Greek Influence On Modern Society

All around us are the remnants of people that came before. Pieces of themselves left behind through bedtime stories, breakthrough science, and breathtaking art. You see and experience their memory every day. Everyone has left their mark in history but some people and some cultures can be felt in almost all aspects of life. One of these legacies belongs to Ancient Greece. Through establishing many of the sciences we use now, creating architecture that has influenced some of the most well-known buildings in the world, and by conceiving what we know today as the foundation of our country the Greeks have a larger impression on society than any other culture in history.

Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.

Historians have long considered Ancient Greece to be one of the most influential societies on modern day life. Ancient Greece has inspired the modern world in five main areas: theatre, government, philosophy, art, and architecture.

From Doric columns to the Pythagorean Theorem, the Greeks have left a lasting impact on the contemporary world. Their architectural skill and design, proceeding from 800 BC to 27 BC, has pervaded through the centuries. Their ideas in math and science have influenced the development of the modern studies and left concepts still used today. Athens bore the concept of democracy, a concept innate to government for most Americans. Ancient Greece’s lasting contributions in architecture, math and science, and government have fueled the growth made throughout the centuries and made it the most influential ancient civilization on modern society.

The Ancient Greece culture had a large impact on Western Civilization. The Greece culture contributed to the ideas of, politics, plays, Olympics and many other things. There are many Greek philosophers, mathematicians and poets that we still identify with today Aristotle, Plato and Pontius just to name a few. Homer is the poet behind The Odyssey which continues to be used throughout many generations in the west I had to read it in high school English class. Hippocrates wrote the Hippocrates Oath an ethical oath for physicians which is also still used today. Greeks created the idea of political freedom. Much can be said about the Greeks and their contribution to Western Civilization greatly and how they paved the way. The Greeks subsidized Western Civilization greatly, contributing areas of architecture, government, and many more. The Greeks built the Parthenon, a temple dedicated the infamous goddess Athena, who they viewed as there patron. The famous temple has columns and groundwork that characterizes Greek architecture. The architects were concerned with conducting a sense of perfect balance to reflect cooperation and order in the universe. They were the first to think of the idea of democracy, a system in which people govern themselves rather than being ruled by a king; they also valued beauty and imagination.

Ancient Greece has contributed many ideas to help shape western civilization. Through their social ideas, Ancient Greece created established social classes which formed the foundation for social classes that are still used today. Politically, Ancient Greece contributed democracy and the idea of shared power. Through their culture, Ancient Greece shared their architectural ideas, which are still seen in many buildings today. All of these ideas have been passed down through generation and are still seen today. Socially, politically, and through their culture, Ancient Greece has helped lay the foundation for the development of Western Civilization

The Greek civilization contributed greatly to the development of modern Western culture. Three of the most important contribution that are the foundations of our society are Language, Philosophy, and Government.

There were other empires that were bigger than those of Greece, such as Rome and the British Empire, but none of these cultures produced more great thinkers, philosophers, and artists than Greece.

Ancient Greece is one is one of the most important civilizations in history. Why? Simply because they were the base of many things that we believe in, practice, or build upon today. Some examples are language, architecture, art, science, and much more. Over hundreds and thousands of years technology, agricultural techniques, weapons, and education has advanced and evolved. Many of these ideas not only started within Ancient Greece, but within other ancient civilizations as well. Have you ever wondered what life would have been like if the ideas and inventions that Ancient civilizations had uncovered had not been shared with other societies?

While both Roman and Greek cultures greatly influenced Western Civilization, Greeks contributed more to the western world than the Romans. The Greeks used their own ideas and thought of new ways to add to their culture, while the Romans mostly mixed and matched ideas from other civilizations and cultures to make their own. The Romans took up the inheritance of the Greeks adapted it to their own language and national traditions. Cultural diffusion helped spread Greek culture all over the world, and its effects can still be felt today in almost every aspect. Greek culture has greatly affected different parts of my daily life including architecture, food, government, inventions, music, religion, and education.

The Ancient Greeks brought us achievements that shape our world that were made not by figures lost in time, but by men and women whose voices we can still hear. Science, art, literature, political science and historiography were formulated as we now know and work with them by the ancient Greeks. As Americans, we have learned and took on many ideas from the Greeks. Greeks were one of the most advanced cultures in ancient history.
