Grave Mercy, by Robin LaFevers, is about a young girl Ismae in the Middle Ages of Brittany who was in an unfortunate arranged marriage, but since she was sired by the god of Death St. Mortain, it affects her living situation. Ismae gets rescued by a town herbwitch, and gets sent to the convent of St. Mortain where the sisters teach her skills on killing, becoming an assassin, handmaiden, to Death. She is put on a task with the brother of the Duchess of Brittany to determine who is betraying her and all of Brittany.
