Similarities and Differences in Religion
There are many similarities between Greek and Roman mythology, and several differences. The Greeks built a great civilization and many temples to the Gods. They furthered the areas of poetry, art, philosophy, astronomy, architecture, and religion. When the Romans conquered Greece they adopted many aspects of their civilization, including their religion and myths. The Greeks built the foundation and the Romans made the myths their own. Their scholars and poets studied the works of the Greeks and preserved the myths for us to enjoy today. Gaea, by herself produced the sky, Ouranos, the sea, and mountains. Gaea and her mate Ouranos created the Titans, Cyclops, and a race of vicious giants known for a hundred hands. Ouranos was discontent with the existence of the hundred handed giants, and he forced them back into Gaea. Gaea was understandably upset with this action and requested assistance from her children, the Titans. The Titan Koronos was responsible for castrating his father Ouranos. Out of the blood and sea foam from the discarded penis Aphrodite was born. Amongst the Titans Koronos and Rhea many children were born; Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. Koronos remembered that their children would be powerful enough to overthrow their father and cannibalized each of them as they were born. The crafty Rhea plotted with Gaea to devise a way to save Zeus, and they were successful in preventing him from being eaten. Zeus went on to overthrow and imprison the Titans in Tartarus, a jail like area beneath the underworld. Zeus then claimed his position as the king of the Gods, and “spiritual father of gods and men” (Funk and Wagnalls 1). In the
