s more to medical marijuana than just purchasing it. You want more than a dispensary. You want a total health clinic that gives you expert medical advice from doctors who understand medical marijuana treatment and the best strains to use for your medical condition. On top of that you want a clinic that’s interested in your total health so medical marijuana isn’t just used as a Band-Aid solution. There are three medical marijuana clinics in the GTA you can look into:
Furthermore, legalization of marijuana for recreational use reduces an important revenue stream for many organized crimes. Each year, the prevalent consumption of the marijuana turns thousands of regular citizens into criminals. Similar to liquor during the Prohibition Era in the 1920s, marijuana is an easy income for organized crimes, generating billions of dollars to cannabis cultivators, who commit variety of crimes both at home and abroad. The prohibition of marijuana, just like the prohibition of liquor, is what produces the enormous profit for the criminal organizations that provide access to the substance for millions. And similar to how the influence of organized crimes, during the Prohibition, were reduced and eventually vanished,
In recent years across the United States and in many other nations as well, drug policy and the rationale behind these policies have started to undergo a tremendous shift. This change in public policy is visible to most through the ongoing legislation across America regarding the legalization of medical marijuana in 23 states, and recreational cannabis use becoming legal in 4 states as well (Hanson, 2015). This shift in public policy marks a significant turning point in the view of drugs and drug culture in the United States and reflects increased public knowledge of the less than desirable affects of the “drug war” mentality.
“If marijuana was legal, back-yard marijuana gardens would be in every neighborhood, thus kids would be able to get it as easy as taking fruit off a neighbor’s tree” (Johnathan Greens). According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 62.2 percent of the 14.2 billion people who used marijuana for the first time in one day were under the age of 18 years back in 2003. This increases by nearly 1.3 percent every year. This has become a problem due to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the active ingredient in marijuana that can become dangerous if one should take advantage of its' use by either smoking it or abusing it in its capsule/tablet form (Barr). Marijuana has been legalized for medical purposes for over 10 states in the United
Marijuana managing is an issue that we have been looking for a long time. Indeed, even though there are a great deal of sorts of medications, marijuana is a standout amongst the most widely recognized. This complicated issue has one imperative arrangement: the sanctioning. Marijuana is a major issue that shockingly makes numerous unfortunate propensities and that could likewise influence the general population to slaughter each other. Be that as it may, the issue here isn't the utilization of medications, the genuine issue is the thing that the street pharmacists can do with a specific end goal to fare or import a few medications. “It also examines policy implications and potential solutions of the controversy. Findings Comparatively inexpensive
The game that I chose was Grand Theft Auto 3. I actually watched my brother play this when I was in grade school and I have played this game before. Initially, I did not have any issues with Grand Theft Auto, but I can see where the game may be an issue for others. I would not suggest that anyone allow their kids to play it although I did and it did not cause me any problems. The game is overly violent and there is a lot of unnecessary foul language. I believe that the game does warrant its criticism because it is a little much. I remember when I watched the game, I only liked it because you could drive, change the radio station, and such. It just seemed so real, the violence part did not bother me none because I knew it was only a game. It did not make me want to use guns or anything, I just knew the difference between what goes on in reality versus any other video game. My mother did not want me to watch any of the Grand Theft Auto games, but my brother would let me and my sister watch and it did not do anything. I told my mom years later and she was fine with it, but I believe that she knew anyway, she is a very smart woman and nothing goes past her. I think with her that she did not worry about it, because she knew that she raised “old souls”. We were always mature for our age and did not have any issues with distinguishing one thing from another. When I have children, they will not be permitted to play violent games either,
