The socio-political and economic situation of the time span from Momoyama period to Edo period has contributed greatly in shaping the culture of pre-modern Japan. The merchant class at the bottom of the social hierarchy became the ultimate benefactors of the rapid economic growth of the urban centers such as Edo, Kyoto, and Ȏsaka. The wealth and the hedonistic lifestyle of the merchant class (Chȏnin ) separated them from the traditional society and confined the traditional social order to a titular existence. These changes in the social context have dramatically affected the standards of taste and aesthetics, thus creating a whole new culture based on the Kabuki theatre and the pleasure districts of urban centers.
