In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, the author, John Steinbeck, explores the themes of family, betrayal, and social class struggles. Readers see the historical significance of the Dust Bowl and witness the effects on a fictional family named the Joads. Dust storms of the 1930s force travel upon people of the American prairie as agriculture, ecology, and economy enter a period of pure havoc. The characters evolve extensively throughout the plot due to the historically challenging migration, which the progressing tones of confidence, dejection, and hope exemplify. Another portrayal of confidence is that which manifests in the character Ma Joad. Not only in the beginning of the book, but all throughout, Ma remains resilient with both strength and hope. Ma Joad dreamingly describes her wish for a white house in green, abundant California. She is confident this is attainable. Nevertheless, even when realizations hit that such is not the case, she continues to be a source of confidence for the family to rely on in the midst of their obstacles. To prove this point, the author describes her working in the home prior to the migration, establishing right away the importance of Ma Joad’s presence in the family dynamic. The novel states, “From her position as healer, her hands had grown sure and cool and quiet; from her position as arbiter she had become as remote and faultless in judgment as a goddess” (Steinbeck 74). This quote foreshadows how her strength allows her to become the backbone of the family in times of need. She heals the desperation in the family and possesses more influence than what Pa has at times. Readers notice roles switch, signifying how the Dust Bowl contributed to social change.
