Greece: Algebra And Euclidean Geometry

Decent Essays

Greece is a superior civilization to Rome, in part because Greece contributed more ideas and teachings to contemporary society than Rome, especially in the fields of mathematics, science, government, and economics; these ancient ideas can be found easily in the socially and technologically advanced world in which we live today. Ancient Greeks contributed many ideas and methods for calculating mathematical equations, both in Geometry and in Algebra. In the centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ, a man named Euclid made great strides in Geometry, proving what we now know as Euclidean Geometry. This field of Geometry deals solely with flat space, also referred to today as two-dimensional space and the geometrical theorems and proofs associated with such. Euclidean Geometry is now the foundation of most 21st century Geometry curricula. In addition, Greek mathematician Pythagoras created and proved the Pythagorean Theorem, which contributes to both Algebra and Geometry as we now know it. The Pythagorean Theorem states that the two leg …show more content…

For instance, Plato theorized that the Earth was at the center of the universe, and the other celestial objects, in order of the distance he believed them to be from earth, were the planets, the moon, the sun, the other planets, and all other stars. Though this model was complicated and had some flaws, it was accepted as the actual model of the universe until Galileo. Herophilus, believed to be the father of anatomy, created much controversy with his autopsies to determine the cause of death for those whose deaths were largely unexplainable. The real controversy surrounding his practices came with his vivisections, or dissections of living human beings. However, Herophilus made numerous factual discoveries in most of our body’s
