Themes of hope, success, and wealth overpower The Great Gatsby, leaving the reader with a new way to look at the roaring twenties, showing that not everything was good in this era. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.

The excerpt from the text, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, begins by providing great detail through use of adjectives. The opening paragraph has an almost dream-like quality, using phrases and words such as "summer nights" "music" "champagne and the stars". These descriptions provide a great idea as to how the neighbour lives (he is quite clearly an animated merrymaker) who throws a multitude of parties. The narrator in this text is first person, giving the reader the effect of almost being within the story. We travel through the house with the omnipresent narrator, seeing the frivolous food laden tables and a whole orchestra set to entertain the guests for the entire evening. The use of this omnipresence forces the reader to truly imagine the setting, with ornate decorations and an abundance if splendour. The audience gets a view of the lavish lifestyle of the neighbour, while also getting a peek at what it is like to be on the outside looking in, a theme we discover in the first paragraph.

Thesis: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the American society in the early twentieth century consumed by lust and avarice. In order to better understand the rational and motives behind the actions of individual characters, the use of literary lenses offer a closer insight behind each character's desires. Through the psychoanalytical perspective and the use of Freudian psychology, the behaviors of these characters can be explained by identifying the id, ego, and superego. Similarly, through the Marxist perspective, economic exploitation by the wealthy can also be incorporated in analyzing the character's actions.

This assignment, I was instructed to choose an American film within the past five years and write a film review about it. One thing I love about America, are its astonishing and inspiring films and story’s. Specifically, my favorite is The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann released May first 2013. This film takes place in New York, 1922. Nick Carraway a bond-seller is depressed and suffers from alcoholism, his doctor pursues him to write an account of what put him in this state. Roughly seven years in the past, Carraway comes to New York in search of the American Dream and ends up living next door to the millionaire Jay Gatsby and across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan. After being invited to Gatsby’s amazing and mind blowing party’s he accepts Gatsby’s influence of becoming wealthy and successful. Moments later, Gatsby asks Carraway to invite his cousin Daisy over for tea with Gatsby. What Carraway does not know is that Daisy was one of Gatsby’s true love before he left for war. Throughout the story, Carraway learns more and more about the mysterious Mr. Gatsby. Throughout the story, tragedy’s, lies and love interferes with every character.

This novel has themes in it that we deal with in our everyday life. It has themes that deal with our personal lives and themes that deal with what’s right and what’s wrong. There are also themes that have to do with materialistic items that we deal desire on a daily basis. Fitzgerald focuses on the themes of corrupted love, immorality, and the American Dream in order to tell a story that is entertaining to his readers.

How came people did not respect Fitzgerald’s writing in the twentieth century, but why people are respecting and valuing Fitzgerald work in the twenty-first century? Fitzgerald had a hard time to profiting from his writing, but he was not successful after his first novel. There are three major point of this essay are: the background history of Fitzgerald life, the comparisons between Fitzgerald and the Gatsby from his number one book in America The Great Gatsby, and the Fitzgerald got influences of behind the writing and being a writer. From childhood to adulthood, Fitzgerald faced many good and bad experiences that inspired him to achieve his own American dream in a short amount of time.
